Claiming people only like old games because of nostalgia is stupid. Maybe some people don't want a game that takes a lot of "skill" or "finesse" to play and would rather actually have fun games, even if the graphics suck.

I've said it before but nowadays games are either some stupid ultra-competitive thing trying to cash in on the "esports" fad while it lasts, or a single player game with great graphics but lovely plot and gameplay. If you look at the progression from Morrowind to Skyrim you clearly see the graphics quality going up about as fast as they stripped everything away that made Morrowind so fun. Or San Andreas -> GTA4/5 - same deal, better graphics and more realism but none of the parts that made SA so great. So yeah, there is a little nostalgia for when they actually made good+fun games, but that's hardly the only reason. The fact that they are more fun than modern games is what makes me keep playing them.

I totally agree with a lot of these points, Morrowind had a lot of things I loved (you could even go further back into Daggerfall which had some insanely awesome customization options shredded in the name of graphics) including a really unique, non-generic Fantasy setting that they'd NEVER have the balls to do again.

However, I will speak in defense of GTA5, it was a big step in the right direction back towards San Andreas, and GTA Online has continually gotten sillier and sillier content that brought back many of San Andreas concepts. GTA4 was the one that took itself too seriously. The character of Trevor was pretty much a direct response to "why does this Niko guy act all sympathetic in cutscenes, then run 20 people down on a sidewalk?"

On the flipside, GTA4 taking itself so seriously is why we got Saints Row 3 & 4 being complete balls to the wall parodies. Unpopular opinion: Stop crying over them not being like Saints Row 2 and I hope they never, ever go back to trying to complete with GTA seriously again. They are some of the best comedy games out there.

the n64 controller was weird if you assumed you would need the D-pad.

but you didn't ever need the loving d-pad EVER. left hand on the middle grip, right on right.

95% of games called for this. You would sometimes need to move over tot he D-pad for some classic game collections and things but any title including goldeneye you had one excellent grip that's all you needed.

the worst part of that controller was the blisters you'd get on your thumb from playing too long.

I'm saying that 2.5D shooters are not fun because they lack meaningful game mechanics beyond "move, jump, and click". No aim, no thinking, nothing. "shoot" guys, find the key, and keep exploring or open the next door and finish the level. I found that boring when it was brand new, and nothing about it has become better with age.

I don't like modern shooters either. Overly cinematic vapid trash. There was a sweet spot in the late 90s and early 00s where things were good. Unreal Tournament, counter-strike, half-life 1/2, the original Call Of Duty, perfect dark, Tribes 1 and 2, and maybe some others im comitting a mortal sin by forgetting but the genre started out as hot garbage horse poo poo that was notable for being controversial and that's it.

If you liked it that's fine, but if you still like it, it's nostalgia, and you cannot escape that, sorry. wolf 3d, doom, and quake are straight up loving bad games by modern standards, or the standards of 15 years ago.

1. While Witcher 3 is a great game, Witcher 2 is better because it's a "tighter" experience, the in-game choices have more of an impact, and the plot has no "save the world" elements.
2. Overwatch is a fun game to play, but the character design, lore, and the community that has grown up around it are cringey and awful.
3. Most open world games are full of meaningless filler and would be better off as more linear experiences.

I impulse bought this awhile ago and haven't played it yet because I post about games more than I play them but hey, it exists. I have no idea if its good or not. I should get on that.

In fairness to Overwatch, this is now true of like 99% of video games. Everyone agrees Breath of the Wild is a drat good game, but I'd consider destroying it if it would get rid of the people who are obsessed with the love between Link and a 12-foot-tall fishman.

Morrowind is the only example I can think of that did it right. You can find some pretty cool stuff in Morrowind aimlessly wandering around through caves, whereas in the later ones all the caves are just templates and 99% of the time there's nothing worth getting in there. Also the non-story quests can actually be fun. I never actually completed the main story of morrowind despite playing close to 1000 hours and I still have fun playing it.

If you were into 2D fighters the Saturn was the best console until around the release of the Dreamcast, which was the best until the PS2 came out. That's a pretty narrow criterion, though. Also, you had to speak Japanese for a Saturn to be worth owning otherwise.

The Genesis came out almost two years before the SNES.

My uncle had a Saturn and yeah, those, Mr. Bones and Daytona USA were the only games of note.

I ended up buying one years later (console only, no cords) for $3.99 at a thrift store and ended up selling it back to a local retro game store for not much more :(

I'm curious as to on what technical level you conclude this at?

Don't get me wrong, I think the hatred for it was massively overstated and you can tell that most of it was rage at the game not living up to some stupid idealization (very obvious once you see how it's all thinly veiled by a focus on a single feature that literally nobody was talking about pre-release), but it hasn't pushed procedural technology any futher, and it doesn't truthfully do anything impressive with already established technology.

I was actually being sarcastic but to play devil's advocate:

I agree. While I was being slightly hyperbolic, I do feel that No Man's Sky managed to make a space game that was enjoyable and very large. Given what happened to creature generation in Spore, I think NMS was able to do something more manageable. After the updates, the terrain and atmosphere variances are pretty good. When compared to other mainstream space games like ED and Star Citizen, which isn't even near to being released yet.

MNS managed to make something I'd been waiting for my whole life; a game where I could just roam around and chill. All I had to do was get enough gems and minerals to keep my ship running. If I wanted to gently caress off to the other side of infinity, I could do it. There weren't any bothersome side quest/main quest notifications, just me and my creaky ship.
