Being in the industry, I always look at real estate crowdfunding funny. There are cases where it can help projects with insufficient visibility, but you also get adverse selection where projects go there to avoid having sophisticated investors/it was turned down by sophisticated investors. At the same time, it's an opaque industry, so there is definitely something to be said for a more efficient marketplace.

I stopped using Mint because it kept asking me if I was saving too much with messages like, "Are you sure you want to deduct 12.5k from each paycheck to your brokerage account?" and I just scream "Of course! That is less than 10% of my net! Mint, you idiot!" What an idiot. I get paid weekly too, so that throws off Mint as well. Why even bother at that point?

Twerk from Home posted:Somebody's going to blow right past the 401k annual contribution limit and get bothered by the IRS. BWM. Part of that is employer match. Also I contributed way less the first few months of the year for reasons, which is definitely BWM quote:I stopped using Mint because it kept asking me if I was saving too much with messages like, "Are you sure you want to deduct 12.5k from each paycheck to your brokerage account?" and I just scream "Of course! That is less than 10% of my net! Mint, you idiot!" I don't really see the analogy here, it seems to me if the recommendations were actually recommendations at all, you wouldn't ask someone who contributes to their 401k every paycheck whether they've stopped contributing to their 401k. It's not even targeted marketing, it's just plain spam. I understand the point that if you go into a grocery store and buy products based upon psychology, rather than price, then you can potentially end up with a completely different set of products. Are you saying that if you recognize the psychology of consumerism, then you already won the battle?

I stopped (well, never really started) using Mint because it's technically a violation of my agreement with my bank and if my account got hacked they could theoretically use it as an excuse to not cover my losses. Not that I want my bank credentials out of my control in any way anyway.

ate all the Oreos posted:Yeah I looked that up a while ago and I can't find any record of any bank actually using that against someone but it's kinda worrying regardless That isn't strictly true. If you give a card and pin to someone else and they misuse it, then yes you are liable, likewise if you give your online banking password to someone who misuses it, you ahould be liable for that as well. You don't see people getting an unrelated claim denied because thier spouse logged onto their online banking once. Using mint is a grey area because you are potentially leaving your credentials unsecure and exposed and the bank has no control over that.

If Canadian banks would let me provide a read only access of my financial data to verified third parties that could be revoked anytime I would consider something like Mint again. For now I'll stick to doing things with ynab (old version, because new version is basically Mint but you pay for it).quote:“By requiring bank customers to divulge their confidential access codes and passwords, Mint.com is inducing breach of contract between Scotiabank and its banking customers,” said Scotia’s Joe Konecny. CIBC’s Rob McLeod was equally blunt. “You are responsible for any losses from any use by a third party that provides an online account aggregation service.”

My newest piece of unjustified advice on retirement that I learned is, "By 30, you should generally have about one year's salary tucked away into a retirement account." I am turning 30 at the end of the year and I only have about 33% of what I need to match that questionable statistic. Here is a random lovely article that supports the idea: http://www.cnbc.com/2017/02/22/heres-how-much-money-you-should-have-saved-at-every-age.html There is no way I could have ever met that goal. During my early to mid twenties I worked at startups that didn't offer me any retirement benefits so I eventually started my own ROTH IRA contributions. Also, up until recently I quit my lovely misogynistic company and got a more appropriate 30% raise at another place. BWM: be a minority in your chosen field.
