Cell-shaded paint style and a colour pallet from World of Warcraft is what does that, if you ask me.

That's pretty rad.

I can't remember if they have LotR stuff there, but you can always call them in advance and place an order to pick up at the event. It might be more advantageous for you as well, since they use the USD pricing in their catalogs over here, and their made up numbers are way worse than the current GBP to USD exchange rate.

Make sure you call them ASAP and get your order in though - they have cutoff dates, and if you miss them, you're out of luck.

I like it, although it's not without flaws. It's basically the exact same as the LotR wargame, basically serving as another edition. Most of my experience comes from the LotR game, but from the handful of Hobbit games I played it all still holds true.

Pros:
Pretty well balanced, especially for a GW game. There's an actual formula of what various stats are worth, so most rank-and-file troops are priced correctly.
Has a very wide range of stuff, including things not covered in the movies, so you can play as basically anything from lotr post-silmarillion
Rules are straightforward enough that it's easy to learn
Covers everything from heroes to hordes, and doesn't break

Cons:
Things can be really hard to kill. Defense tends to be significantly higher than offense. Good for having a hero face down a horde of goblins, bad when you have 20 guys fighting and one dies per turn.
Shooting is... not very good. Bow shots are weak, and the order of actions means that it's super hard to get off more than maybe one shot, and the way the cover system works means that you're not likely to hit much either
Fight skill is next to useless, Attacks stat is king. The pairing-off system for close combat also means that large fights can take a while
Huge centerpiece models are not good enough to justify the cost, so you'll rarely see Sauron or Smaug pull their weight
They updated Radagast's model to look like the movie. His old model is my favorite representation of him, and the new model has bird poo in its hair

Watching the extended Bo5A there were so many near fighters and set pieces that looked like they'd make amazing models. But I guess they only wanted to release models that were out with the main movie, I guess?

The Thranduil model's elk mount last week looked bad, but it might've been classic terrible GW camera angles.

This. I've never seen or heard of anyone at all locally who is even remotely interested in the LOTR game, but here we are, new models month after month. Either somebody somewhere else is driving the demand for them or FW Is wasting a shitload of time and money.

There is no intersection on the Venn diagram. Most people who enjoy LotR or the Hobbit are purists and don't want to intermingle with other Fantasy trash. Those of us who enjoy WFB are content to let them have their own little community and not bother us with their encyclopedic knowledge of Elven lineage.

Also, GW couldn't do any conversion due to licensing restrictions.

Exactly. I tried to do a conversion once. It wouldn't be hard to do, I just ran out steam because, well, homebrew projects.

I think LOTR/Hobbit is an excellent ruleset. My only major complaint is that shooting is utter rubbish. I think a pinning mechanic that would make people hit but not injured by arrows move at half speed (or not at all) could solve that though.

It's more that for a good few years it was basically the fantasy nerds equivalent to Gundam models. I knew a lot of D&D/Fantasy/LARP people who never did anything with wargames who just bought the LOTR models to build and paint them.

6 troopers with lasguns.

3 games later and everyone is pretty tooled up.

Yes, some example lists of 1000 points for different factions. Want to get some of my friends to try it and I have no idea what a solid start would look like.

Basically just buy as many dudes as you can with 1000 points. You have to have a leader, you can't have more than half as new recruits, and you can't have more than 2 specialists (or 3 for guard or uh... somebody else)

Some lists require that troops buy a gun, but regardless buy everybody a basic gun but don't go too overboard with upgrades. Get those after you've got a match or two in.

Any particular factions you're curious about?

You might try and take 2 gun beasts in your starting squad, it is pretty much the only way you'll get them. Starting with Deathspitters is fine, bear in mind you get 100 towards upgrades or recruits without burning a Promethium cache.

This will sound a bit crazy, but try this:

Leader - Deathspitter, Extended Carapace
New Spawn - Scything Talons, Adrenal Glands
Gun beast - Deathspitter
Gun beast - Scything Talons

1000 dead on.

After the first game burn a Promethium Cache and buy a Venom Cannon for the Scything Talon Gun Beast and 2 Adrenal Glands and an extended Carapace.

The only way to get a recruit is to burn a Promethium Caches and get a New Spawn with 25 points of stuff (Scything Talons are the minimum at 10, though you could give them a pair of Spinefists).

Tyranid Warriors need to be magnetised really.

Yeah I was thinking the same. Although, since your kill team is only like 5 models, it wouldn't be hard to just go ahead and make a bunch of extras with different configurations and swap them out as needed.

That makes sense. The idea of starting with Gun Beasts without the guns makes sense, but I guess it isn't something I had considered. Making lists for Tyranids is way harder than others. Might just stick with Chaos or Eldar.
