I don't think it was ever Nintendo's intent for the game to be played competitively, in fact everything about Smash kind of screams "you shouldn't take this too seriously." But wherever there is a competitive element to anything, no matter how small, you'll find a subset of people who will fixate endlessly on that small thing and become super elite about it.

Competitive Melee particularly because the game is a technical mess, the same few characters dominate in the same few ways, the only legal stages are pretty boring and kind of bewildering (that Pokemon Stadium stage? Really?), and yes, I do have friends who were big into the local scene and deride the newer games almost sight unseen.

What ive learned of the quake playerbase: 1. Do not know how to gain/use map control 2. They really hate overwatch because it is a "low skill game" 3. Are bad at quake

Smash has fun enough core gameplay that it's cool however you play it and comp play is theoretically neat, but the players are all insane.

In college I was walking around the dorms and there was a Smash run going on. I played on the Link stage and lost in 90 seconds. That's my Smash-playing career in its entirety

Smash was the only 2d fighter at the fighting game tournament my college ran and everyone either played as kirby or star fox. The finale was two kirby's, they were the true heart of Smash.
