Macron's success seems completely situational, and a result of a meltdown of the PS/Fillon. He was polling much closer to 14-15% before Fillon collapsed, and a fair number of L'R voters went over to his side because Fillon is dirty as sin. Also he was also to pull from PS which simultaneously went more left-wing but not left-wing enough and more or less has "PASOK'ed" itself. He was able to triangulate the situation enough where he could capitalize the center. Now he is in the second-round and is facing Le Pen, who simply doesn't appeal to a majority of the population (although that gap is slowly slipping). Basically, he literally has won this thing by default because his opponents are either too dysfunctional or extreme to through the electoral process.
