And the real kicker? It lags bad for some reason when trying to get away from that massive a gravity well. So I've got the throttle up full and it's sluggishly pulling forward as I'm watching the heat climb back up after the sink dump.

I think this is the single closest call I've had in the game. I had one earlier this week earlier on the trek where it put me smack in the middle of a A class binary pair. Two huge A classes. This put that to shame. The funny thing is, on the starmap in realistic mode it gave exactly zero indication that there was a red giant in the system. Normally when you target it pops the companion out. It popped nothing out so I basically had no idea what I was walking into. I'm staying out of the neutron fields until I safely get to the Great Annihilator, to Sag A and then finally to Colonia. I am playing it safe from here on out.

Edit: Also, I jumped through a 30 solar diameter Red Giant. :smug:

After trying the AspX, I sold my DBX. The large scoop is the best for quick jumping, heat only seems to be a problem if you try jumping while scooping. Also has the cockpit style that I enjoy the most for maneuverability.

I am the opposite. I never loved the AspX other than it's long jump range and it's great flexibility to do everything but combat. But I hate it's drifting and paper shields. I have crash into everything including the ground enough times that I named it Lithobraking after KSP. Seriously I think I have died the most in this ship from crashing into things, let alone being the ship with the most collision damage.

After getting other ships and now the DBX buff, I have grown to despise the AspX. The DBX is more fun to fly, especially around stations and on planets. It also has a longer jump range too. Sure it's fuel scoop is not great, but it's not a big deal considering it's range makes scooping within the bubble not a priority. For exploring I just park the ship while it scans the star and refuels while I look at the system map to decide what to do. Plus it runs so cool that I just fly closer to the star for max fill rate and I can jump out while still scooping. It's hands down superior on planets too.

Right now my AspX is fitted for long range cargo running for missions/CG that need something that can land at outposts. But I am thinking of just switching to a Python for all mission/outpost tasks and just use it as another bubble taxi. It's still has a great jump range, good in super cruise, a super fast scoop and is still flexible to keep around.

I just use mine for fun flying/planets/wake scanning/courier/taxi. I have been thinking of trying a long range weapon build on it and use it's speed to kite. I never have because it's too much of a gimmick and I like my FDL too much for combat.

You are just recreating 'The Mote in God's Eye' by jumping into a Red Giant because the jump point was in the star.

They do - Couriers have ridiculously beefy shields for something their relative size and agility. They also have four utility mounts, so they can make themselves even tougher with multiple shield boosters. Once the shield foes down, though, the hull is pretty fragile.

I think the DBX is more interesting than the AspE, but the AspE was way more viable as a multirole. I ended up trading in my AspE for a Python eventually, but for anything longer than like 10 jumps in the Python, I go there in a DBX that I bought with basically loose change (you can A-rank that thing in every area that matters for like 12 million or less) and have the Python shipped to me.

Go to the hazrez in a super-shielded Cutter in solo. Launch your fighter, make sure turrets are set to auto, full pips to shields and the rest to weps, have one ton gold in your cargo hold, fall asleep.

The Viper1 method is this plus wing up with other DF's to do the heavy lifting. Just fly around and aggro everything with your beam turrets while watching a movie or something.

Speaking of Quince and Anacondas, I went and bought my 'Conda, engineered it as a long-range exploration ship...

Then packed it full of cabins, lasers, and a big-rear end shield generator with reinforcements. Now I'm the driver of the Battlebus, registry code FITEME.

The DBX versus AspX thing is totally up to personal preference, assuming you have the money to kit an AspX out well. DBX has better legs, AspX will fit a much bigger fuel scoop.

Edit: This is assuming you're talking about an exploration boat, if you want to do poo poo other than putter around the AspX is a clear winner.

The FDL is a great PVE/PVP ship. It's my main combat ship right now until I can afford a combat fitted Anaconda, even then I will keep it since it flies better and has a great shield tank. I may avoid flying my AspX now, but I still keep it because of how useful it can be when I need it, like with this last CG trade event which made it easy to get to 50% in a short time.

It's just the DBX buff has made it a great ship for the roles it does well in, which are some of the roles the AspX was king in.

Basically specialized ships are better than multi-role ships when you can afford them and transport them around. Unless you really like refitting the your ships all the time or you have an Anaconda that can do everything all the time. The AspX is great if you don't have alot of money, but it will make the money needed to start having specialized ships and enjoy the game.
