Personally as an employee for a localization company I feel it is not in our best interests to actually translate Japanese text because it dilutes the purity of the experience and is basically censorship.

i think having a guy who can play devil's advocate is important when you're dealing with stuff that's as touch-and-go and subjective as localization, but, there's playing devil's advocate and then there's 'lol kkk'

A good localization should have people arguing from both directions on everything. If anything having too many people with the exact same mindset is harmful because you get echo-chambery about what is/isn't good and you can't do that with a mass media product.

I think the worst/most funny part of the post is how "lol KKK" was apparently met with "wtf is wrong with you" from his colleagues, so it's entirely possible that everyone thinks Tom is crazy and bad but consider him important enough of an asset to keep. Like, if he's contributed a lot to their current localization dialogue decisions, then he's definitely important, but dying on the hill of "underage girls are fine, as are politically charged acronyms" is so bafflingly dumb that I can't help wondering what he does that makes him worth keeping.

Asking the question "should we change this or leave this the same" and debating it is definitely important. Posting that thing about lol kkk in a public forum is maybe not a great idea. At the very best, I guess it's getting ahead of the argument they might see from particularly unsavory fans.

i can see how this COULD be a complicated topic - if they'd demanded the sign be changed and if it was actually important to the plot in some way, for instance. like hypothetically if KKK was an important acronym in the game's lore, and XSeed had kicked up a big fuss against a relatively small JP company that might not have the resources to change a lot of things on such short notice. That'd be an issue with some nuance. Instead he kicked up a fuss over basically nothing without getting the full story, and now noted youtube channel censored gaming is going to do a big video about how SJWs are ruining the work of japanese auteurs and ugh.

If it wasn't for localization and dubbing we would have never gotten Yuri Lowenthal's perfect uttering of "What the gently caress" in the True Demon Ending of noted Good Game Catherine so all localizations and dubs are justified.

Localization isn't always perfect but it's better than listening to shut ins complain about how the integrity of a work has been ruined because a translator had to change one letter of a characters name also its better than leaving in a reference to the KKK cause you thought it was funny Martian Buddy fucked around with this message at 23:51 on Apr 26, 2017 |
