Letter: Bring baseball back to Portland

By John Casper, VANCOUVER

Published: April 24, 2017, 6:00 AM

Well here it is — another spring in the Vancouver-Portland area and, in years past, the Portland Beavers would have been starting a new season. But not anymore. For seven long, boring summers baseball has not been in Portland. Instead, we are forced to suffer though a foreign so-called sport where most of the time nobody wins. It saddens me to think I will never be able to take my kids or grandkids to another Beaver baseball game. I also feel sorry for the kids who will never get to see a AAA baseball team in Portland.

My hope is that someday the Timbers will go to Europe, were they belong, and our Portland Beavers will return to Portland, where they belong. I live and hope for that day.

Surprise level that this guy lives in Vancouver WA? 0.0%.

At some point in the last year I discovered that Facebook Messenger filters out certain messages and found these in the "Filtered" folder. I think he had commented on an article a friend had shared and I felt like loving with him in the comments. I'm a little upset he correctly spells "foreign" now instead of "foregin" like in the past.

So Pablo Mastroeni has admitted the Rapids are punting on this season *already* and looking to 2018.

quote:

"Mastroeni acknowledges that a lot of what they're doing won't reach fruition this year. “We're definitely looking at 2018; there's a lot of great opportunities in 2018,” he says, and that much will depend on whom the Rapids acquire in the summer transfer window. They are targeting someone who can bring a “bit of culture in the attacking third.” That could be a playmaker, a steady goal-scorer or something in between.

Six games in and they're punting. :sigh:

Edit - The article makes it sound like they have a plan. Based on 2012 to the present I don't believe they've done *anything* to so much as hint they have a plan.

we even had stadium renderings for the first time ever. and out the window they go, just like any hopes of fostering an active and healthy soccer fanbase lmao

I thought the plan was "OH gently caress PAREJA LEFT... ERR WHAT DO WE DO KNOW, PABLO YOUR TURN"!!!

At least Ben Olsen is consistently "adequate" with his lovely journeymen pickups, Colorado probably have the worst front office since they managed to get fleeced by loving Minnesota United.

Bender: "I was God once." God: "Yes, I saw. You were doing well until everyone died."

Minnesota United are becoming real boys. One of their SGs is feuding with the league because they couldn't put their logo on a joint SG banner. The logo? A loon with a Soviet hammer and they are a 'Marxist' SG. They can't understand why MLS might be slightly against such an innocent logo. They're calling ticket reps and threatening to cancel season tickets.

They're all grown up.

Let's keep expanding when half the league is coasting on the attitude of "maybe in a decade we can sell this team and in the meantime let's do nothing to make the organization good."

I'm not joking, I'm really glad I support an original franchise. We may only get 80% attendance but our stadium is full of people who like soccer instead of the concept of soccer.

If this means we can send like 70% of supporters' groups to gulags then I am all in favour.

Counterpoint: the expansion teams are by and large the ones that give a poo poo. Keep expanding until we have enough Actually Ambitious teams to contract DC and maybe, just maybe, you can finally be happy.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying cheap tickets and empty stands. It's fun, and that's why I would go to a Reign or USL game. But low attendance and cheap tickets aren't because you "support an original franchise" or that you "like soccer instead of the concept of soccer", it's because your team is putting out a poo poo product in a poo poo location that people don't want to go to. They aren't keeping attendance down on purpose because they were founded earlier or have a fan purity test before they sell you tickets.

You also seem to be grossly misinformed about the cost and experience of attending a game at CenturyLink field.

A Marxist supporters group complaining to a single-entity sports organization that arguably remains viable primarily through expansion into new regions while also maintaining strict parity through a byzantine layer of rules, caps, restrictions, profit-sharing, and control over player contracts.

My point was that being an original franchise most of our supporters came to watch soccer when it was extremely unpopular because they liked it. The newer franchises seem to attract a the type of fans that want to go to games to bang a drum for 90 minutes with their back to the pitch and get attention. As for a "poo poo product" in a "poo poo location" you can make fun of the redbulls all you want but that's just a completely absurd statement. We have crap branding and marketing but to tell me that watching a winning/exciting team play in one of the nicest soccer specific stadiums in the country is poo poo then I want to know what poo poo means to you. As for the location it's easily accessible by rail for like 15 million people and a walk away from very nice restaurants and bars.

Not surprising a PNW fan felt the need to get upset when someone poked at the soccer hispterism that plagues a lot of MLS.

I've never had trouble watching and enjoying games in Seattle or Portland or San Jose or Columbus. There are always people that are just there as a social event, and there are always supporters that are seemingly more interesting in drinking and yelling than watching the game. But there's also always a soccer game going on, and it turns out I'm there to watch that and not be concerned with whether or not the people sitting next to me liked soccer "before it was cool".

Seltzer it's okay, I like my affordable seats and history too, let's be friends on this point

Audi Field is gonna be a sad place to be, since it's clear that the FO and MLS at large think they'll finally get the well-to-do defense contract Republicans they've been trying to market to this whole time. And RB at least has the luxury of being a joy to watch. DC plays ugly, workmanlike football on a good day, and it's the fresh talent who wasn't taught Bennyball who make the team work.
