Starhyke is a really weird show. Between 2004-2008 they made 6 episodes. It never aired on television but Amazon Prime has it. I've never seen anything like it. 98% of the budget was probably spent on Claudia Christian (Captain Blowhard), set quality is about on par with old Doctor Who. Everyone is enthusiastic in their roles except Claudia Christian. In the distant future, humans have suppressed all emotion and went about exterminating every alien species they can find. An enemy ship escapes into the past to destroy Earth and they follow but the enemy attacks with a bio-weapon that allows them to experience emotion for the first time. None of that matters except the emotion part. From there it's basically soft core porn, without the porn. They couldn't have believed any tv network would air this. It's a thing I can't believe anyone spent money to make but they did. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_pNa9nZcqQ

I have vague memories of Starhyke when it was in production, but I literally assumed it never actually got made into anything more than a demo reel. With Claudia Christian, though, something I mentioned in another thread is that there's a show on Youtube called "Space Hospital" that I've never actually been able to sit down and try to watch in all seriousness, but I did see she and Frank Conniff both did guest spots on. It seems like it has extremely low production values, though.

Did anybody else see the Yahoo! original sci-fi comedy Other Space? I thought it was pretty decent but since Yahoo stopped making tv shows pretty quick it never got a second season.

I really wish that Netflix would pick it up. Just having Joel Hodgson and Trace Beaulieu in the cast is enough to get me to watch something though

Other Space and Quick Draw are the 2 'failed' web series no one I know has seen that I totally love. There's a lot new about the the MST3K; but the most jarring thing, thinking on it, is that I get most of the references right away. It's really unusual. It's not a bad thing at all, I think though, that I kind of got a kick out of revisiting MST3K episodes as I got older and understanding more of them, kind of like a well I could go back to. Not a complaint.

I also just watched the new MST3K and thanks to the first episode i now know that this gif is from the movie Reptilicus. Anyway, the new cast seems good so far (although, i have only watched that one episode); i haven't followed RiffTrax or Cinematic Titanic or any of the original creator's other project so i'm not sure how it compares, but as of now i'm going to keep watching it.

Yeah I've watched the first few eps of the new MST3K, definitely just as funny as the original, I think the people crying sacrilege are just looking at the original with rose tinted glasses. Not every episode was Manos, not by a long shot.

The D Train is about a guy who tries to get a former classmate to come to a highschool reunion because he was in a commercial and it would attract more people to attend. It goes... places.

And the new MST3K has Patton Oswald as TV's Frank!! I was a little disappointed that the robot voices obviously aren't the same, but the corniness of the first bit of the first episode was perfect, considering how hard the style of the show must be to reproduce in 2017. I always loved the old ones, but seeing a brand new episode is getting me more hyped than I thought it would. Yay!

I'd recommend this as well. I actually saw it in theaters, which wasn't easy: quote:In its opening weekend, the film grossed $447,524 from 1,009 theaters ($444 per theater), which is the 15th worst opening for a wide release film of all-time.[12] In its second weekend, the film was pulled from 847 screens, and its weekend-to-weekend gross fell 96.5%, as it only earned $15,714 ($97 per theater). I know that's not a ringing endorsement but trust me, it's fine. I think it just wasn't marketed or something.

I watched a bit of Reptilicus and didn't find the commentary funny. They need to hire better writers or a better host. Most comedians don't make me laugh though so maybe I'm broken.

I'm kind of split on the new MST3K. I think some of the jokes are great, but there are just so many jokes all the time that after a while it's just hard to pay attention. I'm halfway through Cry Wilderness and people have said that the riffing slows down, so I think I will stick with it. So far though it seems like they thought every moment in the movies needs a riff, and the good jokes are getting lost in a sea of okay ones. I have liked the skits so far though

Reptilicus is the worst of the bunch. The rest are better but honestly, it's as good as the original runs. Too many jokes too fast. Every once in a while they slow down and it gets really, really good! It doesn't last long, though.

Ep1 was good, but Cry Wilderness had them each talking way too much about the simplest thing, which kinda ruined it. Hopefully ep3 is better.

If you don't know, he's been a TV writer for a very long time and is on the Flophouse podcast. He's very bright but is constantly going at 100 mph and walks over everyone to get his joke out first.

Yeah, MST3K has Elliott Kalan's fingerprints all over it. His mile-a-minute joke personality works on the Flop House when he has two other hosts to balance him out, but when he's writing all three characters to be as manic as he is it gets king of tiresome. I kind of wish that Joel would come back and replace Jonah, because I don't think Joel can speak fast enough to rattle off all of those riffs

Elliot Kalan singlehandedly makes The Flophouse unlistenable, but apparently he's been the lead writer on a few projects I've enjoyed, so I'm torn. I guess his output is so high that it balances out to good when he's got a team to sort the wheat from the chaff? Anyway, if you have HBO Now, go watch Tickled. I can't recommend it highly enough. Even if you go in knowing that tickling videos are a fetish thing, you will never guess how completely off-the-rails everything goes and how fast. A New Zealand pop culture journalist writes an innocuous article about "competitive endurance tickling" and ends up uncovering a horrifying one-man conspiracy of blackmail that is funded by millions of inheritance dollars, has been running unchecked for decades, and has cells being run all across the United States.

Dear White People (netflix) is hysterical. Some of the best-written dialogue I've seen in a while. Episodes are short, and each follows a different character - easy to get hooked.

Bojack Horseman has become my background noise of choice after already going through it a couple times. Aside from it being a really good show, I can't go through it without picking up a stupid animal pun I missed before. This most current duh moment was the nostalgic 50's diner with servers Marlin Brando and Lu-seal Ball.

The lightheartedness of the animal puns is a great counterbalance to the darker material which is spectacularly unfunny. Like haha, a cartoon show oh wait did that just happen. What in the actual gently caress. The theme gets stuck in my head so well too.

Norm to me is funnier when it's situational, like a conversation he's having. His standup is just not that great to me because he doesn't have someone to rebound off of. I say that while believing he's the funniest man alive.
