That's actually a pretty good article, but I'm disappointed he didn't mention/dig into those horrible "dismembered nude women as props/weapons" mods. I feel that would be a lot harder for someone to brush off as "oh it's just harmless fantasy".

This isn't awful or awesome in the usual sense for this thread, but it was weird enough to make me smile, so here you go: I also recommend the page itself since it uses six different fonts in different colours over eight lines of text, all but two of which are center aligned. The mod is also 18+ for some reason, when it seems to just be a small field of 10mm boxes.

Oh god, I watched the video. There are mod settings for duration of the menstrual cycle and trimester length. Not only that, but there also a separate armor mod that scales for the change in size (maternity armors?) It's shocking how much effort went into this. It might actually be sort of interesting if were some kind of educational simulation instead of being attached to a game where you shout at dragons.

Awful/Awesome Mods: It's shocking how much effort went into this

Remember when modding was "Hey guys, play the specialists, it's loving awesome you guys" and "lemme get this nicer AK model someone made that someone put on FPSbanana without the original creator's consent" or "Holy poo poo, I didn't have to pay for Natural Selection, this game is so well made now that it works"? Was it the FakeFactory mods? The one that was like 5 gigs, with "refined" textures and Alyx getting a completely different model with skimpier clothes every version? Where did it all go wrong? Was that where it went all wrong?

# ? May 10, 2017 07:04 |

is Fake Factory the one where Alyx had a fully modeled vagina interior because the model is literally ripped from a porn game or something? also there were fuckin' plants everywhere for some reason. Like, way too many

I'm pretty sure people were making nude mods for the original Tomb Raider - you know, when she had triangular boobs. It's always been like this, the only difference is how easy it is to find now.

What used to be mods are now games, that's what's changed. You don't need a publisher to make a game anymore. You don't need a distributor. You don't need a marketing team. You might never be huge if you don't have those things, but a lot of small teams gamble on making enough to get by, and some games really do blow up and become Big Deals without any of that stuff. People who made serious mods in the past make games now because the SDKs for Unreal, Unity, Cryengine, and more are just free to download and use. Your example of Natural Selection is perfect. Why bother making an NS2 mod when you can make an NS2 game instead? So the people who are left are people who tinker instead of engineer, and you get texture replacements and the like, mostly.

People who made serious mods in the past make games now because the SDKs for Unreal, Unity, Cryengine, and more are just free to download and use. It also seems harder to make full-on total conversion mods now. A lot of games either don't allow modding or have modding frameworks that only allow parts of the game to be changed. Foo example, if you look at Valves games, HL2 came out with a SDK that allowed you to make changes to or rewrite most of the game logic. Their newer games only have tools to make maps or change out assets.

I mean the reason we see so many mods for the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games is that they have an incredibly flexible modding framework, not because they have an especially dedicated fanbase (they do, but not more than any other popular series). So really it's just that the popular modding platform has shifted because it just happens that the easiest thing to mod these days is an RPG rather than an FPS.

You mean the Cinematic Mod for Half Life 2. And yes, it did feature a fully modeled vagina for Alyx, a LOT more detailed than most of the ones for other games are. Yeah, I don't blame them for that because rating systems like that don't work so well (although ^ ^ ^ you're right, the boss definitely tried to defend it in the most rear end way possible), but without means to do bug reports or gently remind people that hey don't creep it's not actually going to encourage a healthy community and mod ecosystem. And the site culture is basically opposed to interoperability and prosocial (or at least not creepy) behavior. So yeah, Tasteful Dickpic posted:The Nexus is like imgur. Yeah I'm not really against only having an Endorse button. I just find it hilarious that "They'll troll mod authors with well-reasoned and coherent opinions about why their mods only deserve 4 out of 5 stars!" was apparently the reason for implementing it.

I only go there these days from links from this thread, but it seems like every time I do, I get "Hey you downloaded this more realistic weather mod for Skyrim in 2012, please endorse it before going to your content". Seems like if I didn't endorse it then (and it was half a decade, two children and a career change ago, gently caress no I don't remember it) then I'm not going to now.
