Why did he draw Ireland's flag with a blue bar instead of green?

Or perhaps it's the Luxembourg's flag rotated?

Nevertheless, Truman refused to cash in on his celebrity and influence as a former president. He turned down lucrative offers, such as the one from a Florida real-estate developer inviting him to become "chairman, officer, or stockholder, at a figure of not less than $100,000." He would not make commercial endorsements, accept "consulting" fees, or engage in lobbying.

"I could never lend myself to any transaction, however respectable," Truman later wrote, "that would commercialize on the prestige and dignity of the office of the presidency." He did sell the rights to his memoirs for a handsome sum to Life magazine. But he turned down every other enticement to trade on his former position for private gain.

If you are going to wait for a saint to solve the USA's problems you are going to wait a long time.

I do think that Bernie wouldn't have done this, though. He seems to be pretty uninterested in money and has acquired very little wealth over an extremely long career in politics.

Afaik the only precedent for getting six-figure paychecks for speeches to Special Interests after your presidency is finished and keeping the money for yourself comes from people named either Clinton or Bush

In other words it's been done before but it's not some venerable institution that literally everyone has partaken in and people are only getting mad at because it's Obama. As a matter of fact, the eagle-eyed among you will remember that last year quite a lot was made of HRC making six-figure-paid speeches to Wall Street. It would actually be hugely inconsistent of the left to not care about it in Obama's case.

also Obama is still hugely influential in American politics; it's p naive to say he can take money from whoever he wants now that his term's up

Bernie wasn't forthright in releasing his taxes and his wife bankrupted a college. And "very little wealth" is only contextual; Sanders currently has three more houses than I do, I believe.

Mantis42 posted:

I'd rather Obama donate his fee from speaking to MOU bankers to a charity they'd hate, but at the end of the day it's more molehill than mountain than me. And the blanket huffing and puffing over his speaking fees in general is loving ridiculous. And pretty chuckle-worthy coming from the daddy-paid-for-my-Brooklyn-apartment podcast set. Obama doesn't care for the poor, says Hamilton Q. Whiteinghouser III

"It's the only way to learn and fix the problem" does a whole lotta work not actually working. Stump for a candidate? Hold a rally? Nah, see, I'm busy learning.

Maybe what liberals is saying is that Obama and everyone like him shouldn't be allowed to make that much money because they clearly can't figure out how to make it benefit everyone. Maybe Obama even agrees with this and wishes he wasn't able to take home bank for very little work?

Contextual is important. Most politicians would have wound up with more than that even if they didn't put any effort into it.

Bernie's lake house is the dumbest talking point and I can't believe we're still on it.

When you're the Senator from Vermont, you need a place in DC and a place in Vermont. The retirement home was bought with money his wife inherited. None of them are palatial estates or whatever. There is no reason to make a thing out of it at all.

It's amazing how this evidence of the abandonment of working class politics never has a loving thing to do with actual goddamn policy, it is always some bullshit purity scandal. Almost as if the actual problem is that leftists are the most susceptible people on the planet to tu quoque arguments and the reaction to anything Republicans say to deflect from their own policies is always "yes, that is 100% true, Democrats really are that bad".

Maybe THAT is the problem we should try and fix.
