I still have faith given that this is coming from id Software, which had virtually everything going against it from the word go last year and then turned out with one of the best games of the year.

Every multiplayer shooter not named Splatoon is bound to have loot boxes now, I've accepted that in my heart. I'd be more worried about it if this was coming from EA or Ubisoft. When is this coming out?

That sounds way lower than expected to be honest. Like what percent of the population is truly awful? Gotta be like high 60%'s at least.

But maybe there's just so much more downtime that it's easier to show it than say in a fighting game or whatever.

Yeah, 10 people stuck in the same game for 40+ minutes is really a deadly combination of people + time.

When I was in college, the dorms were into Dota. I once played a match with them and did all right, but a friend of mine was super into it and his roommate fed the enemy team pretty badly.

After the match was over my friend was berating and yelling at his roommate for literally 10 minutes, Full Metal Jacket style, so everyone in the hallway could hear.

"DON'T GO PAST RIVER" is still a joke a decade later

If the Quake NDA's up, then I can say it's decent but I really think the character stuff just muddies the water since on top of their abilities they'll all have different health, armor, speed values and movement physics, and the netcode seems kind of spotty. I'm pretty sure the lightning gun's damage is based on tick-rate because sometimes that thing can just focus you down in a second. But yeah, it's the character stuff I'm not a fan of since it can mean the difference between gibbing a fool in two rocket hits or three which just feels inconsistent. Of course, I'll admit that I was never big into Quake, I was more of an UT guy. Speaking of which...

That sucks. :/ I miss the days of Quake 2 when people were making tons of mods. I wish someone would bring that back. I guess Epic Games is trying to do that with the new Unreal Tournament but I have no idea what the status of that title is at.

Kind of hard to tell. I think they're ramping up production because so far this year they've released a build every month and their blog updates are waaaaaay more consistent. But they're also constantly changing and rebalancing stuff in a way that's pissing off the grogs and adding and changing guns so it's very much in flux. I try it once or twice a year but at this point I'm just waiting for a proper release. I've loved it everytime I've played, and I really dig the look, especially after UT3's over-designed aesthetic.

The first I kinda agree, but the 2nd sounds you're poo-pooing anyone being invested in a game made to be competitive. People will be emotional whether it's CSGO, Smash Brothers, or whatever else if they're going in to win it.

MOBAs in general have long playtimes and high barriers to entry so I feel like that winnows down your playerbase somewhat and what's left over is a population of gamers who are biased towards toxic behavior. Add to that the multitude of ways you can slight or screw your own team over and it's a recipe for disaster.

If you're angry and emotional that the big candy cane man is beating down your space waifu, try to take a step back for a moment and reflect upon the various poor life decisions that led you to this point. I read an LP of the original visual novel here years ago, so I'm a bit fuzzy on the details. But the premise is that every X number of years (I can't remember the exact timeframe) the holy grail appears, and seven magicians are given the opportunity to summon historical figures and fight to the last person standing. That person can then wish for anything from the holy grail. And that whole development studio (I'm not sure if they have one writer or several?) gets very anal about rules of magic and types of magic and so on, so the original story was mostly a lot of characters doing weird exploitations of the rules of the grail tournament for various ends. One of the story paths is also full of really gross sexual assult and abuse, which is where I decided to stop following the LP!

But yeah, I think the other games/stories in that franchise are about other grail tournaments of various kinds, or crossovers with other games that studio has made.

I don't know if I'd recommend it. It kinda swings between horror and action. If you can stomach some gross and tasteless sexual horror and really love stories built around rules lawyering fictional magic systems, give it a shot?

The premise is that there is a battle royale that occurs between modern day wizards who wield super powerful familiars taken out of history and myth. Hercules fighting Robin Hood fighting Lancelot fighting Alexander the Great, etc. It's a franchise that looks more complicated than it actually is because there are so many spinoffs and multiple timelines, but the original core of it (stay night, Zero, hollow ataraxia) make for a fairly engrossing/compelling narrative in my view depending upon your tolerances for overly wordy exposition and general action/fantasy anime nonsense. The original Visual Novel stay night especially I feel has a pretty strong set of character arcs for its principle cast and a handful of fairly clever twists and some memorable action set pieces. It has plenty of warts and a kind of mediocre first arc/route, but those good points generally were enough to get it past that. Obviously, your mileage may vary on that.

Liking persona doesn't really matter at all IMO, other than having a tolerance for general anime shenanigans. The only vague similarity I'd give between the two is that the PSP spinoff Fate/Extra has a bit of a Persona calendar/S. Link system. TBQH I can't really speak for the rest it all that much because the series kind of lost me once it dived into its billion spinoffs (well, mostly the f2p mobile game Fate/Grand Order).

When I first played it I thought the narrative was pretty bad and only got worse with convoluted time rift nonsense, which threw the more interesting political and racial themes out the window early. It looks good but the combat is nothing special at all. I remember when I got the first power which is some psychokinesis and all it amounts to is a loving grenade. Like, it's no different than if you threw a real grenade as opposed to this incredible power. At that juncture I was just like "oh."

echoing everything already said, but also worth mentioning there's an updated release of f/sn that cuts out all the sexual content including the aforementioned sexual abuse. people mention fate/zero a lot but i wouldn't recommend starting with it at all even though it's a prequel, it technically spoils some really big reveals and it's just kind of a way edgier and dumber story than f/sn and will give you a very different idea of what the series in general is like if you're actually trying to get into it

Like, I've only ever had 1 truly bad moba experience and that was with a goon who promised he was not gonna get mad but then proceeded to do nothing but scream and shout because we weren't playing optimally, and that was not a fun time, especially since my fiancee was playing with us and she has PTSD and people shouting at her like that causes her to go into a panic and this goon was all "I don't care, she was playing badly!" and that's super lovely.
