The Sens are turning the puck over constantly from the pressure he creates on the forecheck. He's been looking really fast. The icing on the cake was the third period where he was cycling the puck down low in the offensive zone with Lindberg an entire shift.

yeah he's like, actually playing hockey now and seems to have learned how to skate a little bit, i guess the prospect of possibly never making it back to the nhl led him to study some tape or something. also maybe the fact that with the rangers' depth he's basically guaranteed to have decent players surrounding him

if he keeps playing like that i'm fine with him in the lineup. would still like to see buch in for one of the guys who's sagging (hayes for example i think had a better game last night but still is not impressing me lately, and i think vesey has played pretty well but could use a night off maybe) but i can't argue with a performance like that from anyone.

I feel like the Rangers could quietly make the finals. It's not like the Pens or Caps have been all that impressive and the former can't stop getting hurt. And if the Rangers did get that far they'd probably win too since they're better than any of the West teams left.

I want to be mad at this but Ovechkin has been garbage for much of the series so I can't really blame Trotz too much, though Burakovsky hasn't done anything either.

Better possession team I guess but the Rangers are more talented at scoring goals and have the better goalie which may or may not matter since Rinne is dominating.

Interestingly the Corsi ranks of the remaining teams look like this:

Washington: 4th
Nashville: 7th
Pittsburgh: 16th
Edmonton: 18th
Anaheim: 19th
Ottawa: 22nd
New York: 25th

Unless Washington finds a way to win 3 straight Nashville is your smart money Cup winner if you think it will hold like it has in the past and have the dominant possession team winning it all.

I mean it's still a tied series, let's not hand it to the Rangers yet. That said, I think if Karlsson can't come back and start playing like Karlsson of the first round the Sens are going to have a much much tougher hill to climb. He does so much for that team and the last two games has not looked himself. The no rest between games 4 and 5 probably helps the Rangers a lot here.

As for the Rangers beating the Pens...could happen but the Pens are good at exploiting a defense like the Rangers. The Rangers would have to be pushing the Pens to play defense a lot since their D isn't really all that good right now, and they'd have to actually capitalize on chances unlike the Caps have done. As for beating the Caps? I'm not convinced they'll rebound from 3-1 but if they do I think they're still a tough opponent to face and would have confidence from coming back.

Versus the western teams, the Preds look real good. They're playing that always skating always hustling balls out style of play that if you can sustain is super tough for any team to play against. Not realllly scared of any of the other teams but sure they're all capable of winning as well

The Rangers have some really talented forwards but so does Nashville. Maybe not quite as deep up front as the Rangers but I'd take Forsberg over any Ranger forward and probably Arvidsson too.

Also as mentioned the disparity on the blue line is staggering as well.

Considering he's also been probably their 7th or 8th best forward this series the move makes sense.

I'm really happy that an elimination game of the playoffs will be the first time Ovechkin and Eller have ever been on the same line. Trotz's unwillingness to experiment in the regular season was disappointing, considering I think Ovechkin only had like 1 or 2 even strength goals in his final 30 games so there was ample opportunity to mix things up.

edit: 1 even strength goal in his final 32 regular season games (but 2 in the playoffs so far)

the defense works well as long as they don't get pinned in their own zone. It's why the last two games against Ottawa have been lopsided in their favor, they've been good at quickly moving it out to transition and Ottawa hasn't been able to generate a cycle. Against a team that can reliably get a cycle going the Rangers D would be in a lot of trouble

You really think so? I feel like Ovechkin has been pretty good outside of game 4. He was quite good in games 1 and 2 at least.

I wish the Pens would take Hainsey out and put in Ruhwedel. Ruhwedel can skate well and might actually help spark a little bit of possession. But I can understand Sullivan saying gently caress it and just continuing on since the Pens keep pulling wins out of their rear end.

Yeah unfortunately I think he's been pretty bad this postseason. He has flashes and can shoot but he still has taken some dumb as poo poo penalties and he can't keep possession to save his life. Also he has become sooo slow. There's a reason why the Kuznetsov line has been good and it's because they're fast and can possess the puck. Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Oshie have to be amongst the slowest lines left in the postseason.

Honestly none of this really matters unless Holtby becomes a league average or better goalie again. Dude has let in at least 1 soft goal every game this postseason while Fleury has allowed 0 soft goals against the Caps by my count. If Holtby were above average the Caps might be up 3-1.

Here's my opinion about the Caps power play right now. First - the Caps do not adapt well when teams figure out how to cover their power play. The setup has been so successful over the years that they've turned into robots. Second - the puck is not sticking to Backstrom's stick the way it usually does. He's fumbling it a lot more than usual. Everyone is. Third - it seems like the Caps are winning no more than 25% of the board battles. Especially on the power play. Fourth - Shattenkirk sucks. Fifth - MAF is playing out of his head.

I think the direct answer to your question is probably mostly Shattenkirk sucking. I sincerely can't wait until he signs somewhere else. Seemed like a good idea to trade for him at the time so I don't really question the decision but holy poo poo he must have been sheltered in St Louis.

He can definitely be better but part of it is just the Pens being the Pens also. They're far and away the best team in the NHL at scoring goals. They hit 282 despite all the injuries. I mean if they were healthy they might have approached 300 GF.

I think it's often tough to trade for a guy and put him in as a significant part of your offense/gameplan at the trade deadline. Just hard to have enough time to gel with the team
