I suspect the actual reason isn't "fantasy stuff is DUMB" but that an enemy who is capable of killing anything it looks at in a single glance would not be very fun in games, which is also why basilisks that show up elsewhere also tend to either be missing that ability or turn people to stone. They could not use a basilisk but when your entire gimmick is mythological creatures it's not surprising when you do.

Maybe not for the public at large but I distinctly remember a bit of weird goon praise of it, seemingly just for what it was trying to do.

Get mad at Dandelion, who probably wrote all of those and is also kind of a bellend.

The Witcher series in general does a better job of staying true to these mythological/folkloric creatures than most fantasy universes so I feel like maybe you're mad at the wrong game here.

Nah, Dandelion writes the quest logs, not the bestiary entries.

I have absolutely no attachment to the "correct" way to do any mythic creature, (although if you change every single aspect at some point I might wonder why you even named them after that thing) nor do I think The Witcher does a bad job with their creature designs or lore, but I do not like anyone who tries to say "this is the REAL version of this made-up thing, not like those fake ones". I said it was a pet peeve!

Like I said, their basilisks could breathe fire and fly (wait, I think they do fly?) and I wouldn't mind, I just used them as an example of a pattern that shows up a lot in the bestiary. It's especially bad for the vampire one.

i think it would kind of make sense for a vampire in a setting where vampires aren't repulsed by garlic and crosses to joke about people holding goofy myths about them that aren't even true in-universe, i don't think that's dumping on pop culture either as much as it is a character conveying world info. iirc the guy who's conveying it is just kind of a dude with a smart mouth

I guess the fact that it's in-universe is what makes it better for me. People have a bunch of stupid ideas in-universe about these monsters, but Witchers know better. The bestiary isn't saying "all you other pop culture things have it wrong," just "all these stupid non-Witchers don't know poo poo about monsters."

Yeah, I get it. I laugh whenever Geralt completely bullshits some idiot about monster/witcher lore when he spares a nice monster. "Oh yeah I convinced the imp to go back to the country to piss in milk, as is tradition."

I finished the first Dark Souls 3 DLC (and, unknowingly, a bit of the second DLC that I thought was a continuation of the first), and I liked it a lot! I don't know what the complaints about it might look like, aside that it's still just more Dark Souls?

I liked the new enemies: certain enemy types seemed to have some sort of tactical AI, and it was cool figuring it out. It's a snow level, of course, so it gets free points for looking amazing: even the rotten village full of pustules and screaming crow-men looked good. I guess the final boss is approaching parody at this point, by having three phases, but I beat them on my second try by selling out and summoning other players, no skin off my back.

Two bullshit moments do come to mind: walking across thin branches of a giant tree while being pelted with great arrows that explode, and those crow knight guys were a pain. Thankfully there's only like four of them.

So yeah, looking forward to playing the second DLC tonight or tomorrow!

Yeah the VA for Dandelion was always a really weird choice in Witcher 1 and 2 and in this game he sounds worse than ever. I'm glad young Dandelion at least got a new VA that actually sounds like his character should instead of like an elderly cowboy.

There's nothing skeevy in the game, if you're wondering. The reason behind the name is that the creator of the casino wanted to name it after the two most notable elements of gambling: it's unbearably alluring nature (sexy) and it's tendency to lead to ruin (brutale).

I have to give The Chinese Room credit, they may not make good games but their titles are stellar. In a world of meaningless one-word titles that make it impossible to tell apart a Prototype from an Infamous, A Machine For Pigs and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture are :krad:

Witcher doesn't hold a candle to Japanese RPGs playing a game of telephone with European mythology as filtered through D&D. Their kobolds are dogs.

Yeah Kobolds being little lizard dudes is pretty recent. I don't really know why the change was made. Maybe people felt bad about beating up doggies?

I always liked Zelda's weird humanoid beastmen. Instead of being orcs or ogres or trolls or whatever they're all pigmen, boar men, hyena men, etc. I guess Bulblins and Bokoblins are closer to the traditional medieval fantasy savage humanoids, but they still feel pretty distinct and fun.

To be more serious, even though I didn't overall care for the story, I thought Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles did some very interesting things with the fog robbing people of their memory so they forget what they're even trying to do, and the world is kind of caught in this terrible existence where no one really has a past. Like at one point a character murders his father because he forgot why he was seeking him out or who he was and let rumors about his dad as a dangerous warrior shape his perception of his quest, so he eventually believed he was trying to stop him.

yeah it's just too bad that crystal chronicles is the kind of game where you skip everything so you can get back to beating up monsters with your bros

like seriously, it's a very specific genre of game where you really don't want to put in story, or cutscenes, or really anything other than an extremely tenuous reason for why you're out punching progressively more powerful poo poo with your best friends
