not sure where you're at but yes, that sounds absurdly low for contracting. you should be able to get (at least) that as a regular employee in any decent market.

yeahhhh. that's what I thought. i am just getting out of my bachelors, but I have a few years of working doing programming stuff from before that. also, it's based out of san jose, sooooo low for the area.

am i the only one who reads "unlimited vacation" as "no vacation"?

I was taking an HR class when netflix' policy was announced and the teacher thought i was being super negative

yes. it means it's the kind if environment that has no work-life balance and everyone is expected to be working all the time. I mean, you could take a vacation, but it looks bad because everyone else is always busy and you should be too.

also unlimited vacation sounds like a great way to eliminate fixed PTO buckets and the associated legally required payouts when the employee leaves for unused balances

it's 100% this

it also gets around some of the cash-on-hand accounting requirements for accrued pto payouts although those vary from state to state.

yeah thats way low. start with a target salary, figure out what that would be hourly for however many hours your contract is for, then double the hourly amount for 1099. if youre doing desktop support, 35/hr is reasonable. if you're an engineer, lol no.

thanks for your help. i'd actually be w2'd through a contracting company, so a bit better, but yeah. i guess i'll ask for like 40? it is neat stuff that i'd like to work with.

always factor location in. 40 in my area would be solid but 40 in San Jose is low. unless they've already come out and said "we're offering 35" then tell them the average rate for the position in the area is about 52. if they bid lower as a "starting salary" and indicate they'll ramp it up, ok, if they tell you "no 35 or walk" id probably walk

of course this depends on your current employment scenario. if you need a job, take it, but negotiate from a place of informed confidence when you can

ive been at this job for 9 months, some startup just emailed me from a paper resume i gave them during the last search. they actually saw that i have a job and are asking for recommendations of other folks, which i thought had a touch of class. so, any of you goobers wanna do FW at an IoT startup?
