I know there's a mil-history thread and I would never want this thread de-railed to destruction,. but the random diversions of history and other subjects is quite interesting. I have a half dozen books now due to this and the military history and Roman history threads. Shattered Sword and everyone who reads this thread should own it. That last bit about the Spanish Civil war I had no idea happened.

Half the fun of milthreads are the stories and the statistics. :)

And Paul Preston concludes in his book about the Spanish civil war that Franco was very eager to enter the war.

I've really changed my mind, but like the other guy's sentiment, 'local grudges' is definitely underselling 38,000+ deaths.

Do you agree with Preston?

There were a lot of wrongly killed people, that's for sure, but I think there was organized and systematic killing only on one side. The sources I've just checked in wikipedia speak of 200k on the nationalist side and 50k on the Republican side. I don't think the killings after the war are counted in those, but that's a differente exercise, since, depending who came out on top if the Republic had won, the numer could be comparable or not.

With this I answer Bozart, now that I check. Obviously I am not claiming that the second Spanish republic was perfect in any way, but I do think there's a qualitative difference of intent, on top of the quantitative one.

What exactly about Paul Preston ? If he has one big assertion I don't know it.

VVVVVV I've read Preston's biography and I think he makes a convincing case, so yes I am inclined to believe it, if only to counter the "He kept us out of the war and thus was good" narrative that the heirs of that regime spew often. But if I am to be honest, what do I really know?

And obviously what happened in Republican territory wasn't all about discipline, all the more so with the Communist Party murdering their side and creating an entire civil war inside the civil war because... well because power and its tunnel vision I guess.

Oh, I'm not argueing the scale, just that the Red Terror wasn't entirely about discipline.
Wikipedia's more reliable sources put it about 50k as you say for the Reds and 150-400k for the Whites (and some here have offered a number of strong sources that it was towards the higher end), with the majority happening after the war.

About Preston I was wondering about the seemingly controversial assertion that Franco wanted to join the world war. From what I've read on the topic it seems a majority of historians think he wanted to stay out.

I agree except for when we stray deep into warcrimes chat and especially when we get into the really gross "who did worse wracrimes" debate. That debate might be worth having, but I find it really depressing and not a fun intermission between updates for a fun LP of a computer game.

I get reports of contact, then nothing else. This was reported as some AK's, so I sallied a battleship and some destroyers that were protecting troops landing here.

Dammit, they sent in fighter support.

That long ranged CAP I set up seemingly months ago finally bags something.

I think the AI heard that crack about never seeing their fighters....

Grey getting those newer airframes into production will be the key to defending his shipping lanes into 44. The Allies put 5 new carriers in the water this year along with 7 CVEs minus the one he sank. While Allied CAP pilots are never going to be as good because of how many died at Milne Bay, Grey doesn't get new CVs until late next year. Long and short is that Grey cannot afford to lose any CVE or CV and having not outdated airframes will go a long way in that regard.

Hell, he's about midway through phasing out the A6M2 Zero, and while its easy to mass produce A6M3s, Allied fighters are already on par with that fighter and will soon surpass it with the widespread introduction of the F6F and non lovely spitfire variants in mid-1944.

I can't switch the upgrade path for any squadrons - I'm not sure if its bug or not, but I go to the upgrade page, click on change upgrade path and it always switches back to the default.

I'm beginning to wonder when my luck is going to catch up with me!

More dead allied troops!

We return in the afternoon to finish the job.

With the exception of that CVE, any Allied CVs are safely stashed in places where Grey can't get at them.

So, does WitP simulate how absolutely awful units from The Reformed Government (aka the Japanese puppet government in China) were? They couldn't go toe to toe with Communist Partisans, I don't want to know how they'll perform vs actually trained Allied troops.

Yep. I don't know the specific because this game can be super esoteric, but (in the early-mid war at least) the Allies are pretty much required to have no more than 2 carriers per TG. The Japanese have different rules iirc.

The penalty is just a coordination penalty, so that your strikes arrive in many parts instead of a cohesive strike.

However, it's often worth it to take the coordination penalty and operate your carriers in one TF anyway, the penalty doesn't apply to your CAP and the coordination penalty is chance based, which means that you can still sometimes get a good result in 42 despite the penalty.

I think that the CAP draws from all carriers even if they're in different TFs as long as they're in the same hex.

Tankers come in all sizes in this game an just get the designation TK. Looking at the combat screen, the Santa Maria is larger than the DDs torpedoing it, and almost as large as the BB. And then there's the other TK, Isis, which looks like a converted AK.

There are converted cargo ships that specialize in oil transport and there are specialized oil transport ships; visual cues and oil capacity (hidden 3 menus deep) or victory points (hidden 3 different menus deep) is how to tell them apart.

I'm joking. Somewhat.
