goalies have only won the hart trophy seven times so i think the issue of hart voting becoming all goalies all the time is probably a good ways off, if it ever arrives. just remember the next time you read a spicy hot take from a guy working for a dying newspaper that he probably votes on the hart trophy (like villain of the hour rob rossi, who is in fact a PHWA member) and try to imagine how little of a poo poo that guy likely gives about any hypothetical WAR metric saying goalies rule and skaters drool

I honestly don't think the trade is Therrien's fault. Eller et al, sure, but not PK. PK was the result of Therrien saying "I think we need more stability on the blue line" and Bergevin getting a call from Nashville "hey we'll give you Shea if you give us PK" which resulted in 2 + -5 = 5.

If Bob was league average the Blue Jackets would have added roughly 32 goals against this past season. Got to think the difference between having Crosby/McDavid out there over an average forward is worth more than 32 goals Especially when you consider they can affect the game offensively as well as defensively A Typical Goon fucked around with this message at 13:10 on May 2, 2017 |

Jackets are trying to sign something called Vladislav Gavrikov out of the KHL, who could conceivably push Ryan Murray out of the lineup: http://www.dispatch.com/sports/20170501/blue-jackets-want-to-add-russian-to-blue-line I remember when Ryan Murray was automatically the best defenseman on the team just by showing up. That's five CBJ nominations for hardware- Bob (Vezina, Hart), Torts (Adams), Werenski (Calder), Foligno (some NHL charity award).

I was never sold on him as the 2nd overall pick, but he's struck me as a serviceable bottom pairing guy at worst. Injuries have been his major downfall, but he's been a 20pt guy when healthy. Is there some serious deficiency to his game that he's at risk of being replaced by a 9 points in the KHL guy? He seems like a decent reclamation project for a rebuilding team like Vancouver. I'd happily flip that 2nd round pick we get for Torts back to you for him.

As it stands, hard to fault the votes for Bobs and the two best players in the league. The other near miss who you could make a case for over Bobrovsky is Kucherov, who had a much better season than seems to have been recognized.

Not making the playoffs seems to be a huge black mark for Hart trophy voters, and I don't think that's completely unreasonable if you go by the "most valuable to their team" reading of the award (which most people don't). Plus Tampa were very good last year and took a giant step back, it's hard to say that anyone on that team deserves recognition as team MVP after that letdown of a season.

It's not that Murray is bad, it's just that he's been pushed down the lineup by the additions of Jones, Werenski, and Nutivaara, an improved Savard, and a seemingly rejuvenated JMFJ. He seemed to play alright with Nutsack, but wasn't overly flashy. Get another decent defenseman to slot onto the third pair (Gavrikov, Gabriel Carlsson, Quincey did fine in Columbus but probably doesn't come back), and there suddenly isn't enough room at the Inn. Aaron Portzline implied after the CBJ were eliminated that there might be some health issues beyond the wrist injury which cost him his season, too. What that's supposed to mean, I still don't know.

Yeah, freshest in the minds of the voters would be the last 20 games of the season where Burns had 2 goals and 8 assists going -4 while the Sharks went 9-11-0 Over that same period, Mcdavid getting 10 goals and 21 assits going +9 while the Oilers went 14-5-1 In the last 20 games, Mcdavid scored 31% of his season points total, Burns scored 14.4% of his points total. Burns went cold and his team suffered.

You would think this would help Bob's case. A few goons felt CBJ still would've made the playoffs with adequate goaltending, but they don't have 50 wins without in net playing as he did most of the season.
