phys was about as strong as it always is (outside of no yoshitsune, anyway) in P3. but in the original version of the game a whole bunch of stuff means that magic has legit reasons why you'd want to use it that don't really exist in the other games you mention, not the least of which being that the ultimate end game strat is "cast 9999 damage spell 1-2 times, victory cry, repeat"

My complaints were pretty much terrible balance, no morality bar so you need a guide to get the only sensible (read: neutral) ending and some demon designs being incredibly lovely and incongruent with the rest of the designs.

However, I did love the general atmosphere and the press turn system so if there's a general sense of improvement it sounds worth checking out.

The designs were made more... not sure of the word, tight? More cohesive? It's still not Kaneko designs, but it all feels like it came from the same artist. They dropped Minotaur for some reason though :saddowns:

Can't comment on balance, I'm the type of rear end in a top hat who bought the grinding DLCs and more or less broke the game in half. That said there's some really neat challenge DLCs that expect you to be super high level with a hand crafted demon team, which is neat.

The endings largely come down to making specific choices at specific moments that are super obvious, like in P5. There is a sort of morality mechanic, but it only comes into play if you pick a side that goes against how you've played your character up to that point. Vague endgame spoilers: If you act like a prick all game and pick the "power of friendship" ending, then all your demons get deleted (you keep your compendium though). If you act like a power of friendship shonen action hero all game, and then pick the "gently caress EVERYTHING" ending you lose all your items, which is way harsher.

Dating the teacher seems kinda iffy to me, not for the usual reasons but because it would feel kind of like blackmail? We all know letting the object of your affection inject mystery chemicals into you so she'll sell you prescription painkillers is the real foundation of a healthy relationship.

Dating the teacher seems kinda loving awesome to me, for the usual reasons because she's a wonderful human being and the best. We all know that letting Kawakami be the object of your affection inject mystery chemicals like LOVE and AFFECTION into you so that you will be really successful in life by having the entire night to yourself is the foundation of a healthy relationship in addition to having Takemi's superviagra coursing your veins for fun time.

I thought the only true foundation of a healthy relationship was fake dating an alcoholic so she could lie to her boss that she was skipping work to gently caress a minor.

Or maybe it was buying into an MLM so you could be taken for a ride by a nihilist.

Dating the teacher IS definitely hosed up. Even worse because of the power dynamic since she's YOUR teacher.

Literally the only thing that makes it work in the context of the game is that, you, the player, have total agency over the situation with 100% guaranteed no long-term consequences. You're also helping her out of a situation where she's being taken advantage of because of her jobs

the entire reason it is a taboo and illegal in most of the world is that you cannot have a consensual relationship with a minor who you have power over.

its bad. Especially when the game opens with a villain who is trying to bang his students.

I'd definitely argue that Kawakami's on much better ethical grounds than Kamoshida because she's not coercing anybody into sleeping with her.

That said, yeah, it's definitely weird. It's more weird that she wants to date Joker than the other way around, admittedly, but it's definitely weird. The thing I keep thinking about is that if Joker was female and Kawakami was male, even if you change nothing else about their relationship dynamics, people would probably find it a lot more uncomfortable. It just makes me think of this South Park scene.

The game does try pretty hard to even the power dynamic out between them over the course of the confidant scenes, especially with how much Joker knows about her and how much he does to help her, though I have no idea if that makes it better or not.

I never got a sense she wanted to date Joker other than she had to work at the maid service. Also, everyone wants to date Joker including the main villain and it doesn't excuse the terrible writing for that situation. Age gap and unequal power dynamics are topics I dislike regardless of gender because of the potential for abuse.

I mean, if you take the romance route, she definitely falls for Joker. But also, true, everyone wants to date Joker.

You're right about the age gap/power dynamic stuff--I was just pointing out that more people would see what's weird about the situation if the genders were reversed.

I should clarify that I don't really mind that it's in the game. It's like one of the few times you really can just say "gently caress society's rules" so it's thematically appropriate, if nothing else, and Kawakami is a good character so hey

I don't care if you date the teacher but people jumping through hoops to make it "actually morally normal and good" are being dumb, just admit you like the hot 4 teacher crap without acting like it isn't taboo for a very justifiable reason. And on the other side it's silly to apply real world logic to it since it's a cartoon video game which is not trying to accurately represent real life.
