Bestwick is good. Cheever and Goodyear both have huge egos, legit dislike each other from what I've read, and are thus wretched to listen to.

PT and Tommy Kendall have so much better chemistry it isn't funny. And Bob, Ned, and Benny were the best racing announce team ever.

Also I met Charlie Kimball randomly walking around IMS. I swear to god driver accessibility with the series is insanely easy.

Really bizarre to see the amount of Rossi stuff I saw at the track.

He went from being a guy who I saw generally ignored last may at the track to being celebrated by the entire fanbase. That "500" win must have been that drat memorable.

I just kinda find it amusing how guys like Power, Hinch, TK, and a few others are now cult figures in a similiar vain that guys like Andretti, Foyt, and such were back in the day.

This is good though. The sport creating new "heroes" is a great thing in light of all the people whining about the lack of Jeff Gordons and such in the sport.

Also WIBC aired this awesome "Best 33" special after the race driving home. I want audio of this so drat bad. Literally had Donald Davidson mixed in with old radio highlights. They even played an old song called the "Ballad of Jimmy Bryan" and it was incredible

Race Recap:

Respect the power of the wind
That was the first time I wanted to punch Cheever and Goodyear through my TV. I think even Bestwick was phoning it in, which he might as well at this point. Later, I saw a recap of how bad the coverage was later:

quote:

- Ryan Hunter-Reay finished third, didn't hear about him.
- Graham Rahal starts 20th, finishes 6th, didn't hear enough about him
- Max Chilton has one of his best runs in IndyCar, finishes 7th after starting 14th, heard nothing about it
- Conor Daly was in the top 10, then all of a sudden was a lap down and finishes 17th. How did that happen?
- Two drivers are out of the race. They never show a replay of Bourdais' incident, briefly mention Kimball's deal without replay 10 laps after the fact. Don't interview either driver
- Never show replay of the Pigot-Hinchcliffe incident
- Take 5 laps to show onboard replay of Andretti's punting of Kanaan
- Call Alonso a "road course specialist." Come on Allen, you're better than that
- 10 minutes of prerace coverage. (But they can manage 30 minutes of pregame for Derek Jeter's loving number retirement tomorrow).
- Oh, and my biggest problem with ABC that is never addressed and fixed: TURN UP THE loving NAT SOUND OF THE ENGINES
- Forgot to mention the Dixon & RHR passes on Helio happened during "side-by-side," so since they didn't show a replay, I missed them when I watched the race on ESPN3

With countless other passes mentioned in afterthought or not even talked about at all.

I'm just praying that ABC doesn't ruin the huge opportunity that Indycar has with Alonso this year.

given the way ABC has torched all their sports coverage, it wouldnt surprise me at all if they dont even bid on the next indycar tv deal. so like, thats a positive i guess?

It's frustrating because ABC Sports used to do a good job promoting the hell out of the "500".

I mean it wasn't "perfect", but they used to make it a prime time event. Jim McKay was one of the earliest champions of it, and it seemed to be produced with the utmost respect. ABC treated it like how one would treat the Super Bowl, The Masters, Final Four., Rose Bowl. A big time event that you SHOULD watch because it's an event that belongs in the conversation of those that I just typed.

In theory? They should have a field day with this race. Even without the Alonso lead. This is fascinating as month to see play out. A lot of stories you can tell about the drivers in the field. They really need to find a Bobby Unser type to talk up the engineering side of things, and then a guy like Sam Posey to talk up the drivers home life.

The "500" really is a bizarre outlier at this point.

Same with their coverage of College Football. I'm convinced that we'll see Big Ten 'ball bail on them in the near future and we'll see Fox Sports take over the rights from there.

Beat me to it, drat. But yeah here's the Indy one from '78.

ABC/ESPN even referenced it in the tease they did for the 2014 race.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqm4DVJgGnY

I'm just going to (sadly) admit that ABC Sports is dead, and has been dead since 04/05ish when guys like Paul Page, Keith Jackson and Al Michaels stopped calling events for them.

Oh wow, I totally forgot about this intro. What an intro.

ABC Sports died when ESPN took over operations. As ESPN started going downhill, so did their priorities in sports coverage.

Yeah it's kinda fascinating to see them chip away at what they had from 05 on.

05
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5j4CGd3oado

They're hanging on by a thread. They got Musburger anchoring pre-race. They got the old graphics, even the Jim McKay intro. ("Spanning the globe...", "You're watching ABC's wide world of sports") But Paul Page is gone, and in is Todd Harris. Last year of MNF was this year.

06
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YClzqHqbNMo

ESPN wants NASCAR back. They're getting NASCAR back within the year. Marty Reid is calling races along with Rusty Wallace for that reason. ABC Sports graphics still exist at this point. Indy is an after thought. NASCAR is at it's commercial peak, and IndyCar is still dealing with the split. They probably feel they can't sell it any more. Last year of ABC Sports having the rights to the BCS Bowl games was this year. (sans the Rose Bowl, which would end up being bumped over to ESPN)

07
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYfGqhQa6kw

ESPN gets NASCAR back. ESPN kills off the ABC Sports graphics. Within the year IndyCar will come up for contract negotiations. ESPN having no use for IndyCar outside of Indy offers them ESPN2 and ABC. Tony George winds up taking the Versus deal because "money" over a deal that would have came about with DirectTV (which would have had some sort of special IndyCar channel or something). ESPN would wind up "lowballing" the Big Ten around that time as well. The response from the Big Ten was a "shove it up your rear end" and creating their own channel.

But ESPN is happy. NASCAR is a much more valuable property at this point, and I mean it's not like their bubble will burst within the year or so, right?
