Socialism would be a good thing, but I don't see how we're ever going to get it with the population going up without cease. How do you feed all the impoverished? Cultivate more land? What about global warming? Do we just pack everybody in to the cities and leave all the arable land to be farmed? Trying to see too far ahead always depresses me. My only comfort is knowing that I could be wrong.

Current studies on birthrates are showing things should level out around 11 billion in 40 years or so. Meaning, that as countries develop birth rates drop off. Very rarely do I see people with more than 1 or two kids (if they even have kids).

phasmid posted:That's one of the more depressing things. Even if we have a surplus, we would have to keep producing it to feed those who couldn't produce their own. And without Socialism, people would rather let the surplus food rot than just give it away. Distribution is more of a problem when it comes to feeding starving people. Warlords and all that.

Either we'll have to regulate things ourselves or nature will do it for us and I can't tell which of those two would be ugliest. It's like when kids think that war is a fun adventure when it usually is only enjoyable for psychopaths. poisonpill posted:So you're suggesting the largest, richest, and most militarily-equipped nations should travel the world, forcibly developing countries for ideological purposes...? phasmid fucked around with this message at 20:03 on May 4, 2017 |

phasmid posted:What about urban centers in places like India? They're not really under the threat of warlords. It's just that they have too many people to feed. Distribution should be easy enough, shouldn't it? Unless there's some barrier like bureaucratic incompetence? i imagine the problem with that idea is that it's more cost effective to just give those countries the money you would have spent shipping the food to them. On top of that it is simply impossible to donate food to those countries without having local authorities taking it and selling it themselves.

Distribution should be easy enough, shouldn't it? Unless there's some barrier like bureaucratic incompetence? my dude there are many, many cities outside of famously corrupt failing states that manage to feed their residents, there are a lot of really cruel inherent inequities in our social order but starvation in the modern age is only the product of local governments failing to do their jobs at the most basic level. people fantasize about post-apocalyptic scenarios because they seek an escape from a thoroughly organized, comfortable, dull world where they are one cog in a machine with seven billion cogs into a romantic chaos where they are the self-sufficient king of the universe, and we no longer have a frontier one can dream of running away to. They do not do it because they legitimately believe the zombies will rise up and devour them any day now, or because some vaguely defined Malthusian crisis is any more inevitable now than when people were predicting it any day now in the 1800s. It's exactly because any kind of meaningful want or fear is so remote to modern first-world audiences that they seek it out as entertainment; when times are actually awful the trend goes to comforting fantasies where all the real and present discomforts in the audience's lives are abolished. The only sincere principle that united Caesar's assassins was "well this guy is getting too big for his red leather thigh high boots, lets shank him". They claimed to be out to restore republican government because it looked better than the truth, which was that their idea of republican government was synonymous with unrestrained self enrichment.
