The most successful movies in the world these days are fanfiction unless you're somehow going to pretend like different writers/artists creating their own interpretation of characters wildly different from the originals isn't fanfiction because a major company purchased the IP and said they could.

Ubisoft has shown they've run out of all creativity and really don't give a gently caress. Assassin's Creed is like the anti-open-world game. Huge open world, but you can't ever do poo poo but exactly what they tell you to do. I miss AC1 when it was actually a game about assassinating, and not a movie about leonardo da vinci and george washington.

Lurdiak posted:The overwhelming success of fan art vs original art, especially sexy fan art, is just part of how modern society is a capitalist nightmare where people just want to consume their favorite brands in as many ways as possible. The delineation between "canonical work" and "fan work" is a product of the capitalist nightmare too, though. Everything is still as derivative as it always has been, the only difference with capitalism is that you change the names of all the characters a little so you don't get sued.

Prey is just BioShock fanfic, it is literally the same process that led to Fifty Shades of Grey if you think about it

I like when headcanon goes viral and becomes real canon. In my opinion, when you're working on an IP, the closer you can get to a kind of distant collaboration with fans the better.

I dunno which Illiad/Odyssey fanfic I like the most. It's either the Aeneid, the Greek campaign in Age of Mythology, or the one where Achilles and Patroclus work in a coffee shop together.

Grapplejack posted:I mean mostly in the sense that you spend a majority of the early game preparing for a conflict, only in this case if you get ganked or outplayed your game is over and you have to restart in a new game. If you don't like that aspect then you should jump into popular spots first thing and have silly fights with players who are about as ill-equipped as you.

I'm late to the SMT4 chat, but just at people who say the beginning difficulty is "bad design". The fist-in-the-face welcome is just a sobering reminder to learn to roll with the punches quickly and to know the battle system ASAP. If that's not your jam, fine: The game does have an easy mode, but that's only unlocked when you've died several times, and to top it off, the game will taunt you for it. This game knows its audience. If you want to talk about "bad design", the overworld map would've been a more appropriate topic. Personally, I've invested around 100 hours into it until I burned out. There's just so much stuff in the game. But I'm probably quite near the end, so I should finish it one day - so I can start up SMT4:Apocalypse, the sequel. I have too many JRPGs in my backlog.

Steven Moffat posted some stuff on Usenet in the 90s suggesting that humans got the word "Doctor" (meaning someone who helps) from the main character in Doctor Who. 15 or so years afterwards the show is back and he's in charge, and the idea gets a mention in one of his episodes. Geoff Johns (one of the guys in charge of DC's stuff) wrote a letter in the 90s detailing how two characters were linked. He was told that it wasn't the case, but years later he was in a position to change that and make his idea canon.

Dragon Quest Heroes II makes me wish that Dragon's Dogma let me control pawns directly. They're not at all the same kind of game, but being able to just seamlessly swap between party members, sometimes with cool hand-off bonuses, is really fun and I like it a lot.

I've been playing way too much Streets of Rogue lately. For a pixelart indie early access game with procgen elements, I'm really enjoying it and hope the next world gets added soon. In the meantime, I've started cranking up the difficulty using the mutators for laughs. Turns out it's really hard to progress in a game where everyone hates you in particular and has a Rocket Launcher?
