...Harpo's ain't one. What are the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and/or Canadian Championship? These two competitions are the tournaments to determine the best club, regardless of level of play, in their respective country. What this really means is any team, regardless of how good they are, can win a trophy. What's so important about these competitions? Other than the trophy, the winners of these competitions get access to the CONCACAF Champions League, where they will proceed to lose to a Mexican team in depressing fashion. However, due to the new format of the CCL taking effect, winning one of these this year might not get you in. It's all wacky! Who gets to play? All professional teams are eligible for the competitions unless they are a USL reserve squad (I'm looking at you, los Dos); amateur and semi-pro teams must qualify to make the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. There are no amateur or semi-pro teams in the Canadian Championship. How do the competitions work? Canada: 5 teams USA: 99 teams Canada: Home-and-home with away goals rule USA: Knockout Canada: Play-in round (Edmonton vs. Ottawa) Semi-finals (Play-in round winner vs. Toronto, Montreal vs. Vancouver) Finals USA: First Round (Amateur and semi-pro teams enter) Second Round (USL and NASL teams enter) Third Round Fourth Round (MLS teams enter) Four Rounds afterwards Also to note is that, until the Fifth Round, teams are grouped together based on location - after that, a standard bracket is used. Are these games televised? Canada: Yes, on TSN and RDS USA: No. Some matches will probably be streamed online, and the final will be on ESPN2 (probably). When does this start? Well, the Canadians have already kicked off, but the Open Cup begins on May 9th with clubs that you, yes you, could join if you wanted to! So take a 3-hour drive to Bumfuck, Florida to see a potential giant-killer in person!

I'm on my way to the University of Mary Washington to witness the mighty Fredericksburg FC play...somebody. I don't honestly care, it's competitive football and my hometown made it into the competition for the second year running. Just making it an extra round can keep these little baby teams solvent. I'm hoping for a more entertaining affair than last year's nil-draw PK loss. But really, it's a stupidly nice day out. 70 and blue skies. Go find your nearby tiny rear end team and have fun.

Going to Derby City Rovers v. Tartan Devils Oak Avalon tonight. A pretty great draw because it means either a Louisville team will be moving on to (probably) Indy or a series of hilarious Open Cup welps will happen and the pride of the Greater Pittsburgh Soccer League will go instead.

I am mad because I am refereeing two games tonight instead of watching local Open Cup soccer. I'll have to wait until next week. OSA / Sounders U23s tonight, Reno vs the winners next week. Both games are in the Seattle Metro. Which amateur team will topple an MLS side this year? Who knows!

doubleposting because Sixteen Year Old Alphonso Davies (now officially his name until November) ran riot in the first half of the VAN-MTL semi with a goal and an assist in a half where the Caps could and should have scored more, then Vancouver decided to Vancouver HARD and give up an away goal, concede a penalty (which was saved) and give up a ton of sitters that Montreal just couldn't finish. 2-1 going back to Montreal. In conclusion, soccer is a game of two halves (and if you didn't catch this particular game of two halves then you missed the gently caress out son.)
