Finally finished The Apu Trilogy with watching Apur Sansar tonight. Absolutely brilliant films. There's really nothing to compare them to.

Also watched Kurosawa's Dreams last night. A bit of a departure from the earlier films of his I'm more accustomed to (I've been meaning to see Kagemusha and Ran), but quite lovely overall.

Kagemusha and Dreams have such drastically different endings. The final battle, well, slaughter actually, in Kagemusha feels just as apocalyptic as the nuclear winter in Dreams. Yet Dreams ends on an optimistic high. That was a very pretty funeral scene.

I'd also expect Kagemusha to be more of a standard narrative since Dreams is made up of eight segments.

I can't recommend the Blu-Ray for Dreams enough. It's easily one of the best transfers Criterion has put out so far. Looks like a brand new film. Also, the 2.0 surround track is unusually active. Pretty much the entire film has a richly textured ambience in the surrounds.

I'm hoping to start on Dekalog this week.

Can't wait for the summer sale for stalker and dreams.

What are some other high quality releases that'll be out for the summer sale that you would recommend as a general 'must have'? I haven't gotten anything since the November sale. Not sure what's coming up too.

Maybe tampopo? I'm trying to pick out 5 releases to grab during July.

My picks for best ones to get since the last B&N sale...

Blow-Up
Being There
Mildred Pierce
The Lodger
Ugetsu
Ghost World
Othello (if it's not held back further than July)

I'll likely be blind-buying Stalker, They Live By Night, and Straw Dogs.

Is Criterion planning some kind of Roger Corman set? Death Race, The Intruder, and one other movie are up on Filmstruck.

Did you try playing any of them? If a Criterion or Janus thing runs in front of them, that's a good sign that a physical release is coming.

The Intruder has never had a decent release. Corman is underrated since he made a lot of great films in the 60s.

To put it succinctly, Corman gave young unproven filmmakers a launching pad for their careers by hiring them for his low budget (usually)genre films. There hasn't really been an equivalent production company before or since that I can think of, someone can correct me on that if I'm wrong.

Sorry if this has been discussed recently but have they teased a Until the End of the World release recently? When I google it all I can find is Wenders saying it will be released at some point from 2-3 years ago.

Full Moon and Troma for sure, but they're both shells of what they used to be nowadays.

Looks like Filmstruck will be on Roku in the near future. I just got an e-mail about beta testing their app. Watch your mailbox if you ever gave them your info, they're offering 2 free months to test the app.

gently caress the Roku, give me my PS4 app. Why are they not catering to my extremely specific needs?

Seriously though on January 1st I didn't think I could live without access to Criterion streaming, now 5 months have gone by and they've forced me to learn that yes I can live without it. Shoulda had that app ready to go on day one man.
