I like this idea of playoff do-overs. I bet team owners would be into it too, think of all the extra ticket sales they could make!

Really, though, if the Blues PP was even half-way competent against Nashville, the series is still going probably.

if you like behind the scenes stuff and can bear to see lots of penguins logos, @RealDanaHeinze is a good twitter follow. he's the penguins equipment manager and he posts pictures of literally everything he can think of - locker rooms at all the arenas he visits, back hallways, equipment work benches, laundry rooms, whatever. there is nothing too mundane to not eventually be photographed and posted on twitter by him. there's obviously a lot of penguins focus but he'll get pictures from as many places as he has access to in visiting arenas too

He definitely used to be but I don't think so anymore. Ever since he started his new website or whatever he's become more and more of a Toronto homer, which is totally fine - that's his audience, but I unfollowed because I got sick of it.

Yeah at this point I like his feed because he's retweeting his good website writers (like dellow's comeback) so it's made me seriously consider getting a subscription just to read dellow articles. Sorta the same thing with Eliotte Friedman. He used to put good stuff out but ever since he's had his brain infected by HNIC/Sportsnet it's not been as frequent.

Thanks for this. I've been away from the league all year so I don't know who the new faces / who got snatched up. It's funny because based on Tyler Dellow, some NHL GMs have secret twitter accounts that just follow hockey stat nerds but they would never admit publically to putting value in fancystats.

He was pretty ineffective, particularly against Nashville. I wish the narrative would switch from "Wow what a warrior this guy is" to "What a selfish teammate" since a number of healthy scratches would've been able to contribute more.

The Blues losing is such bullshit, first of all we all know that Nashville is the cheapest and dirtiest team in hockey and it was clear that the refs were in on the take, all you have to do is look at how many penalties they gave the Blues arrogantly because they knew Nashville couldn't score except on a Power Play but that was pretty stupid, just compare the cities: St Louis is more than twice the size of Nashville and has lots more hockey fans so how is that a good marketing plan, NHL, and St Louis is also way richer than Nashville so good luck on not having that money watching your playoffs for the rest of the year.

I'm a fan of both Blues and Preds, but objectively just lol if you think the Blues are a better team. You could argue equal, but def not better. Factor in that one team gets hit, one team cold, and that makes the difference. But watching most of the series, the Blues didn't play well enough where "they were robbed" or "deserved to win."

I know teams have a couple of assistant coaches to run the D, forwards, and goalies, but do any teams employ someone exclusively for the PP or PK? Usually it's delegated to an existing coach, but if neither of those coaches are any good at PP or PK, what's stopping a team from hiring a dude to focus specifically on special teams?

Most of the dumb trade proposals on HFboards are probably from the GM's themselves.

I believe this is the case on the Coyotes? They fired a couple of people a few weeks ago and I think someone was exclusively the PP guy.

Nothing I guess but it's usually the case that you want your coaches to be on the bench with the team in case in game adjustments need to be made. Harder to do that I suppose if your PP coach is sitting in the stands/locker/whereever.

Originally the Pens just had Jaques Martin watching games from above I think before they brought him behind the bench so it's not completely unheard of. I can't remember if Martin even ran anything specifically at the time though. I think he was more of a special advisor at that point who didn't coach any one thing but gave the coaching staff input on what he was seeing.

At least Atlanta were backed into a corner a bit with him almost certainly leaving as a free agent in the summer. Mike Keenan traded Roberto Luongo for 7 games of Todd Bertuzzi, one season of Alex Auld and Bryan Allen because he was a bit mad about how contract negotiations had gone. That one still probably takes the cake for lopsided deals.

I remember reading a defense of the trade from some schmo on the internet, because according to this schmo, the Bruins wouldn't have won the Cup with Thornton. This trade freed them from his contract, and they were able to sign Chara the next offseason.

He was two months into a brand new 3 year contract signed by the same GM that traded him. He even started the year really well with Boston. I have no idea why that trade was made then or now.

Yeah, newell brown.

Same thing with football and basketball, I think the offensive-minded head coach gets the most attention, but you can look at who draws up the plays on the whiteboard during a timeout, and it's not so rare that it's a guy other than the head coach.

It's repeated a lot, and not just by internet folks.

They saved like 1.5 million per year, which even in 2006 terms was pretty meaningless. They had a fair chunk of cap space regardless and you imagine it would more likely result in them not signing Savard as opposed to Chara. And of course they could've just traded him for a real return and gotten the same effect.

I remember when I saw Ice Guardians (Kelly Chase's documentary on fighting and enforcers in modern hockey: it's on iTunes and it's pretty drat good) that a couple players interviewed said that when they went over to play in Europe they saw more guys taking runs at better players, the rationale being "eh, it's only a 5+game and I'm a bottom-six player anyway, so if I can get one of their top guys out of the way it's a net plus", whereas here in North America they'd have to pay the piper.

Supposedly every team except Anaheim has them in some capacity or another. It's worth nothing that some of the companies/people hired by certain teams have been questionable at best and some of the fancy and micro stats some teams seem to be into might have limited usefulness.

I met the guy who Montreal fired (or didn't renew his contract or whatever) last off-season and I think he's probably really smart and I totally can see why he would get fired because I don't think he had a filter.

The big takeaway for me from that analytics conference is that the biggest barrier to fancy stats being more widely accepted is going to be the people doing the work. They're either too focused on the numbers or too academic.

If you're real smart though, Sportlogiq was using the conference as a recruiting pitch. They are hiring right now and they made that super clear.

e: here's the Sun writeup about the conference: http://www.torontosun.com//2017/05/08/what-we-learned-at-the-ottawa-hockey-analytics-conference

They recorded everything but sadly I don't see it online.
