Still testing the waters since I just started playing on the weekend, Raynor is definitely the most newbie-friendly hero I've tried. Picked up Zarya and I've been liking her a lot too. On the support side, Malfurion and Tassadar are the ones I'm having the most fun with.

It's been super fun tooling around on the free rotation guys learning what all the shiny buttons do and smashing the AI. It's really impressive how different heroes feel from each other out of the dozen or so I've played.

As a clueless newbie who doesn't own Tracer should I hop into the Brawl mode and awkwardly lose a couple games for the free loot box before that resets?

If you take all the talents that up your AA damage Raynor is pretty good, I don't really understand people who despise him. His +survivability/aoe buff powers are OK also but not as good.

Zarya is infuriating when played well, Malfurion is considered one of the best supports, and Tassadar since his re-work has been real good.

I don't really understand the Raynor hate either. His Q is incredibly good if fully talented and used well, and Hyperion is such a good ult for teamfights or fort pushes.

Tried Nova a few times and I can definitely understand the dislike, she just doesn't contribute anything and she can't even gank well.

Could just be personal bias but I'm finding Murky to be a pretty solid choice on Hanamura. You have enough waveclear to easily blow through a minion wave and start pressuring towers and forts, and along with that you've got a bribe talent at level 1 to take camps easier, so you have multiple ways to generate XP for your team. I just got out of a QM game where it was 8 assassins and 2 specialists so just insane deathmatch city all over the place, and even though fights kept going back and forth with a bunch of ours dying and a bunch of theirs dying, I still managed to keep us at an XP advantage for most of the game.

Much like LiLi, most of Raynor's strategy is placement instead of button pressing so he gets a bad rap. It also doesn't help that bad Raynors love hammering their Q on a fleeing dude -knocking it out of range of teammates who would've sealed the deal.
It's also just a workhorse type, so doesn't really get flashy or high skill ceiling plays other characters get.

edit: Try using space to open the chests. It'll save some time at least.

Any hero that you can get bribe is great for Hanamura, the "big" creep camps near each base are a single unit, so you can clear the camp instantly with 1 charge, maybe even snag the opposite one if you have 2x charges early on. You easily have enough time to stop and drop the camp while your payload is about to appear. It's free real estate!

I tried out Murkey tonight, I was solo vs solo Gul'dan. He could not do anything to shut me down on his own. Any hero that has a channel, like life drain or Leoric's drain or Azmodan's laser, feels so good to bait them into casting and then just drop a blowfish -> bubble. I even got the enemy Li-Ming to waste a couple disintegrate rays on me.

Winning a game in QM gives you a flat 50k bonus - you don't get that in Vs. AI.

Do you get more gold in QM compared to vs AI mode too?

5 man party XP bonus on top of stim pack has made QM an endless festival of loot boxes for now. I still have characters at level 1. Got 7 days stim from beginner chest after doing tutorial. In a couple days, I got another 7 day stim pack from a chest. Has anyone else been getting continuous stim packs from chests? For now, it's a huge help. I can get a character to level 5 super fast, and have plenty that still need to hit that mark. That's a whole lotta chests that are worth rerolling for a perfect drop.

Game on Braxis Holdout which I actually kind of like because if you're getting stomped at least it's over quickly and if you win, well, likewise. Spent the whole game feeling like I was on the back foot having to deal with a very aggro Kerrigan and her buddies Sylvanis and Varian but some quick bribery and a stolen camp turned things around along with a choice octograb. Whoever recommended Fishy Deal, that's a good call, I'm liking it more than I thought I would.

Don't forget to buy a megabundle BEFORE opening any chests.

Played a couple of games with some kind goons yesterday, had a lot of fun. It felt a little awkward having to last-pick when I know nothing about drafting, and because of a very limited hero pool it's hard for those I'm playing with to offer suggestions. I'm not sure how much I contributed, but at least it didn't feel like I made a huge fool of myself.

We won both games though, but I noticed that it was hard knowing if we were winning or not, and even if we were winning a team fight or not. Maybe it's my inexperience, but at least in Dota2 I usually always know who's winning.

Anyway, thanks to the guys I played with, and hopefully I'll play some more games soon!

You did pretty fine! As a tip, since you have a limited pool of heroes, it's worth telling people in party who you have so we can build around that. Otherwise everyone will just play what they want to play, assuming you own 99% of the roster like everyone else. :v:

Re: telling whether you're winning a fight or not, some of it boils down to knowing hero mechanics (e.g. a Stim Droned Zul'jin who has Taz'dingo in reserve means "run away"), but mostly it's just about looking at life bars. If your team is down one or more heroes compared to the other team and you're not in a situation where they're all on 30% HP and you're all on 80%, it's going to be very difficult to win the fight, and you're better off just getting out and letting them take the objective than going in one by one to die.

Avalerion posted:

You can't delete quests, but you only get vs. AI quests below a certain (fairly low) profile level, IIRC. Once you've got a few hero levels, the game will stop giving them to you.

If you're stuck with a bunch of vs. AI quests the easiest way to finish them is to pick Sylvanas, play with AI teammates, and get all the bots to follow you and push down a lane. If you have someone with you who can pick Hammer, it goes even faster.

I've played Dota for years, but the stress of it gives me basically permanent stage-fright. I enjoy watching it as an e-sport, but the players are so toxic and the mistakes so punishing.

But gently caress do I like HotS. I find myself constantly playing and constantly enjoying myself. Whereas in DotA I would have to spend hours learning item builds and optimal strategies for a hero to even begin to feel like I have a handle on the hero enough to play with others, in HotS I feel I can just jump in. No fear of games dragging on to an hour, no worry about ruining everything for everyone. I can actually just have a good time.

In the few matches I've seen TLV on hanamura they have been really strong. Each viking counts as a body for pushing carts so they can push one or both carts by themselves while the rest of the team contests the enemy payload or pushes down forts.

Vikings are strong on Hanamura in that they can do a lot of stuff at once, but imo it's probably not worth it unless you're really confident the other 4 people can handle team fights a man down. Fights are so important on that map.

It's been long enough for the stats to build up so here are the Objectively Best Heroes For Hanamura, according to hotslogs hero league data:

Azmodan (61.2%)
Constant passive split push and can contribute to clearing waves/helping in team fights while pushing/contesting a completely different payload. You can just run in and drop Demonic Invasion and immediately leave and worst case is an enemy hero has to come clean up your mess while a 5v4 happens elsewhere.

Samuro (58.6%)
I guess being slippery is really good? Can solo push a payload without much risk of being ganked. Also team fights encourage staying in one spot which benefits Samuro as people don't want to run away from him as easily.

Probius (56.5%)
Huge ability to set up in lane and contest enemy payloads. You know exactly where it's going so easy to get ready.

Zul'jin (56.0%)
Can back off from team fights, heal up, and come back quickly. Also really good in the smaller skirmishes that tend to happen.

LI Li (55.7%)
Probably only here because of Li Li's OP as gently caress blind build.

The worst heroes are - surprise! - Medivh, Tassadar, Abathur, and also Muradin and Zeratul are very bad apparently.

Had an amazing Hanamura comeback last night with some goons. 1-4 on the verge of a loss when we take a teamfight victory, and the team pushes the payload while I set up to take a fort as probius. 1-3, then we push the fort down for 2x shot next. No one on map so we rush to boss to find them fighting it. With the boss at half health, the game explodes into a huge teamfight with the boss eating and killing people as it goes on. We pick up a quad and finish the boss, then get into a payload race against the one person on the enemy team who had already started to push their payload alone. One hell of a close game and games like that are why this game is so enjoyable.

I also had an amazing comeback game with Sylvanas on that Zerg map. Aside from sylvanas just being good against the big swarm, it was my first time playing her in a very long time and I took Possession as a talent to try it out. Turns out you can use it on enemy siege creeps.

That fact single-handedly turned a lost game into a relatively easy win. The cool down is low enough that you can convert every siege creep on every wave and end up with a huge push of 5+ siege creeps going on the opposite direction.

That's definitely a strategy that would only work on the Zerg map, but man, that really made me appreciate Possession.
