There are some good books out there that talk about how the aesthetic features of disco are inherently resistant to hetro-normative ideals. But basically its the idea that a bunch of overgrown leather jacket wearing honkeys were cheesed that their girls wanted to go dancing (which they hated and was for gays) and not spend the rest of their lives standing upright nodding their head to rock music. It emasculated them and became a symbol for integration and the erosion of honkey life.
