And, in tandem with that, requires that your tour be restricted to a list of approved locations?

It's the nearest legal casino for a lot of people in China, since you'd otherwise need to go out to Hong Kong or Macau.

I guess that makes sense, but I'd probably pay a little extra for a trip to Macau or a place without gulags.

Granted, having casinos just there to suck in hard currency from abroad is probably the way to do it in all honesty.

Also, it is quite clear that life in Pyongyang is far more privileged than the provinces but isn't like there isn't video/photographic evidence of the countryside and regional cities either. The only evidence from North Korea isn't just tour videos.

It is very clearly a regime that should be supported, but probably some effort needs to be applied to actually finding out what is going on. I mean there is a rumor taken for fact that the Pyongyang metro was only two stations, we now know it is a fully functional system. Also, it does seem to be evident that Chinese money is flowing into the country which if anything has propped up the regime.

the belief that as a westerner everything on earth revolves around you apparently extends to tours of a foreign country, where your presence is so important the dprk government sends stern minders to track your every move, rather than some people with basic tour guide training coming along to point out landmarks and not having any answers for your stupid political questions

their response to dprk government questions is about the same as it would be if a foreign tourist came to washington dc and kept asking about the us strategic nuclear reserve

The only people who say anything remotely similar to what you're saying are paid astroturfers. Anyone that has actually been reports that the government ran tour guides are basically in noticeable fear for their life if anything goes slightly off script, they're terrified of any handlers that are around, and the entire thing is as real as a spaghetti western set.

So are you just a moron or getting paid? If you're getting paid, how is the pay? Is it per post or do you get a flat salary?

After a decade of going in and out of the country, Cockerell is an old hand on North Korea.

He’s seen the Truman-esque symptoms that afflict visitors enough times to recognize the symptoms and puts the condition down to something he calls the “banality of normality.”

“When you go to North Korea you expect to see goose stepping and marching up and down and that every statement will be wildly anti-American and then you see someone fishing or on the Metro and you think, ‘it’s a setup, no one actually goes fishing or just sits on a bench,’” says Cockerell.

So, finally, the answer to the burning question: Where are all the people going?

“How the hell should I know?” says Cockerell. “They’re not going to an Internet café or a nightclub.

“They could be going somewhere very normal -- to work, to the shop, to see a friend -- the range of options is perhaps less than in other cities, but they’re not all going to anti-American rallies.”

And if that answer fails to convince the tourist with a severe case of Truman-esque surreal, then he has another line that usually helps pull them out of it: “Turn on the TV and watch it for a while -- you’ll soon see they’re not very good actors.”

Are you convinced that there's no way a government would go to those sorts of lengths? Their regime is based on complete control of the narrative. To them, manipulating perception is absolutely essential, even for insignificant tourists that might be coming just to take a few photos. Even if it doesn't influence the tourist's opinions, it sure as hell sends a message to the citizens who witness the tight management of international guests.

Kim Jong Un even stopped by to give some on-the-spot corrections to enhance the educational and enjoyable aspects of this most magnificent tour of this most magnificent country.

New Zealand tourist Will Seal watched the "Vice Guide to North Korea” ahead of his first visit.

“Watching that creates a certain impression in your mind, but all the weird elements that you see -- the propaganda, the pictures of the leaders everywhere, the army on the streets -- you can see those things in other countries, too,” says Seal.

“In Thailand there are pictures of the royal family everywhere. I felt like a lot of what we’d heard was overhyped.”

No one is trying to say that you'll see the military or anything like that on your tour. What started this is people saying that the tours are strictly government controlled and take place along a route that is filled with false buildings and other facades to make the country seem more vibrant and less like a third world shithole. Then you went on some crazy tirade against the concept that literally everyone else agrees with.

Absolutely no one here corroborates your position, and, in fact, many people have pointed out just how wrong you are. Now, I'm not the smartest guy in the room, but the smartest kid in america said you're a moron, and who am I to question wikipedia brown.
