I think player usage becomes an extreme example of trying to wring out maximum win potential out of a lineup. If that's your only complaint, surely your coach's systems must be good enough that we don't have to bemoan yet another Therrien dump-in. Remember the days when the Red Wings fans would argue about their 3rd defensive pairing despite having Babcock as coach?

In fairness, the Wings third pairing did suck. Also that team won a Cup, whereas AV has lost twice in the finals and once in the ECF which probably engenders a good deal more vitriol from fans of his teams for better or worse.

yeah, jesus.

I like AV, and think he's pretty easily a top 10 coach without any second though. But he does some really dumb poo poo at times. Though the current d group isn't exactly good. But the player usage in game 2 was pretty inexcusable, esp as it got into OT2

My thinking kind of boils down to while I don't think the Rangers roster is good enough to contend barring some hilarious hi jinks like the Caps melting down but Tom Wilson concussing Crosby and Malkin in one fell swoop with 15 seconds remaining in the series, I feel like they shouldn't be blowing leads or having some of the issues they've been having.

Like, Ottawa fans might disagree but I think the Rangers roster is more talented than the Sens but they're kind of under performing here and benching your best defensemen isn't helping. Putting out Holden and Staal to lose the game for you is hilarious considering you don't even need to care about advanced stats to see that they suck and give up a ton of chances against. High quality chances against even. e: and I'm not saying "there's no way the Rangers should lose to those scrubs the Sens!" but just that the Rangers have made some unforced errors and aren't living up to their talent.

So eh, I dunno, it's a weird feeling of "ok this team really isn't that good to be considered a cup favorite or anything but they COULD be playing better"

Which is why I feel like Gorton has to take away AV's toys and say "develop these new defensemen into a new and better defense

He does have a tendency to ignore certain players faults/advantages. Not sure if it's more a personality issue than anything else.
As for his coaching, I think he's very adept at creating an overall system that will work with the squad that he has, but that he's very poor at specifically coaching against other teams and will instead stick to his 'system', regardless of what the other team is doing.

It's not odd, the point is that fans will always complain about something even if they're a lock as a Cup finalist and if your only issue is minor depth players then the team probably has few real issues.

AV's biggest strength is also his weakness. He has been exceptional at getting a lot out of forward depth - be it Malhotra or Moore as the defensive zone faceoff specialist, or Grabner taking soft third line starts and burning guys on breakaways. He's good at getting something out of players who are not very good. He's got the immobile Dan Girardi as an immobile shot blocker/right crease coverer while letting McDonagh use his skating and strength a bit more. Minimized Girardi's badness, while McDonagh looks great most of the time. His nod to tough guy culture is Glass, who isn't very good at hockey, but also isn't a hothead and doesn't take many bad penalties. Glass is also decent at tying guys up off of faceoffs. The two Gs are both players who are not very good who have marginal utility in the roles he's found for them.

He has been great at finding softer minutes for Smith and Skjei where they thrive - especially catching favorable matchups during changes - but the other side of it is that he finds it better to drop Staal and Holden on a defensive zone faceoff and out out the others on the fly, rather than the other way around. I get the system and why he does it, it's just had notably awful consequences a few times.

The conclusions are fine overall, but it's odd for the first bunch of arguments to be "the good young players gave up less goals/shots/scoring-chances while playing less minutes". Going with counting stats over rates undermined the author's intent imo.

I didn' tread the whole thing but Skjei and Smith have been a lot better than Staal and Holden when given large amounts of minutes. It's nto a case of those guys getting soft and fewer minutes. They're just plain better

He can re-sign with Jersey with no issues. He could then be traded.

If he signs direct with another team, it needs GM approval.

Right, I agree with that conclusion, which is why I'm surprised that the writer used such a flawed method of demonstrating why they're better. "Staal/Holden gave up more (bad thing) than Skjei/Smith while playing many more minutes" doesn't support or refute anything, since it's almost always a true statement regardless of the two D pairings being compared.

The Sens are actually in basically the same spot. Boucher has half of a decent D group, and some younger better guys, and continues to dress and play the 'veteran' garbage. Ceci may be even more useless than Girardi and he plays more than anyone other than Karlsson. Ceci and Phaneuf draw the shutdown duties despite being one of the worst pairs in the league all drat season by almost every metric, fancy or old school. They bleed goals against any and all competition. Wideman has had their best possession numbers all year but is now scratched.

AV may be making mistakes but Boucher is matching him man for man. The Rangers clearly adjusted their neutral zone/blue line defense in game 2 and it was giving the Sens fits. They were lucky as hell to escape that game not being blown out... never mind winning.

Not playing that fourth line is the biggest mistake, though, because the depth forwards are the one spot where the Rangers are clearly more skilled than Ottawa.

Uh. Ceci is terrible, and Phaneuf isn't all that much better, but the players who are below them on the depth chart are just flat out worse than them.
