Oddly the few japanese POWs were treated better than the interned japanese americans because the military treated POWs well but the civilian administration didn't. Or at least that's what NPR told me!

My point is more that like many of the stories in grandpa chat the consequences of WWII reach down through the years and have repercussions that are not necessarily apparent.

My Paternal grandfather was a plant manager at GM and spent the war supervising the production of Wildcats and other aircraft. My maternal grandfather was in the 1st Armored Division and served from Torch to VE Day as a Sherman driver. Had a lot of stories about everything from Kasserine to Anzio, to Rome.

   Curses!  We trade planes here.  An unescorted bomber pays the price.   The Kido Butai finally launch and rain hell down on the Allies.  A few planes return in the afternoon to mop up.   Its always nice to have the carriers in operation.  I'm sure these will be joined by more.

As the son of an internee, it saddens me that your grandparents never came around, but I can't hold it against them. Your story reminds me of the Presidential campaign and Trump's claim that thousands cheered 9/11 in New Jersey. No doubt some will continue to believe that six decades on.

It means they're civilian vessels converted to wartime service. xAK vs AK are going to be slower, less armed, less armored, and less optimized for rapid loading/unloading. APs are particularly valuable because they're frequently able to be converted into APAs which are "assault" transports. In WitP loading and unloading takes time and being able to fully unload in one time period for island and especially atoll assaults makes a huge difference. This is especially true for attacks facing shore batteries.

   I was literally just think we've not seen a sub in awhile.  We have a terrible day against a large flight of Liberators. This may be a new squadron.  Oh look, one of our subs as well.   Owch.  We can't lose that many planes to bombers!  We come out ahead once you consider older kills.  The Kiddo Butai refit has begun. We overwhelm the shipyards somewhat.

Depends on the ship and the extent of the refit. If you look at the chart Grey posted the "Days" column shows the number of days that they'll be out of action.

Is there some variability to that number? Like, you're told that it'll take 20 days for the refit, but then on the fifth day someone accidentally takes an acetylene torch to a long lance and welp now it's going to take a bit longer?

My grandfather was an Air Force puke but when he got into the service WWII was over for quite a while. I posted about him in GIP so I'll just quote that:quote:My grandfather enlisted in the Air Force in 1952 (it was either that or spend the next 30 years painting cathode ray tubes). He became a computer programmer, and spent the next decade or so bouncing around and doing stuff (including getting a medal for automating the Alaskan Airforce Command's payroll). Now, all of this is boring poo poo none of you want to hear about, so I'll skip over a bunch of it and get to the entertaining part: when he was stationed at Tyndall AFB in Florida. Being good at his job, he had a habit of finishing by noon and then spending the rest of the day "on call" in the NCO club in case something happened (nothing ever happened). All was well in NCO-land, until a new lieutenant showed up and got pissed because one of his NCOs was spending most of his shifts drunk in the club. Unwisely, my grandfather decided to ignore the lieutenant's order to stay in the office, leaving him the choice of taking an Article 15 (which would have ended his career) or transferring to the JSC (which probably would have ended his career). So off he goes to the Pentagon, because he couldn't keep away from the booze but didn't want to lose his pension My grandfather on my mom's side worked at the Twin Cities Ammunition Plant for the entire war, and, despite all the nasty poo poo he got exposed to, lived to a ripe old age. Not sure what my great grandparents were up to; I'll ask around since I'm kinda curious.

I dont think theres any variability on refits or repairs apart from damage sustained by the dock/port/shipyard/ship while its being refitted. Same applies to repairs.

You can try to speed up refits but you have to monitor the shipwrights' fatigue numbers closely, especially if your local coffee pools are low, or there is an increased chance of mishaps. I learned this the hard way by getting half my welding aces KIA. Also they welded Yamato to Ise.

Actually I believe ports with repair capability have both piers and drydocks and if you have no drydock space, pier-side repairs take much longer for large/capital ships. Right?

  Waves of Liberators continue to pound the island.  Owch, we took some heavy losses there.  It's a very poor day.  We lost a lot of planes with nothing to really show for it. So Lady and Gentlemen. I'm considering something a little masochistic - buying Tunisa '43, a hard grog RTS. playing the tutorial then (video) LPing a campaign as the Americans. For historical accuracy! What do you guys think?

Personally I don't like VLPs at all. I read LPs like on lunch breaks at work or while I'm on my phone. If I have enough time to sit down and watch a video then I'm just going to play a game. I would happily read another screenshot LP by you but wouldn't watch videos. I have no idea if this is a common sentiment or if people like videos.

I like them both. I enjoyed those old biplanes over WWI VLPs Grey used to do a couple years ago, for example. I definitely do more SSLPs than VLPs, but having a VLP on while I edit documents is cool and good.

For slow-paced grog strategy games VLPs are awful. You can skim a screenshot update because the LPer has already self-selected the exciting bits. You can't skim a 30-minute video when you have no idea what the exciting bits will be.
