That's not great, but it seems to be a pretty common failing to want to include a thousand different weapons that aren't really that different, doesn't surprise me that a campaign-style game falls into the trap as well. How is the gameplay overall? I wasn't super excited that it's a 1d10 format, I would really rather people use a 2dX format so that you actually have some sort of distribution to work with and things aren't so swingy.

Is the experience system any good?

Haven't been able to play it yet, just reading through when I can. The XP system is slow and I wish it was a pooled system. It actually seems like buying more experienced members with higher stats until you hit the limit is a much better way of doing things. This could be intentional to limit snowballing via XP, but it does place more emphasis on being lucky selling loot. In that I'd say it's actually worse since the opponent has no say in the matter. You're better off using XP for traits than straight stat boosts.

I kind of wonder if some of these companies shouldn't have a cap on their Kickstarter goals. Like once it hits a certain value it's locked in as "funded", people are charged, and it's treated as if the timer ran out. I know Mantic has attempted to control Kickstarters by limiting everyone to only pledging for a core box with whatever stretch goals are unlocked, but every other Kickstarter lets people add on tons of extras and pick and choose the composition of their order and when you're dealing with product valued in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and you're a ten man team it's going to be a disaster.

Seems like they should hire a manager ahead of time who can evaluate their team and processes and say, "This is what we can reasonably handle on the timeline we're projecting," and kill the Kickstarter when it gets to that threshold.

The folks who made 2 booms and a room had a pretty decent kickstar model like this for the expansion. They'd finished developing the product, had no milestones or stretchgoals it was just "Yo, we need funding to actually produce this. Kickstart to get it a little earlier than retail, oh and you can also buy in a bundle at a discount."

Slugfest -while still sticking to the worst parts of kickstart excess/bloat also started throwing in reduced packaging KS purchases as a cool idea. So you can buy it a bit cheaper/save everyone some money but it's not quite as much of direct competition with future retail.

edit: Also was the making GBS threads up in the dead thread just folks from the gw threads saying 'heh how do YOU like it when I derail your thread?!?!" or has the environment actually changed in the past few months and it's actually considered good and cool to discuss poo poo games being bad and their publishers terrible in their threads? Last I checked folks hated it and just wanted to discuss builds, the meta, and share pictures of painted minis.

Depends on the thread. If you went into the Mantic thread and said how terrible they were, the posters there would reply, "Yes, and?" But you might not get that reception in the Specialist Games thread. Usually when a discussion goes on too long they say, "Take it to the Death Thread," or something.

Pretty much, unless you start wailing about how everything is bad forever based on a single stat in a single statline of a preview that's missing any rules context.

If people were honest, they'd earnestly discuss that. Even if it isn't going away, it's easy to poo poo on it for being terrible and everyone should do it. We shitpost about how terrible resource variance and the mana system is all the time in the MTG thread. We talk about how other games have improved upon it in the past two decades, including Garfield himself.

It looks like Palladium have canceled their Rifts miniature board game Kickstarter after only a couple of days. I thought for sure if they struggled onward they could hit their $100,000 goal. They were only $33,000~ shy. But my guess is that like a lot of Kickstarters they low-balled what they needed and were planning on making up the difference in the "stretch goals". In any case, they promised to take some of the suggestions of their backers on board, retool, and come back stronger!

Of course, most of those suggestions were to finish releasing the rewards for the Robotech miniature game, but he didn't consider those to be genuine backers because they had only pledged a few dollars.

Ideally the real lesson learned here is that people aren't willing to write a blank check to Kevin Siembieda.

So on balance, it would appear that 8th Ed. 40k isn't a total poo poo-show and might be worth playing (albeit with miniatures from our collections and/or eBay) ?

All this talk of it has got me thinking of my old space marines and playing a 2nd-ed size game (that is , 2-3 squads, a character, a vehicle). I could of course just bust out the 2nd Ed. or RT rules, but in the interest of open mindedness...

*hurk*

Our club started playing a lot of Beyond the Gates of Antares. Warlord is still in the process of making models for their entire range, but so far it is a cool and good game. If you want to play a sci-fi skirmish game I recommend it highly.

Our resident 30k player rages about Antares because rules questions get answered by the writer on Facebook (usually quite rapidly) in between FAQ releases. Somehow this is bad.

Is the experience system any good?

In the one game I played, things mostly didn't feel swingy. Sometimes an attack would be a blowout, but it didn't happen often and it felt ok in a small scale game that moves pretty fast. It certainly feels less swingy than Frostgrave. Particularly since it is fairly common for both players to be rolling multiple dice.

The two stage damage process also seems to help feel less swingy (compared to Frostgrave). Usually an armoured defender has the advantage on the damage roll unless the attacker did really well on the hit roll (because the damage rating of weapons is lower than armour+CON of the defender), so the attack roll has to go really well before the defender has no hope of avoiding getting taken out.

There are probably too many weapon profiles, but since the bulk of them are 'scarce' or 'artifacts' you won't have a lot of them and I think the list of regular weapons is at least small enough, and each weapon has a clear enough intended role, that it isn't as bad as it could be.

Anyways, I mostly just posted so I could contribute dogs.
