Simply Simon posted:50% of the skills in DX:HR are completely loving useless, and another 50% of the theoretically useful ones are pointless for someone with a focused playstyle (you don't need armor and better gunplay on a stealth character, and no superhacking on a shootman). Once I realized that there is actually no shortage of skill points at any time after you reach the first Hub and can do sidequests, it became far more liberating to just do whatever. Skip half the level with a hack. Don't meticulously lure apart and stealthily knock out those two guys guarding a single weapon upgrade you'll never use. It's not worth your time. Just eat the alarm and shoot everyone dead, then explore. If you don't need that achievement, it really doesn't matter at all. I'm pretty sure that on Normal if you tried hard enough you can max out every skill. I nearly did on my first run through, anyway.

I get that, my history with RCT games in general was "do all the scenarios, play the sandbox for a while, then get board because I'm not a good terrain designer". If there were sandboxes that had pre-designed terrain, I'd prolly never stop playing them.

I lost interest in Cities: Skylines over its free weekend because there were no scenarios at all so I progressed through the unlocks in one city and then it was like "welp, I've seen and done everything this game has to offer" The scenarios in the original Rollercoaster Tycoon were a real pain because there was no fast-forward option, so a single one could take an entire day in real time to run from start to finish.

I really wanted to like Cities: Skylines but the traffic management was just a huge pain in the rear end to deal with. I've had cities literally drown to death in garage and corpses because all the garage trucks and hearses were stuck in traffic somewhere.

I could never keep a lot of interest in Sim City 4 because as fun as it is to create the maps yourself, there's like 100 tiles to make terrain for and gently caress that.

I've probably said this, but almost every Simcity game (and a whole lot of their competitors) has eventually dragged itself down for me because of the ultimate sameness of the result. Sure, you can put them together in different ways, but you're all going to have the same housing buildings, office buildings, and industrial buildings. Because of that, my favorite Simcity game is the one a lot of fans dislike: Simcity Societies. Go hard into one of eight (I think?) different core values, and you get drastically different looking cities. The same office building could be colored pink and covered in balloons, covered with cameras, full of neon pseudo-Japan wording, or entirely other things. Even the friggin roads change.

It has rewards for tanking your economy or having rampant crime but I'd really like something that took it to another level somehow instead of the end result of everything being a utopia more or less. Though I did get a laugh out of building the LHC, which maxes everyone's education, so the economy collapsed because everyone was immediately too good for their lovely burger flipping jobs and quit. I guess what I want is a city builder that's less sandboxy with more scenarios and more reactive elements.

I just finished Final Fantasy XV and the ending part after you leave the main land makes no sense. I didn't understand the reason or motivations behind any of the conflicts. I didn't understand the motivations for anything they did or how anyone got their information that they were supposed to do it.

I'm annoyed at the plot dumbness of the main character in inFamous:SS. I dunno what he'd expect talking to Lady Golem Hitler. He's learned time and again that she's ruthless and will either force Conduits to work for her, detain them in what I'm assuming is a Conduit ghetto, or straight up put them down. It really feels like I'm watching a SyFy movie and yelling at all the poor choices the characters make along the way.

Final Fantasy IX's plot is mostly straightforward except for the very final boss but that one can just be resolved by: "The final boss killed you, and since the final dungeon is a walk back through memories and time, you need to kill the personification of death as it enters the universe in order to come back to life." Everything else pretty much just is what it is. Final Fantasy XII's plot is straightforward mostly but suffers from the fact that the plot of the main villains is way more interesting than whatever the party gets up to, since it has a 'bad guy has a theoretically noble goal' plot that's a little more interesting than the standard version. Game timeline from the point of view of the villains: Occuria, as a group: "We control history by handing out WMDs to people we like, and that way we control them and they control the world. The parts of it we care about, anyway." Venat, an Occuria: "Hmm, I don't really like this. Hey Doctor Cid, you're a sciencey guy in a large empire. Here, let me teach you how to make your own WMDs. That way humankind won't be manipulated any more and you won't get dethroned just because the Occuria decided to hand WMDs to somebody else." Doctor Cid: "Neat! You're my new best buddy. Haha, cool, not only do these explode, but I can shove this in people's bodies to give them super-strength! Hey Emperor and Emperor's son Vayne, check this cool stuff out!" Emperor: "Cool. Let's start a war and give these a test drive. That'll let us expand our borders too." --It works, starting the events of FF12 and all the stuff from the player character side.-- Vayne Solidor, Emperor's Son: kills his dad."Hey, I have WMDs now. We don't need to be in a stalemate with that other Empire any more, we can just fight them directly! The nation of Dalmasca will be an absolute battlefield and get totally wrecked but eh, we only just conquered them anyway. Sucks to be them." The player side of the game has the party putzing around fighting the Empire and are about to be gifted WMDs before the main characters realise "hey wait, the villains are evil but maybe being gifted WMDs by immortal beings is actually bad" and destroying the source of WMDs before killing Vayne. It's a really badly paced plot. You would think the end of the game maybe should have a part after killing Vayne where maybe you should kill the Occuria but NOPE never happens. bewilderment has a new favorite as of 06:44 on May 3, 2017 |

Persona 5 (august): The ending to the fourth dungeon time limit is incredibly anticlimactic. I finished the whole dungeon in a day early on so there was a lot of buildup to the time limit, then it's just...over. Futaba randomly wakes up and stops hackers from destroying the economy in a matter of hours to no fanfare. For some reason, the prosecutor and detective continue to be angry that the phantom thieves stopped a disaster. Nothing changes. It was a letdown after the first two time limits had great conclusions, with public confessions from the targets.

To be fair the game is kind of doing that on purpose; the main character is hosed in the head for like 85% of the story and all, and you're hunting down an evil space parasite that fucks with people's perception of reality to the point people think it's a renegade super soldier instead. Which I can see why people don't like it or find it confusing, because it's not very well translated so even the parts that were originally simple are dumb, but it's pretty ballsy for a game to have you go through an hour long flashback sequence to explain why you're hunting down Sephiroth in vivid detail, only for it to be largely a lie 20 hours later.

Yeah bad stories and dumb dialogue is fine. It's a JRPG I'm not expecting much. Final Fantasy XV was on a different level. I seriously just didn't understand why they were saying anything they said. Why was Gladious mad? He kept alluding to Noctis not taking his responsibilities seriously or trying to shirk his duties but...he wasn't? He was doing all the things they were supposed to be doing. He got mad when Noctis wanted to stop in that city but then it turned out they had to go there anyway? Why did they waste an entire chapter of me getting a summon that I can sometimes use randomly, maybe? These questions and more eluded me Overall it was a fun game though.

Yeah, it does sort of struggle to fit itself into the narrative but it's less about the outside issues this time and more about Futaba wrestling with her own poo poo. Also the police oppose the phantom thieves because vigilante justice is generally frowned upon, and also because it makes them look bad

I'm not sure how that works since the "give us your weapons" convo seems to auto trigger on entering any casino but must be something I haven't found yet. Or just specialize in melee and suplex your way through the wasteland.

The core concept of Sunset Overdrive doesn't really work. It's a zombie shooty game where you're expected to be moving pretty quickly at all times, but trying to aim a gun while you're zipping around in midair is incredibly frustrating. Plus the music is awful oh my god.
