Yeah, but there have been some instances of "scam" ransomware that just encrypts your poo poo without bothering to have the whole unique key retrieval infrastructure.

Given their 0.000283% conversion rate I wonder how much the faith thing really matters. I mean how many people would pay up without researching whether it works?

I'm kinda surprised the rate is so low, but I guess that reflects the fact that vulnerable systems were mostly clients without any valuable data on them. In the UK reports say there was no data lost from NHS systems at least.

i'd wager it has more to do with the fact that a) good luck running a non-technical through the bitcoin buying and transmitting process and b) who in their mind would punch their credit card info into an exchange suggested by scammers, no matter how (relatively) trustworthy it is

imagining for a moment that they wouldn't get wrecked, if the requested payment was over paypal, i'm sure the conversion rate would be significantly higher. maybe they should try with amazon giftcards or something

I know a few people in the NHS and they've said that their trusts haven't lost anything at least, many IT systems are outsourced these days which helps insulate the data. This would fit with most trusts getting their systems back up and running within 24 hours. Even losing a day's worth of data would cause more disruption than that.

it could also be that they lucked out and used file formats that weren't in the list of targeted extensions.

Symantec has a good list

1password not having Linux support is killing me right now and I think I'm going to just bite the bullet and switch back to Keepass like I was using 9 years ago.

The one thing I find absolutely infuriating about Keepass, though, is that it doesn't auto-save the vault when you add a new password or change passwords. I lost data on an encrypted sparse volume due to that before. That sucked poo poo and drove me over to 1password. Is that issue taken care of by any of the KeePass forks?

I'm using KeepassX, it has an option to autosave after any change. It's just off by default.

there's a very obtuse way of doing it. create a trigger on user interface state change, condition unsaved changes, action save

it fits the KeePass ethos of unnecessary extra work to set it up followed by working fine
