It's a little of both.

It's normally between day 80 to 100 but it can move around depending on how badly you're breaking the curve (or how badly it's breaking you). I've had it pop as early as Day 72 in a game where I was heavily abusing trade routes.

I'm a little unclear on how the retreat mechanic works. I attacked the Black Monolith, managed to kill a measly 3 undead before I got overwhelmed, then retreated. When I came back for round two, there were the same number of skeletons milling around. Based on reading the thread, I thought retreating essentially "saved" your progress on a given site, so that there should've been 44 skeletons faffing about instead of 47. Is that not the case?

I definitely alt f4, but to save time. Unfavourable terrain where the enemy is coming at me from higher ground with a ton of archers? None of my dudes are going to take damage retreating and retreating will take like 5 minutes, way quicker to alt-f4. I wouldn't do it if things like that didn't take so goddamn long.

Yeah, 20 goblins on a hill and things like that are my number one cause of savescumming.
For how important picking your battles is, retreating the proper way is just too tedious.

Retreating should simply be "are any of my dudes in range of the enemy?" and if the enemy can shoot at/close to melee with one of your guys, he gets to leave with an injury, if not, then he's scott free. I guess just randomly pick one or two men for each enemy archer in range to be injured, so one archer being in range doesn't injure everybody, but yeah. I get that there should be some penalty for retreating in the middle of a losing battle or something, but if I get a look at the enemy's exact forces or the terrain and immediately go "nope!" I shouldn't have to spend 4 or 5 turns to safely get everybody out when its a foregone conclusion.

Yeah the retreat button kind of sucks right now. I only ever had it kill a guy when I retreated with him facing three legionaries and already in bad shape, but it seems to give every single one of your guys a wound every time you use it

Just keep doing contracts related to it and killing greenskin bands as you run into them. There isn't a 'final boss' of any kind.

Before the game left EA if you retreated you would literally lose a random assortment of brothers every time. It went as high as 4 dudes lost.

Does anyone use crossbows for good ranged bros (>70 ranged stat)? What about throwing weapons? On one hand, it feels like those weapons should be rolled into a single ranged weapon mastery, the way hammer/sword/axe mastery covers the 1H and 2H versions of those weapons. On the other hand, ranged bros tend to have less mandatory perks.

I know I didn't use a single thrown weapon until the Skeleton crisis appeared.

I went back to my bro data and had a look at the trait counts right now. Not the individual traits and how rare they are just yet, just how likely it is for a bro to have no, one or two traits.

And that's all this shows. Slightly less than 20% chance for no traits, and around 40% each for one or two. If I had to guess I'd say that for each trait slot there's a 60-67% chance that it will be "filled", which would lead to a distribution like this, but whatever.

This may or may not be consistent across all backgrounds:

Dotted lines represent the break points from the first plot above. Some backgrounds deviate a fair amount, but I should say that the backgrounds I have a lot of bros of (like Daytalers or Militia) seem close enough to the aggregate data, and when you've only got 10-15 like in most cases it's entirely expected that a few of them will be different from the average by pure chance. As it is I don't think I have enough bros of most backgrounds to say whether or not backgrounds influence trait counts in any way. But it is possible.

I know I didn't use a single thrown weapon until the Skeleton crisis appeared.
I built a crossbow Hunter simply because the Spiked Impaler you can loot from Goblin Overseers is fun and eventually, if I play for 500 hours, I'll kill an enemy by knocking him off a cliff with it.
Apart from that, though, bows just seem to work better with almost all the non-mastery offensive perks, so I think they're better overall. They are more fatigue-intensive, though.
And a crossbow archer with Crippling Strikes can put pretty devastating injuries even on heavily armored guys. Mine enjoys shooting his scale-armored friends in the back and giving them -25% to their defenses, for instance, but theoretically it could also help against Orcs.

Throwing weapons just seem pointless to me. They really suffer from not having tiered versions. They might help against Ancient Dead, but against those I'll happily let my archers reduce armor on the way in and then switch to long axes.

Pornographic Memory
Dec 17, 2008
I guess thrown weapons have a niche if you like to spearwall, since you only need every other bro to have a spear so the rest of your brothers are sitting idle until the enemy breaks through the spearwall or your fatigue gives out. I don't bother with throwing weapons regardless because the weapon changing micro is annoying though.

As for bows vs crossbows I like a mix for my ranged guys - if you're struggling to pick good perks for your ranged bros you might as well get both crossbow and bow mastery since crossbows and regular bows don't really need different perks. Crossbows with mastery and crippling strikes are excellent damage dealers against armored enemies, but regular bows are better for soft targets and the extra range makes them really good for countering enemy ranged, plus the possibility for two shots a turn lets you stack more Overwhelm.

Maybe lashing weapons vs undead. But javelins, why

Required by his programming!
i look at reservists as less 'these people can fit in perfectly' and more 'these guys are probably better than whatever dunderhead i can pick up in the next town'. a level 5 or 6 cripple will still tend to be better than a level 1 close to anything short of hedge knight, so for reservists my plan is to churn the cheapest jobs out there, find someone with passable fatigue and melee skill, and something that always lets them be content in reserve. cripples are a gimme, finding a daytaler or something with disloyal is also helpful.

I figured out something that appears kindof interesting.

The first time you boot up the game and generate a seed, it will always generate the same Bros in each town. It changes if you quit and reroll the seed, but if you reboot again, same town bros.

The interesting thing is that this is constant *across seeds*. Which towns the bros show up in changes, but (for example) I've seen Burkhard Whoreson in multiple towns now in multiple seeds, and he always has two stars in melee def and two in melee offense, plus the Drunk trait (that bastard is amazing).

Just anecdotal but it seems like the bros available in any given town change over time and/or their stats change as well, though not completely. A certain dude I keep seeing pop up has the same traits, "club footed" and "fat" which is tragic considering his stats would be awesome otherwise- but his stats do seem to change somewhat. Any other opinions on that?

It makes me wonder if eventually everyone has a chance of stumbling upon the same recruits as everyone else, or if it's based off something in your computer. Like, is everyone else going to eventually have Arnold the Giant hedge knight with Brute show up in their game like he did in mine?

On 507bdd he's in a village to the left of the starting village, like one or two over. In 270166 he's in a northern town on the right side of the map. First few days only. At least, on my computer it's reproducible. Only first time you generate the seed after booting though. After that it changes.

Damwald? Can't find him there. I do always get the same recruits, though.

So what I guess this means is: the game generates recruits using I don't know what seed initially, but it's stable (so, not date or something like that) and probably specific to system/user/game copy in some way. But once you generate a map the game starts using the map's seed for everything until you start a new campaign/change the seed. This doesn't affect the initial recruits available because they're created before the seed is changed.

Bottom line is we all might have our one perfect bro waiting just for us.

e: Never mind, he's in the fort right above. Still probably the same principle. Just always the same initial seed for everyone and no personal bros, unfortunately.
