the average person absolutely has an android phone since they dont give a gently caress and iphones are expensive

in sweden the iphone 7 is $800, a moto g5 is $225. you have to, unsurprisingly, be someone who actually cares about ones ~devices~ to go spending that sort of cash

maybe i have an autistic anroid-trained brain, but when i pick up an iphone i have no idea how to use it. the interface is not intuitive at all. someone will be driving and be like 'can you grab my phone and text beth we're on the way' and i'll end up deleting an email instead.

that said, im pissed as heck about google phones. i got a nexus 5x, and it got bricked by the reboot-loop issue just after the warranty period. so i got a pixel. it's less than 6mo and the audio system is completely hosed. microphone doesn't work, speaker doesn't work, headphones don't work unless they're bluetooth. its completely useless as a phone. my friends are like "just bring it back to the store. oh wait lol owned". i have to mail it back and wait for a new one (if they even have any) like its fuckin 2002.

if it's any consolation, none of us knew how to use ios after 7.0 and probably still don't

i kinda hope for a new interface after the disaster, but i don't see anyone competent at apple who can pull it off

i've never used an iphone for more than like 5 minutes and whenever i pick one up the lack of a constant back button and app switcher really confuses me.

i usually eventually figure out that the back button is on the screen somewhere but having to go back to the home screen to switch apps just breaks my mental model of what i'm doing i guess.

i'm sure there is another way to do it but it's not discoverable cause i haven't come across it yet

This is why every Android phone ships with 3 different messaging, email, phone calling, app stores, etc. So people eventually stumble upon what they need

i fuckin hate having like 20 different communications channels on my phone

like sometimes i'll be talking to someone on text message and need to send them a video or something, so i'll switch to hangouts, and they'll respond in that channel "oh that reminds me of this instagram post on that topic" and they'll send it to me in an instagram DM and the conversation continues there, until the send me a private IG link and i go "i can't open that" and they're like "i'll email it to u" but then it can't send cause it's too big so "let me host it on google drive" and then i try to open that link and it opens in google+ app for some loving reason and then redirects to youtube and then they go "oh and here's a tweet about that" aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

honestly everyone trying to carve out the messaging space for themselves ends up pretty hostile. I guess what I'm saying is globalise/nationalise e2e encrypted messaging now.

you shouldn't need to be told how to use a device. the use should be apparent from the design.

if the design necessitates any form of "tutorial", it has failed as a design.

that's the ideal, certainly, but it's not always achievable. you do your best to make the operation intuitive and you provide instructions to back that up.

the problem is when people confuse "intuitive" (e.g. modern touchscreen scrolling, which maps directly to the behavior of objects in the physical world) with "buttonless" or "gestural". swiping in from the edge is not an intuitive behavior unless something just visibly disappeared there and you want to get it back. doing a three-finger tap is not intuitive at all for anything -- that behavior has to be learned. if you have to train someone how to do a secret hidden gesture to trigger a function that could be a visible, identifiable button, you failed.

one of my favorite real intuitive gestural controls is google's "shake phone to submit bug report" feature. that's inspired.

both aynroid and apple phones are factory set-up with a handful of large eye-catching buttons for a UI just add more until your home screen is visually equivalent to a typical windows desktop where every app, folder and document has a shortcut in triplicate

everything beyond that is tech-genius stuff to most people

that reminds me of when i tried to import photos into a relative's windows rt tablet and i went into the photo app and couldn't get out for the longest time because the only button on the device was power, i think.

then i remembered (or maybe i googled it on my phone?) that windows 8 has that godawful swipe ui, so i swiped from the right to reveal the "charms bar" that has the windows button.

Still better than android clock

i'm still amazed that you can hand an ipad to a three year old who gives less of a gently caress about your $1200 than she does about your deferential attitude to parenting and she'll have bubble guppies on there in ten minutes, maybe fifteen if you don't have a netflix account. she'll just push all the buttons with no fear of breaking the thing and when she's done she'll know what they all do

that to me is a sign that you've won the ui wars
