To be fair they then nerfed Falstad for 18 patches in a row. He's probably the most nerfed hero in HotS.

I toggle the camera lock frequently when playing as Gall. With the camera lock on, Cho's movements throw off my accuracy pretty hard.

The map: Hanamura The sitrep: Our core is at 2 health, with a 2-shot payload waiting for the enemy team thanks to Azmofat. Their core is at a comfortable 4 health, with no payloads on our side at all. Things are looking dire, maybe even impossible; after all, you can't come back on Hanamura. The come back on Hanamura: Somehow, we managed to stall them for a full five minutes while we gradually plunked away at their tier 1 forts, got a 3-shot payload, waited for both of OUR payloads to spawn, team wiped them, and won the game with a 3 level lead. Perhaps everyone was just playing the map wrong the whole time :bwsilly:

Gustav posted:Merc camps are grossly underestimated in general. Not in the games I've been in. I constantly see teams throw objectives, give up lanes entirely, or waste 30 seconds of the other team being down 3+ dudes to merc. You're right they can be a great for keeping pressure in multiple lanes or forcing the other team to make hard choices about whether to give free damage on structures or come to a teamfight as 4v5. The reason you see a lot of good goons say "ignore mercs, focus on lane/objective" is because it's hard for a lot of players to gauge when to merc and which camps are useful at which times, and when you'd need to escort the mercs or when they're good wrecking stuff on their own. Since it's easy to gently caress that up, focusing on the basics works. Few games are lost because you didn't merc if you were doing something else useful. I started playing this horrible game with goons since I could get a bunch of dudes right off the bat; so far I really enjoy Tychus because he is a bad boy with a minigun that can attack on the move. How do I not be a complete detriment to my team? What the hell is run-and-gun used for besides making the enemy Tracer spend an extra dash to run you down? Also what is the most efficient strategy for making that goddamn enemy Tracer do the chaingun cha-cha?

Tracer usually has to make mistakes for Tychus to punish. You can bully her out of a lane since she needs to get close (just like you) but she's a lot more mobile. Tychus's niche is being really tough to kill and shredding low mobility high HP dudes.

The top 7 for the Reddit one honestly is spot on: Battlefield of Eternity, Cursed Hollow, Dragon Shire, Infernal Shrines, Sky Temple, Tomb of the Spider Queen, Towers of Doom. All are three-lane maps (except Battlefield) with a ton of skirmishing over the objective, and the objective is binary. The other maps are either huuuuuuge, sloooooow, PVE-oriented, or have objectives that apply for both teams at the same time.

Tychus strategy against trace is "eat poo poo" The guy is a tank shredder. Click on the fat guy walking into your team and melt him for needing to stay in your range to do his job. Q is for finishing off people or harassing other assassins to take some pressure off yourself. Once you get +range and damage late game it's a great squishy killer. I like In The Rhythm. Just get stacks as you can and then you'll have like 5 seconds of tank be gone. Don't save his D just get that damage up in there. Prioritize people who have to fight you in your own range, preferably when they are bogged down by your team. If the enemy team is a lot of assassins it will be rough. Ult is preference but I like laser because it let's me minigun still.

Yeah I like the compact maps way way better than the hulking monstrosities that are Garden of Terror and Warhead Junction. Being huge works for Cursed Hollow, though. Probably because of the double boss and because it encourages push strats.

I like having a rotation of varied maps where different characters & builds, strategies, and mechanics change the flow of the game. I think the "both teams can have an objective up" works as a comeback mechanic which is one of the strengths of HoTs. A team that was losing still being a risk if they can get a terror around level 20 keeps the game interesting, rather than just falling into "Well, we won 10 minutes ago, the match just won't end for another 10" trap of other MOBAs. Part of the problem with the universally reviled maps is they feel like there's little interaction and the objective just tends to lead to a snowballing (pre-rework Mines, Blackheart's Bay). New Mines feels kinda 'meh', but the original version and some of the bandaids they threw on it was just terrible. For those of you that didn't play back then: The golems stayed in one lane and rose up where they died, making it very hard to recover after losing the first golem. Since even if yours was stronger later on, you had to dedicate more resources to defending. This was also back when characters had less balance in terms of strength at different levels and many were squishier at low levels. Their worst bandaid for it was to cap the first golem's strength. So even if you got all of the skulls your golem was only as strong as if you'd gotten just about half. IIRC it was 45/100. What was particularly lovely about this is the game didn't have any sort of indicator of that cap, which created a bullshit system mastery hidden mechanic. Where a team that didn't read the patchnotes would waste time collecting 20+ extra skulls for nothing, or two good teams would specifically NOT engage each other over the first objective to hurry up and go soak. edit: Airspace posted:I like Blackheart's Bay. Yeah Blackheart's has a great theme and fun announcer, but the map is just too big for the specific mechanic. I agree with the usual goon wisdom of just compacting it a bit, like removing the bottom (or top lane and adding the boss to bot) would go a long way towards making it a better map. I think Towers of Doom really is a better iteration of what they were trying to do with Blackheart. Coolness Averted fucked around with this message at 21:08 on May 10, 2017 |

Garden of Terror is a fun and good map in QM. People don't seem to understand the objective or how to use the terror or anything about the map, though, and it's a kind of crap competitive map. Infernal Shrines, Spider Queen, Dragon Shire are three of my favorites personally. Braxis doesn't seem that bad either if I'm being honest, although the rotations through mid are unbelievably awkward.
