Also, as an aside, is Eastside Hockey Manager any good? It's on sale on the Humble Store and I was considering getting it.

If you like playing NHL be a GM mode without playing any of the games, then yeah it's pretty good.

It's the best NHL be a GM out there, which isn't saying a whole lot I guess, but it's pretty good. They just added the NCAA as playable which is cool. Make sure and get The Blue Line Rosters and the logo/face packs if you get it.

I should run another sim of our be a gm teams this offseason.

My only complaint with EHM is it takes some time to sim a season. I'd love to be able to just quick sim months at a time but it still takes a while to do that even if you have everything set to sim fast.

It's a good game though.

There's also a lot of minutiae I don't really like. I enjoy building a team and all that, but I don't like having to renew scouts contracts and crap like that.

Does anyone on SAS have a 'The Athletic' subscription? I've been thinking about pulling the trigger. It's Toronto sports beat which I'm not really interested in, but the occasional Dellow deep dive and reading some Mirtle pieces might be worth it even if I don't give a poo poo about Toronto teams or their sister Chicago site.

There is some minutiae I wish they had though. Like I wish they had a way to expand/edit the league (maybe a commissioner mode I dunno), and an escalating salary cap. The staff attributes/abilities/interactions are also way behind what you see in FM, and it'd be nice to see more media events like you see in FM (although maybe there's a mod that does this? I should look).

Same! One year I'll draft a fourth line that plays NHL games.

I have an Athletic subscription and I like it, the content is pretty good and it feels like every other outlet is getting worse. I'm still not sure I'll keep it up over the summer in terms of value, though.

I have poured innumerable hours of my life into that game. I only stopped playing because I switched to mac and it's PC only. I know how smokers feel because even though I've been off it for a year or more and I realize what a waste it was, I'd go back in a heartbeat.

I just wish the AI was better. The computer is pretty awful at managing the cap and also at trading. You'll see guys reach free agency who never should.

Also I like the idea of human manager sackings but if you turn them on it's way too easy to get fired. You could win three cups in a row and miss the playoffs the next year and get fired. Or you can make a trade that is ridiculously in your team's favor but the fans/owner hate the poo poo out of you for it. I guess that latter one makes sense if you're trading a fan favorite or something but it seems to happen all the time.

Aye Doc

finding a trade the EHM AI would actually accept was like looking for a nugget of corn in a mountain of poo poo, and the part if the game that made me finally quit when I could never acquire anyone worthwhile

T-Bone

The timing matters a lot. It's definitely programmed in that the AI will ask for less (especially if they're bad) in February and around the draft (especially if the player is on an expiring contract or underperforming on a big contract on a bad team). You'll see players drop a * value all the time.

e: Checking out team needs is worthwhile too, different teams will value different players/prospects/picks depending on their needs/philosophy (rebuilding/win now/etc).

Best player is probably still Crosby.

But straight up MVP to his team is McDavid.

(Goalies shouldn't be nominated otherwise they should win the award every year)

Yeah, I was gonna say Talbot did more than McDavid to drag the Oilers to the playoffs.

Maybe the Hart should just be for most valuable skater.

Columbus improved 32 pts largely because of Bobbo's play though, so it's not unreasonable to give him the nod

He was a massive favourite for the Vezina anyways but it's the GMs voting for the Vezina and the writers voting for the Hart and has produced big differences before. Like Varlamov was way ahead of Rask in the Hart voting in 2014, Rinne was ahead of Thomas in 2011, Mason ahead of Thomas in 2009, Luongo ahead of Brodeur in 2007...

Based on a VORP-type metric? Yea, I can def agree with that. If best SV % is .3-.4 above replacement then that's close to a gpg.
