Corrin at least has the excuse of being extremely sheltered and growing up in one fortress for most of her life. gently caress Azura. She is the biggest offender in all three routes on "making things worse by not telling anyone important poo poo." and the mysterious invader land idiot ball is the worst part of this game. There's a familiar face to see you. When I heard that you'd gone missing, I couldn't think about anything else! I'm been tracking you down ever since, through the astral whosits! It wasn't easy, but I made it here and I want to fight! So Felicia joined up as Jakob did in Birthright. My current Jakob is actually equal or better than Felicia in every way, but then he's out of the party so that's a moot point. I still have that Flame Shuriken lying around and Tomebreaker is always good. Can't have Fire Emblem without a boat mission This is one of the weirder titles in context. I like soldiers that survive my murder attempts. Right, my daughter? Thank you, King Garon. To think you fell into the depths of the Bottomless Canyon... It must have been quite the ordeal. I am pleased to see you alive and well. Heh heh, welcome back, Sir Gunter. ... Soon Nohr and Hoshido will be engaged in an all-out war. Our army will set up base here in Cyrkensia and immediately send troops to Hoshido. If we catch them by surprise, we may be able to secure a win early on. Can you actually station troops in a neutral Kingdom and launch an attack from there? Then again, not a single thing is shown about the place so screw it. Corrine, I'm putting you in charge of the Hoshidan infiltration. ...As you wish, Father. Hmm...good girl. Go by sea rather than taking the overland route. The Hoshidans will expect us to go by land and may be waiting to ambush. We shall outsmart them at every turn. In the meantime, I will return to Castle Krakenburg. You want to share some of that magic technology that lets you do that? Might help. Iago, Hans, you two will come with me. Certainly, my king. Understood, King Garon. ... I have high hopes for you, my child. I shall do my best to bring back good news, Father. Before you depart, Lady Corrine, I must ask... Hm? Was I not clear? Then I shall repeat myself. I saw you follow Lady Azura into the night. Very suspicious, if you ask me. I shudder to even suggest it, but in times like these.. You weren't meeting with Hoshidan spies by any chance, were you? Corrine should pull an Ocelot and go "Maybe YOU'RE the spy!" Nothing of the sort. She and I just went for a little stroll in the moonlight. A stroll? You expect us to believe that? I do, as it is the truth. I was rattled after the attack on Father in Nestra. Azura suggested we walk through the forest to calm my nerves. While we were gone, we ran into a strange group of soldiers. Witness the first time Corrine is shown competence. What?! Y-you did? Corrine... As sharp as you are, surely you noticed the new blood stains on my armor. There's your proof. I'm not sure who they were, but they threatened the royal family. Wait a second, those invisible ghost things bleed? After all, rebellions are like seeds. We must salt the earth before they can sprout. ...Have I acted out of line? N-no, mimilady. You are a role model to us all... Thank you, Iago. Let that be the last time I hear you question my loyalty. Father, if you'll please excuse me. Go. *Some time later* Corrine... May I ask why you lied to Iago just then? What...THIS WAS YOUR PLAN Well, it wasn't a complete lie... They may have been monsters, but we DID vanquish strange soldiers that attacked us. I merely left out the details of where the actual fight took place. Ah, I see. So you said all that to gain King Garon's trust? Precisely. If we want our plan to succeed, it's imperative that Father trusts us. Winning the war won't matter if we can't convince him to sit on the throne. Azura, what the gently caress was your plan if this is new to you Hearing you speak like him so casually... It was unsettling. Oh wow, I must be a better actress than I thought. Sorry, but until this war is over, you'll have to get used to seeing me like that. I'll have to grow comfortable with that disguise, at least in front of Father. No matter how hard it is... Or how it tortures me. I suppose so... ...Remember when I said this plan is poorly thought out? *The next day* It is. Patience, Corrine. Ah, that reminds me. Iago gave me some extra funds for our war chest. He said he hoped it would prove useful. What?! He really gave us this much? I was also surprised. I'm not sure what's gotten into him. Money pinching Iago is a new thing But we'll take what we can get, I suppose. Too true. We should take this opportunity to stock up on supplies before we leave. Excellent idea. Hm? Corrine! Behind you! Huh?! No, not another port attack! I'm forever destined to fight him no matter what?! Your reflexes have vastly improved since last I surprise attacked you. Xander!! Oh wait no, he's just a prick I heard the Rainbow Sage granted you new strength. Congratulations. Yes...the Sage gave power...right.... Thanks, Xander! But sheesh, did you have to give me such a fright! We haven't seen each other in ages, yet the first thing you do is test my reflexes! I guess some people never change. By the way, what brings you here? The first thing I did after reporting back was come after you. If you're to infiltrate Hoshido, I'm going with you. It's not negotiable. Xander... Thank you! Having you on my side is like having a thousand extra soldiers. That is kind of you to say, if not a bit of an exaggeration. It took a little longer, but everyone is finally recruited for the most part. MILORD! I missed you so much! I made sure to keep Lady Corrine safe even though she didn't let me kill things! Well done, both of you. I am grateful for your efforts to protect my sister. Wow... Praise from the great Lord Xander. It's a little embarrassing! Heehee, I'm an expert at making baddies suffer, so it was a piece of cake! Now that Xander has joined us, the whole family is finally together again. That's a good point, Leo! It makes me so happy to be near all of my beloved siblings. Y-yes, that's right. Sorry, I don't wish to intrude on your reunion... Azura? Can it be...our kidnapped sister? I don't think Xander ever talked to Azura on Birthright, did he? You remember me? Of course. Though not as much as I would have liked, we met a handful of times. I especially remember how horribly the other Nohrians treated you back then... They did? But why? When they married, many Nohrians were still distraught over my mother's death. Those who loved Queen Katerina were not happy about Queen Arete or her daughter. Camilla and I...and later Leo...were told not to associate with Azura because of this. However, we always wished we could be close with her, as siblings should be. I can't tell you how happy I am to have you here with us Azura. Xander... Thank you. Your words have touched me deeply. You are truly as kind as Corrine made you out to be. This is wonderful. Now we can all be the big, happy family we were meant to be! YEAH MURDER TIME! SIEG NOHR SIEG NOHR! Elise, darling, we're not going to play. Make sure to behave yourself. It's true. We should all mentally prepare ourselves for the battle looming ahead. Traipsing into enemy territory isn't going to be easy. Worry not, Leo. No task is too great for the Nohrian royal siblings. Isn't that right, Corrine? Right, We'll find a way to win this war together. And I'll protect all of you... That's a promise. *Time passes on the ship* So far, so good. Yes, things are going quite smoothly. I hope it stays this way... Lord Xander! Lady Corrine! Pirates are aboard the ship. They're raiding our war chest! What?! Where did they come from? I'm sorry, milord, but they must have snuck aboard before we set sail. That's not possible. Unless...those are no ordinary pirates. Uh...yes, because stowadays apparently don't exist. Corrine, follow me. OK! So this map is a semi-timed battle. You start with 10k gold and it ticks down 300 gold every turn. How much gold you get is how fast you go. PSkill: Chivalry-When enemy’s HP is at maximum, damage +2 and damage received -2 during the battle Siegfried-E rank, 11 might, 80 hit, 5 avoid, 1-2 range, Critical Evade +10; Defence +4 while in possession What if Ragnell gave +4 defense. Being the complete opposite of Rajinto, it's still a good drat sword for someone as tanky as Xander. His speed is meh though, which means mages destroy him. He has an actual weakness unlike Ryoma. Man, Beruka's getting pretty screwed over on the Speed front. I mean, she's almost as slow as a Knight! Voting to ditch her because she's turning out pretty badly, Gunter for flat-out sucking, Azura because she kind of got overexposed on Birthright, Keaton because I ran out of bad units to vote off, and someone else I can't recall off-hand; probably Odin, though. Anyway, a belated character review for Gunter, because I never got around to it in Birthright. Gunter - Frankly, he sucks; he has the worst overall growths in the game bar none, and in the few stats where he isn't flat-out worst in category he's pretty close. I mean, when your Luck growth is only slightly better than ARTHUR, you've got a problem. Basically, the only reason he's even vaguely competitive is that the game gives him respectable bases in several stats... but the all-important Speed is NOT one of them, and worse: he has LITERALLY no innate growth for it (in fact, he is the ONLY unit in the game, possibly the entire SERIES, for which this is true). Literally his only use later on is to hide behind the Avatar to make them hit a bit better, and there're plenty of other units who can do that AND be viable units on their own on top of that. Actually, on double-checking, Gunter at best TIES for worst in every growth, with exactly ONE exception: Luck (yes, Arthur's luck is, indeed, THAT bad; Reina's not much better on that front, though, so Gunter is only THIRD worst in that growth). Frankly, I think you'd do better deploying generics than this guy... which brings to mind a potential challenge run: Gunter only, no stat boosters (though to make it actually possible, einherjar versions of Gunter would have to be permissible).

Maybe it's just the Fire Emblem-based forum RP I'm playing in right now (on a different site). The players have a bad habit of min-maxing (I'm probably playing the most "balanced" character of us, in the form of a Wyvern Rider who can attack and tank a bit; one of the other players took "party tank" to ridiculous extremes by sacrificing literally all offense for maximum durability- for the record, he's spent most of the game thus far as our primary healer), and the GM is responding in kind, so I've gotten used to seeing particularly low Speed values as grounds to dismiss a unit as non-viable. Of course, there're other factors in that, as well; I generally prefer dodging to tanking in games (especially when things scale enough that enemies can always damage me no matter how high I get my defense; any game with a minimum damage value over 0 counts here), and I like doubling enemies (with the understandable implication that I HATE getting doubled). Point is, as I previously stated in my review of Gunter, I consider Speed to be possibly the most important stat of the lot. TLDR: Stephen9001's got it about right; I am, as he put it, allergic to slow units.

I agree that Speed is the most important stat (until you're able to double), but it's worth noting that Fates gives a shitton of ways to fix low stats. If you wanted to fix that Beruka's speed, you can pair her up with a C Support Master Ninja Kaze or B support Bow Knight Niles to have them give her +5 Speed. Then +2 from a Speed Tonic, +2 from the Speedwing from the last chapter, and a possible +1 from a meal, and that shameful 11 Spd becomes a respectable 21. A Berserker Arthur or Charlotte support gives +3 instead of +5, but can boost her Str by 6 at a B support instead if she's lacking in that (which Tae's is, nearly -2 average Str ouch). A promotion to Wyvern Lord gives her another 2 Speed if she needs the boost to double, though I'd say it's a level or two too early for that. These boosts come at a cost (the Speedwing is a significant loss given how much other characters like Leo and Xander also love it) but if you like a character, or they offer something more exclusive like flight or movement, poor stats can be fixed (mostly, poor Benny is never doubling anything I suspect). Gunter is cool, he's got the bases to be useful in combat for a few chapters (Chapter 17 is a good one for him), and gets access to cool support skills like Shelter and Rally Defense fast, but most importantly he's the best pairup for Corrin, who often ends up being the best lategame unit. He always ended up getting a deployment slot when I played Conquest.

First thing to do is to promote Corrine to Nohr Noble. Now everyone except Elise is promoted, which is appropriate. Corrine can now use Tomes, a thing she will never use because she has the Levin Sword. Also, she wears less armor now because...I dunno, Camilla? Azura and Keaton are the notables out. I will never use a Dancer in Conquest again, will I Somebody is clearly leading the charge. If we take down the leader, the rest will fall. Agreed, but I can't figure out who it is. They're all acting in unison. Then perhaps... Their leader is not among them. Hm? They are? Since when? I just played Birthright, where did you see that? Their leader must be masquerading as a Nohrian soldier, giving orders on the sly. That means we'll have to speak to each of our soldiers directly to smoke him out. Let's move quickly. The longer this skirmish takes, the more we stand to lose. So I already mentioned it, but 300 gold will be stolen each turn until you beat the boss. No, you don't get the gold back because...reasons. Talking to all four green soldiers will reveal the boss, and he will always be the last one you talked to. There's two Adventurers here that don't move and have status Staves. The top one has Freeze, the bottom one has Enfeeble. The Enfeeble is way worse because -4 stats is devasting to anyone that approaches the right side of the ship. That's why the solution is to just have Xander laser beam into oblivion. You don't care that he's now stuck forever from the Freeze because nothing physical can touch him. Corrine follows her big brother's act and takes the northeast side. With Selena's support, she's fast enough to double all the outlaws. Here's the set-up to counterkilla bunch of enemies. Leo with Odin's pair-up will take on the mages on the north. Effie with Peri support and Elise's PSkill will snipe out the archers on the southeast. Niles with Beruka's defensive boost and Camilla's PSkill will snipe that northwestern mage. Niles still takes a lot of damage despite his high resistance. This job would normally fall to Jakob since he would have Tomebreaker at this point. Leo spams the Tree button. Man, he's still taking damage despite his high resistance+Odin's RES boost. Mages do not gently caress around. You'd think I would stop facing Dark Mages on the Conquest route but nope. A roll that jumps into a flip that ends with a rising uppercut slash? Man, and I thought Corrin as a Hoshido Noble was too much. Effie's probably the most reliant on RNG with a worrisome hit rate. Her defense is also not exactly spectacular for someone that will get doubled by everything. Keep in mind that one of the Outlaws did 5x2 damage AFTER Peri's defense boost and Elise's PSKill. There's a reason why Xander is soloing the southeast. And that's because a ton of these mercs have special weapons like Armorslayer and Wyrmslayer, so Corrine and Effie can't really venture on their own. Charlotte blasts a Fighter to death after Laslow assists with poison. Missing strength is a bit annoying considering it's 75%. Beruka cleans up the other Fighter while Odin sets up a counterkill with full guard meter. Selena chucks her sword at a Hero and picks up a free Heart Seal. There's a countdown every end of turn on how much money you have remaining to gain. No wonder she's always tired after each battle. Effie eliminates the one Armorslayer merc to safely take on the rest of them. Charlotte goes bananas on that poor Dark Mage. You are like -3 in expected strength, Beruka. You are the opposite of getting stronger. It's great how Odin and Leo work well together. Slinging spells at saps all day. Your co-worker would disagree. These Zerkers are really annoying in Conquest despite having no tricks besides being big HP and strong. Also, did you just miss strength again?! Peri's PSkill kicks in after her first kill, letting her double the other merc on the enemy's phase. Effie gains a level off guarding Peri and...goddamnit, again?! Why is Selena the only one gaining strength? Thank you, Peri This is probably the hardest part of the map. All those mages and Sorcerer deal obscene amount of damage, and that Fighter pair-up has Seal Defense. Odin hitting hard isn't the problem, it's getting doubled at this point. And his resistance isn't good enough to suddenly be a magic tank. This Adventurer has a Shining Bow, but not any real threat since he doesn't move. Niles tests out his new Shining Bow and gets a good kill off despite his paltry magic stat. Unfortunately it will stay paltry because Niles does not gain offensive stats. Femme Fatale clean up with some swift kills. 27 damage off Nosferatu though, good god. That's what two resistance will get ya. That +4 SPD off her PSkill is such a difference maker, because that makes her one of the very few characters on the team that has 20+ speed. ...The hell are these stats? If you somehow missed the memo, KEEP HER AWAY FROM MAGIC Wha—?! Why are you pulling on my cheeks? OW OW OW! Please stop! You'll bruise my gorgeous face! Did you think I was an enemy in disguise? Never! I'm a Nohrian through and through! Are we done here? I feel a little abused. My god, this Sorcerer is kicking my rear end. They give you a Tomebreaker party member for a reason. Um, do I have something in my teeth? I suppose I did eat not too long ago... Huh?! You need to inspect my face? Erm. OK. V-very well. That was...strange. If you're finished, I shall return to my post! The image of Beruka awkwardly patting a soldier's face is amusing. DIE Niles picks up a Master Seal from its corpse. Am I wearing...a disguise? Not a chance! Test me all you want. My face and my Nohrian pride are both the real deal. If you're satisfied, please allow me to return to the task at hand. Huh? You wish to inspect my face? I'm sorry—I can't allow that. I'm not hiding anything, I just... Hey, stop that! Unhand me, you fiends! I guess I have no choice... The hell, Shura?? Wait...that's a Nohrian pirate! But he leads his men just like ninja... And how did a common pirate manage to sneak aboard? This doesn't add up. I'll get to the bottom of this later. For now, all that matters is stopping him! I think the bigger question is how 30 people took over your entire ship without your notice. Shura is a very, very annoying enemy to deal with if you're not a ranged attacker. He starts out with the Mini-Bow AND he has Counter. Say good-bye to your men, your war chest, and this ship! No unique dialogue for this mission either. Weird. Eh, let's whittle him down with Xander's support attack Oh. Huh. Tae fucked around with this message at 23:06 on May 7, 2017 |

Bruceski posted:Forget Xander, it's his HORSE that's doing wonderful things in that crit. What, did you say, to that horse. Also, holy poo poo what dark god have you sacrificed to for Charlotte to gain that much defense? Is that where her strength growth went? Beruka seems to be in the same camp, but put res in the place of defense.

AradoBalanga posted:I've come to notice that whoever was in charge of combat animation choreography for Fates really likes three things: rolling, spinning, and crazy flips. And I love every minute of his/her work because it shows that effort was put into Fates' development, while helping both weapons and especially classes have their own unique touch. The special animation for Lethality (the one where the screen goes completely red and both the attacker and defender are rendered as silhouettes) is stylish as hell, and I crack a grin every time I see it. I don't usually play with animations on, but I might for SoV because the past couple of games have had such good battle animations.
