I can't help much, but if you've finished shading the torso then i think you're missing the backlight. The arms legs rear end etc. All have a strong backlight but the lighting / shadows aren't there on her outside ribcage to match the light source. You have the inside of her right arm sharply shadowed but her chest (which is further from the light) is lit for example.

that works, thanks for the reminder! I want to use the color gradient method by ArtGerm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IB9Jui9wQNg and after trying it out I realized how clean the image has to be for it to work properly, including proper lighting. I should probably color grade the different areas separately. Like the hair, skin, and clothes. I SUCK I CAN'T FIGURE OUT THE CHIPMUNK FACE augh please help I might just redo the face from reference. What I do sometimes to try to correct heads is to draw a skull over it, to figure out where there is too much or too little flesh. that's a good point. I'll try that. I just want to say I have no emotional attachment to this drawing and I will start over if I have to.

He was the only art teacher that taught me something like that (everyone else always said "just start over" or "sand/erase that area clean"), but I've always found it pretty useful.

The reason the smile looked faked is that you've got bedroom eyes on, which is a completely different mood, and the outline of her upper lip pulls down just that bit at the end. How much posting is too much posting? I don't want to annoy the poo poo out of everyone. I did some white girl skin studies earlier. The first three were completely blind (not that you could tell HAHAHHAA..ha...) and then onwards I used photo references. 1-3. Scrub. 4. 'How to paint skin' guide. 5. Using 4 to try and improve the top 3. 6. Painting. 7. Super glossy realistic. 8. Bruises. 9. Strong backlight. Does anyone have any critques to give me for improving the look of my skin? Colour choices, better lighting technique, or learning how to draw a circle freehand? I'd make a joke about it's okay to be rough, but I read back through the thread and well... i want to change my name now...

I usually just paint stuff in gray and then use a brush set to Overlay in photoshop to put on a pale pink-orange, and the rest that goes over it really depends on the rest of the lighting situation in the image. And don't worry about posting too much!

It's impossible to raise the lip in a scowl without engaging the wrinkles in the nose under the brow. Perfect crayon pointed out my teeth were too far forward and I see it in your drawing too. Rest of it looks solid to me, bruh

Oh yeah, a couple of other things: 1. Just do grayscale until you get good at value rendering. Heck, I paint almost everything grayscale and just color over it. 2. Don't get caught up with details. Learn to get big general areas of value correct first, or else you'll keep drawing things that look "patchy" or flat. If you click the ? to the left of my post, I posted an exercise for this earlier in the thread. e: I'll just link to it below actually

It's not completely accurate to the reference but I like to think of it as adding unity or beauty to the image.

When I'm life drawing I budget 80% of my time to building the proportions and the last 20% is spent rendering. The structure is very important and rendering is very fast and easy once that's done. I tend to shoot lines of reference from different parts of the figure to work things out. Take your time and get the general box shape first and then go from there. Look at where things are between two reference points and over time the image happens. HAVE FUN!

You're drawing from a 3D reference but then you're transferring it to a 2D medium. So you have to interpret the imperfections into a 2D format. And that's all about shapes. Something might be an irregular form irl but it becomes a triangle on your paper, for example.

I also think you could afford to go loads darker with your darkest colour and lighter with the highlights. Don't be afraid of overdoing it when you're building the basis of your drawing, because you'll be going over it and fixing things when you start really defining the pic. You can also use the dropper tool to pick colours from your reference pic in a pinch or to check if you're on the right track. I love the colour scheme and the lighting here but I'm sorry to say the hands are kinda jacked up. You've got the remnants of a sixth finger haunting the pinky on the right hand, and the knuckles would not line up on the on the left hand.

Your picture lacks contrast, which is why it looks washed out. If you take away the colours, you can tell the body is very close to the background in shade, and the shadows and lights aren't much different. I just scribbled over it with black overlay to darken the shadows (no adding highlights or new lighting) here: To show you it with a little darker values as an example.

I think the knuckle positions are slightly off, like shifted toward the base of the fingers but overall it's stylized enough that the finger shapes are acceptable. Obviously you're going for the circular patterns, and cartoony characters do all kinds of weird things. The rendering looks cool and overall it looks like it is exactly what it's supposed to be. I think the shadows on her hands might be a bit on the grey side, but that's about it.
