Scott Aukerman uses the same mysterious "Stop down" expression that the Hollywood Handbook boys say at 18:05 of this week's Comedy Bang Bang. I swear to god this phrase doesn't exist as an expression outside of Earwolf Studios and it's driving me crazy.

It's a thing in photography, not sure about directing.

In 50 years in Sketch Comedy College, if there's any justice in the world, will have a section on the fad progression of sketch comedy in the 2000s from tim and eric's deliberately ugly and obtuse style where the punchline is frequently how unpleasant or amateur looking a shot is, to it's inversion in Key and Peele, where glossy, high quality scenes are the norm but again, the punch line is often that a stupid thing is being done very well. Then the professor will begin the second class with the section on season two of the birthday boys, which will cover the other three months of class time. Since it's probably the greatest sketch show of all time.

I love birthday boys but I can never think of a good sketch to send someone I think would be interested...so much of the appeal is in the vibe each episode builds

"book guy", "Woosh" and "Keeping the beat" are my favorite out of context sketches, though I think all are from season 1.

Ham Hat from Funny or Die is also great.

Even though it's a movie trailer parody and so specific, I feel like Pooljumpers is a good litmus test. It's not like the rest of their sketches are aiming for a mainstream audience.

This is the key to the birthday boys... in their old funny or die stuff and the description of every sketch I've ever heard (and also the ones I saw live cough cough) they take a thin premise and just lean into it so so hard and dont even really heighten just keep hitting that note nonstop like a clear bell.

Sounds like every Mike Hanford appearance on a podcast, so that checks out.

Noticed that the "Shows" tab was looking a little sparse today. Katie Couric is no longer on Earwolf, and if you type in the old show URL it redirects to a standalone (Stitcher-branded) site. Meanwhile Denzel Washington has ended studio episodes and will only return for live stuff, and that Hamilton show has, shockingly, already run out of steam. The most recent episode description says they're going on a "break," but it has also been removed from the thumbnail list.

Also those Sharpies that Engineer Cody took a leak on are sold out.

How Did This Get Made swaps around which episodes are available through the paywall as a loophole to get around it. Mabe CBB did something similar with some promo on a forum/website somewhere.

Sean bringing up "Ricky and Ronny trying to do Peripheral Vision Man as a sitcom" made me realize just how badly I want to hear an entire episode of Hollywood Handbook talking about Studio 60. They would undoubtedly treat it with the reverence it deserves as the most pure and accurate depiction of showbiz and comedy writing ever made.

What was Besser referencing when Brett replied "No comment"? Sklars leaving Earwolf? Auckerman? Besser getting a new show? Or did he leak something early and we don't know yet?

e: Reading that the Sklars have a new Feral show, so it's likely them.

disturbingly functional

The Sklar brothers' new show has been out for a whike, it's called Dumb People Town. It's basically what Sklarbro County was on Earwolf. The show's pretty good, I recommend checking it out. The recent episode with Jon Hamm might be a good one to start with.
