The friend of all children!

One thing I gotta say for this hobby, it's really intimidating and tough to understand from the outside looking in. If it weren't for Goons I'd never be able to learn anything about 40k. The Games Workshop website is *terrible* for trying to find information.

I heard that one of the big changes to the story in 40K is the return of the primarchs, and I heard some of the models are out or have been teased? I was hoping to get a look at some sweet primarch porn on the GW website but no dice. Can any goons give me a link to some of the upcoming primarch model images? Anyone want to give a crash summary on how they think this will affect the game?

Blood Raven Contemptor Dreadnought finally based and finished. :woop:
Surprisingly nice job even if I couldn't pose all that interestingly since I got it pre-assembled.

Finished painting it a couple of weeks ago and just been waiting to base it.
Decided to go with a glass wasteland instead of going with rocks. Had picked up a whole bunch of polished pieces of glass near the beach that I thought would've looked great.
Funny enough green pieces when applied to a base makes them look a bit like Tiberium Crystals.

Need to remember not to thin out the texture paint as much for next time. Had that happen to another test model.

Magnus and Guilliman are out and their models are available on the site. With the release of the Death Guard when 8th Edition hits there is strong speculation that Mortarion will return shortly.

Its kinda past speculation when we've seen the whole model.

So strange question, but did anyone else get significantly more for their Forgeworld Book in the amount of the voucher than they paid for it? I got a voucher for $70 for my IA3 despite only paying $54 for it. Not that I am complaining, of course.

Ah yes, forgot we got a shot of the scythe at the end of the teaser. I'm assuming the model will be the one we've seen leaked around but who knows.

Thanks a lot for this. I was able to search the site and get a look at the models. I figured they'd have popped up when I sorted to 'new releases' but no dice.

Thoughts from the last few pages:
- Primer should be applied by apraying light coats across your models, and if the model isn't totally covered that's completely okay. You can and should touch it up with the base color after priming. Krylon is my go to brand, Army Painter is expensive and needs to be used exactly as instructed but has some great colors; you shouldn't use it as primer though as it chips constantly. GW's primers are good but real pricey.
- Ultramarines own, anyone who thinks otherwise is dumb and bad
- Templars also own

A very important note on primer (or rattle cans in general) is to pay very close attention to the humidity outside. If you hit the dew point, when you spray the pressure change will cause condensation on the paint droplets as they land on the model and you will end up with a very rough texture.

I'm debating reversing the colors for the more offensive tanks (pred and vinny) and minimizing the blue on the whirlwind. Do you think altering the schemes would be a good look or would it be jarring?

I've been using dupli-color sandable primer as my primer. Is krylon better than that one? I noticed I usually need 2 coats of dupli-color for it to get an even full coat.

Or doing what my buddy did and stealing a canon chapter that has nothing written about it and only exists as a color scheme, a name, and a chapter symbol. In this case, the Harbingers:

I found a printable decal sheet for them btw. (if you get decal paper you can use a regular printer to print it out and have slide transfers) And no, I wasn't actively looking, I just found that Bolter and chainsaw had these, and decided to see what they had.

Alright, attempt number 2. I put together a snap fit Khornate dude from AoS, and grabbed an already built marine from the box I had and primed them both. This time, I made sure to keep the can pretty far away, and passed across the models, instead of doing direct spurts like before. IMO, they look a lot better. My camera is real lovely (my phone), but the details are totally visible, the Khornate dude has a lot of them, and they stand out wonderfully, and the on the marine you can even see the mold lines.

You shouldnt really be doing second coats with spray primers in my humble opinion. The point of primer is to creat a surface for paint to stick to. The resin in the areisal will attach to places the paint doesnt get sprayed, if there are small parts that didnt get hit with paint thats fine, paint will still stick to it. Primer should always be covered up as the finish on primer, even the best ones, will always be worse than the model paint you are using. Once a primer fully dries (normally between 48 hours and 2 weeks) you can really notice the difference and it will look weird in comparison to the other paint on the model. Also I recently learned you are supposed to add your first layer of paint before your primer fully sets for best results.

Hope that helps. But a swim in the simple green is the next step.

On a related note, is there demand for a painting basics video series?

I meant to say this the other day and forgot. Another important thing for getting your video around is keywords or whatever. Instead of just "Priming Models" throw in some "Warhammer" "40k" and "How to paint... " type stuff. I believe that still has an effect.

If this was a question for me, I'm not sure I'm into marines. I'd like a group with some psychic/magic options. I asked a few weeks ago in this thread and was told to look at Forgeworld Eldar or a particular flavor of Chaos Space marine.

40K is alive and well again at my FLGS now that they're moving forward with the story, but I'm sitting on the fence a while and seeing if it's Cool and Good.

How much magic do you need? If you want tons of magic/psychic there is Grey Knights or Thousand Sons, if you want a bit just get some marines with librarians and take whatever chapter you like except Black Templars.
