Ok, so. Mod post inbound. You didn't gently caress up, so this isn't anything bad. But I need your help. I'm going to be running a competition on the 28th regarding all three races, and I need a description of the Coke 600 (such as history, why it's important, etc) for the eventual thread OP. Best submission one will get featured in it (and perhaps some bonus points for it)! PM me, or if you don't have plat, quote this post with your submission. Thank you!

iospace posted:Ok, so. Mod post inbound. You didn't gently caress up, so this isn't anything bad. One of the most important stories regarding the 600 is that it was built by former (then current) driver Curtis Turner. They ran into issues in construction and the project went way over budget, money Turner didn't have. When the paving contractor said he wouldn't finish until he got his back payment, Turner pulled a shotgun on him and threatened to kill him. It's also one of the Grand Slam races in NASCAR, along with the Daytona 500, the spring Talladega race, and Darlington. Nowadays, 600 miles is just a long race, but at the beginnings of NASCAR, cars often couldn't complete 500 miles. The additional 100 miles essentially made this an endurance race, and winning it was probably the greatest achievement in NASCAR barring the Daytona 500 itself. Another fun fact is it's become part of the historic Memorial Day double, as drivers like John Andretti, Kurt Busch, Robbie Gordon and Tony Stewart have run both the Indy 500 and Coke 600 in the same day. Tony Stewart did it twice. In 1999 he finished 9th at Indy, and 4th at Charlotte. In 2001 he did it again, finishing 6th at Indy and leading some laps, missed the drivers meeting at Charlotte, started last, and still got 3rd. He's the only driver to have ever successfully completed all 1,100 miles. VikingSkull fucked around with this message at 01:22 on May 4, 2017 |

It's also one of the Grand Slam races in NASCAR, along with the Daytona 500, the spring Talladega race, and Darlington. In addition, the Winston Million (as it was known from 1985 to 1997) required drivers to win three of the four "Crown Jewel" races Viking alluded to in his post. Only two drivers succeeded, in the first and last years of the program: Jeff Gordon won the 600 as part of the three wins required (Daytona-Charlotte-Darlington), Bill Elliott did not (Daytona-Talladega-Darlington). Darrell Waltrip (1989) and Dale Jarrett (1996) won the Daytona 500 and Coke 600, but were unable to win Darlington to win the bonus. Davey Allison was the only driver other than Elliott with a chance to win the Winston Million with a win in the 600, but didn't; he didn't win Darlington, either. In 1998, the No Bull 5 program replaced the Winston Million, and the Brickyard 400 was added as a 5th Crown Jewel race: Jeff Burton (1999) and Mark Martin (2002) won $1M bonuses by winning the 600; Gordon probably would've done it in 2001 as he had a bad fast car which ran into Kenny Wallace on pit road early in the race.
