I believe that the expense of united states Healthcare has inadvertently helped fund research into new medicine, equipment and techniques that have benefited the whole world and made Healthcare cheaper in parts of the world where research and development aren't financially feasible. I also believe that if anything bad ever happens to me I will never, ever escape my debt and I will die in the streets. I want real universal health care before my life is literally ended by a car crash or a cat scratch or plain bad luck or something.

I am grateful. There's hardly a better place in the world to go if you want cutting edge care, and there are a lot of things medicine can do for me here that would be difficult or even totally impossible in other parts of the world. But the extra funds our Healthcare model generates does put money toward R&D that the rest of the world can share in. Not all of the money goes there, obviously, there are pockets to be lined after all. I'll see if I can't find the article I read where some Canadian medical researcher was talking about the way America's Healthcare model makes Healthcare cheaper in other parts of the world. Now that's not an endorsement of our current system. Just a small silver lining. I would much rather see real universal Healthcare and increased federal funding for medical research, but as long as I'm wishing, I'd like a jet pack and a private island. UHC seems way more attainable, thankfully.

It's probably a good rule of thumb that institutions that deal with matters of life and death shouldn't be privatized and given a for-profit motive. Things like health care, fire departments, the police, armies... They tried private fire departments, but abandoned that idea when whole city blocks started burning down.

Not having any kind of savings or retirement plan setup because you believe that it should be handled by society as a whole for everyone is probably not the best idea. You can donate to and volunteer for socialist causes while also operating as a functional member of a society you think is inherently immoral, because the alternative is to generally be impoverished and even more powerless.

I was talking to this teacher friend of mine who calls herself a socialist and we were discussing how her union was going to strike because they were being forced to pay more of their healthcare costs. She was kind of at a loss for words when I asked her what she thought a socialist government would do to teachers who refused to teach because they were asked to contribute a larger portion of their personal wealth to the overall education budget.
