Connecticutian here. I definitely want to get more involved, but I also have to admit that I've honestly been feeling a little bit at a loss for what else I can do to help make an impact living in a solidly blue region of the country. My senators and representative (Blumenthal, Murphy, and Himes) aren't the kind of people who need to be swayed with constituent pressure; they're always pretty outspoken against the administration and its policies, so when I do contact one of their offices every now and then, all I can really do is provide words of support and encouragement on stances that they've usually already taken pretty vocally.

Anyone, especially any blue state residents, have any suggestions for how I can get off my rear end and start helping out some more?

I'm not in the US, but have you considered issue-specific groups? ACLU, Black Cross and other legal groups usually need people to welcome folks out of jail and set up meetings and stuff like that. Local antifa, food/homeless groups or copwatch are always good options, too.

Yeah, if the national seems to be in good shape, look local. I live in one of the bluest parts of the bluest states (San Francisco) but still the amount of bullshit that is done locally gives activists plenty to do. And even if you're more interested in national politics, getting better state government is key to ensuring a future for leftism in the US... the Right has been playing this game while the Democrats ignored it for at least a decade now and it's why we're where we're at nationally.

As you know, the 2016 presidential race in Michigan was very close. What you may not know is that voting machine issues and irregularities in the city of Detroit may have disenfranchised as much as a third of the city's overwhelmingly Democratic voters.

quote:

He blamed the discrepancies on the city’s decade-old voting machines, saying 87 optical scanners broke on Election Day. Many jammed when voters fed ballots into scanners, which can result in erroneous vote counts if ballots are inserted multiple times. Poll workers are supposed to adjust counters to reflect a single vote but in many cases failed to do so, causing the discrepancies, Baxter said....

Republican President-elect Donald Trump won Michigan by a razor-thin margin, 10,704 votes. Presumably, Clinton’s best opportunity to eliminate that margin rested in finding uncounted ballots in Wayne County, which she carried by a 2-1 ratio.

Disqualifying huge numbers of precincts would make it “almost impossible” for the former New York senator to make up the votes, said Ernest Johnson, a Democratic political activist who worked to get out the vote for Clinton.

“It’s a real long-shot now because, if I were looking for 10,000 votes, the first place I’d look is Wayne County,” Johnson said. “That’s a huge problem. ... But if anything good comes of this it brings up this problem (with voting machines) that needs to be corrected.”

$100K bill for Genesee Co.

Besides Wayne, Clinton carried Oakland, Washtenaw, Genesee, Ingham, Kalamazoo, Marquette and Muskegon counties.

None had nearly as many problems as Wayne. But at least 13 of 222 precincts in Genesee County are not balanced. More than half of those were in heavily Democratic Flint, according to county canvassing reports. The election was still certified by its board of canvassers.

“The trouble is there’s too much leniency with the board of canvassers,” said John Gleason, Genesee County’s clerk. “They’re not as stringent as need to be because they think it won’t affect the outcome of the election.”

Now City Clerk is up for election (the person that handles voting machines and training poll workers etc) and Garlin Gilchrist II is running for it.

Throw him some money, its a three-way race and the incumbent is currently leading though with a huge percentage of undecideds. You can also hear Garlin speak at this link.

My local DSA and some other socialist groups are organizing a planning meeting this week, presumably to figure out a counterprotest. I'm afraid there will be violence, as the nazis have a facebook even for it where they're apparently trying to provoke antifa groups into attacking them, but I can't ignore nazis any more. Beforehand, go to the planning meeting. Decide what your appetite for risk is. Make sure that you are in some kind of a group communication thread with your comrades, preferably something like Signal. Have the telephone number for your local branch of the national lawyer's guild written somewhere on your body.

On site, be aware of what factions are at play. Typically at those kinds of events, on their side there's going to be the overt fascists/nazis, some less radical but still pretty dangerous nationalists (note whether they're waving US flags or dressed up like nazis), and then the police, who in my experience tend to do a lot more protection of the fascists. On your side, there is going to be a smaller contingent of black bloc types (with the face masks and the black clothes, usually anarchist or of other ultraleft persuasion) and a larger body of less radical protestors, including people from the DSA and other orgs you mentioned in addition to sympathetic left-liberals of varying degrees.

The overt fascists and the black bloc will typically be at the front lines of the conflict, and it's highly probable you will see exchanges of blows. Depending on how quick and heated the frontline conflict gets will determine when the police intervene. It sounds like your appetite for risk is lower, so you will probably want to be more in the outer perimeter. But keep your eyes open, and be aware of what is happening around you, on all sides. Coordinate with comrades to make sure that key observations are communicated. Be aware of where street medics are, they will typically have red crosses taped on themselves or their bags. They will typically have the means to treat pepper spray (from both cops and belligerents) and lacerations.

The key determining factor in the dynamic will be the relative sizes of the general fascist and antifascist contingents. Accordingly, if you are going to take part in this, go all in and try to bring as many people as you can to this. And remember what's at stake. This action will not make the fascists go away, but it will show the people they wish to oppress that there are those who can stand with them in solidarity. And it can serve to undermine the morale of the fascist tendencies.

Oh, and if you want to do a lower risk but productive action to support the antifascist action, consider recording the proceedings. Just remember to bring a spare external battery if you are using your phone, as that eats through charge right quick. Also, remember that you can walk away at any time.

Search "Boston free speech march" on facebook to find their event page. They seem to have deleted some of the nazi stuff but still have posts talking about trying to get Richard Spencer to come. No idea if there's a separate site where they're organizing, but I kind of infer that there is.

A "politically diverse" group with a picture of a helmet that says "Right Wing Safety Squad" as their banner. Sounds about right. Group page is equally as annoying, with such amazingly useless thought experiments like "What if Antifascists are the real nazis" :psyduck:

As a Massachusetts native I'd be up for going to a counter-protest if one exists. Spreading intolerance is one of the biggest abuses of free speech that I can think of. Unfortunately I'm absolute garbage at signs because the only thing I can think of as a counterpoint would be "The right to free speech does not include the right to be taken seriously" from Hubert H. Humphrey but I don't think that applies.

EDIT:

That actually doesn't make me feel too bad, since I went to the Tax Day Rally in Boston and there was anywhere from 2 to 3 times as many people as this freedom march or whatever is theoretically pulling.

If you do this be mindful that some antifa orgs will ask you not to record or photograph them, particularly if they're in black bloc, and you should do your best to respect that -- they're there for your protection too, after all.

A couple of other things of note.

It never hurts to bring water and snacks, even if you aren't planning on being out there too long.

Wear comfortable clothing, and shoes that you are comfortable standing, walking, or running in.

Effective leftism ho!

I worked on the Tommy Pope campaign for the primary in South Carolina's special election. TP was a moderate as far as republicans went. I'm practical and only volunteered because my district doesn't vote democrat enough to matter. Sadly he seems to have lost and unless he somehow finds a few hundred votes in his back pocket the primary has been won by Ralph Norman who is a full throated Trump supporter.

So now unable to help moderate the election I've switched to Archie Parnell's side. Sadly the name recognition isn't there, but since RN is a full throated Trump supporter he'll probably suffer. Mulvaney won this district by 20 points but Trump being a fuckup and the election being just less than a month away gives me a sliver of hope that it's doable. Especially since Newt Gingrich's old district wasn't the 35 point blowout it normally is but was only won by single digits.

So I'll be knocking on doors in the evenings and this coming weekend. Maybe make some magic happen. I'm walking anyway to lose weight. Might as well lose weight while talking to voters.
