PittTheElder posted:Now I want to see a rescue helicopter deploy out the rear end end of the C-130, deploy the troops to the stricken vessel, then return to the mothership somehow. That seems like something the air force would have attempted at some point. The first were US Navy's two Akron-class airships, which each carried five biplane fighters modified to launch from and reattach to a trapeze system. It was a pretty crazy idea, but they built and operated them for a time. Both crashed during storms within two years of commissioning though and that was that. Pretty much every major power experimented with the concept but it never really worked. During the 60s the Air Force experimented with parasite fighters to protect the B-36. They built a dedicated concept, the XF-85 Goblin, and also looked at mating F-84s to the B-36 but never got it working properly. There was also a drawing board only nuclear powered transport, the Lockheed CL-1201, that they designed an airborne carrier version of, but obviously that project never got off the ground.

Why would you use probe and drogue for that? Boom refueling would go a lot quicker. Granted, you'd probably still need a shitton of tankers to refuel that fucker. Also, is it wrong I recognize this as being from an Ace Combat game?

If we had to get rid of a state, it should be North Dakota. I have nothing against the people that live there, but we can’t lose Wyoming because 1) it has Yellowstone and 2) It’s completely surrounded by other states. I would entertain a case for Vermont. It has less population and area and New Hampshire has better maple syrup anyway.

The Great War channel just uploaded a special video about Bloody April. Where the Royal Flying Corps took a beating in 1917, losing 275 aircraft to 66 over the span of 5 weeks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfMY1j4wXak

Interesting video, thanks for posting it. I really need to read more about WWI, as everything I read about it was when I was much younger, and I'm sure there are a lot of good resources now that didn't exist then.

Just watch that channel from the start. The main episodes cover WW1 week by week 100 years later. Then there are special episodes like this focusing on a specific battle or technology or person in more detail. World War 1 - 1914 (Season 1): http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB2vhKMBjSxO1lsrC98VOyOzfW0Gn8Tga And the 3 episode 'prelude to war' episodes they did before kicking off the main series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f11CKYB2FCA, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYrofaDfMKI & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmHxq28440c It is very good and has evolved quite a lot as they've gotten ad revenue/funding. It is nice to popup with two short videos a week I can watch before bed or on the toilet. drunkill fucked around with this message at 19:12 on Apr 29, 2017 |

Godholio posted:By drogue, which is basically impossible. What's amusing to me is there's another cutscene in the game where your plane is refueled by a different KC10, and there are separate boom or probe/drogue cutscenes depending on the plane you're flying - so yes, they certainly cared about a deep level of detail 99% of people missed. Presumably it's a deliberate choice, then, though I guess it could've been an animation or rigging problem that meant they went with six drogues. When you are actually playing the game those six KC10s are green squares on your HUD and obliterated long before visual range for you to even notice how they're fueling it, though

I wonder if you could do a reverse probe and drogue setup, where the receiver trails drogues that a tanker can hook into and pump fuel up.

Wingnut Ninja posted:I wonder if you could do a reverse probe and drogue setup, where the receiver trails drogues that a tanker can hook into and pump fuel up. B-50 Lucky Lady II being refueled by a KB-29, using grappled-line refueling. The receiver would trail a cable, which the tanker would capture and attach the actual fuel hose to, which would be winched back to the receiver, and attached. The tanker would then climb above and slightly aft of abeam the receiver, and pump fuel. Not really what you're talking about, but close enough to mention. February 26, 1949, Lucky Lady II took off from Carswell AFB in Texas, pointed east, and flew all the way around the world, supported by this type of aerial refueling, and landed at Carswell AFB.

Ok ok bear with me on this..... Giant nuclear powered mothership, right? Needs a way to refuel non-nuclear aircraft that visit it, right? Now, why send liquid fuel filled tankers to constantly top up the reservoir for the non nuclear swarm that are based on it, or might visit it. You've got a couple of gigawatts of electricity there... You make your airplanes electric powered, you can refuel them with Electrons!! Those aren't fuel lines with drogues, those are power cables! Fast charging isn't limited by cooling, you've got all the cooling you need at altitude!! This could work, people!
