BCR posted:Hi all, If they are an international student at a ~reputable university~ with a school of psychology, then they will probably have access to a psychology clinic at an extremely reduced/no cost AND they get access to basically gold-standard psychological services. Additionally, Lifeline is always a great resource and it's constantly staffed, quality may vary. Gotta also remember that feeling poo poo after a death is extremely expected/normal so connecting someone with support services is good, its also probably just a good idea to ensure that you are there for them and chatting regularly, and hopefully their own support network will kick in soon. Good luck (hope they are okay)

So FTTN is finally available in my area and holy poo poo did the liberals gently caress it sideways. Just finding a good modem that works with my ISP's implementation seems to be a crapshoot. The one I ended up with (a netgear) is probably the worst appliance I've laid hands on since my days supporting ADSL1, and apparently the TP-Link I wanted doesn't work half the time because reasons and why the gently caress don't we have fibre you gigantic thunderfucks. This is gonna be a shouty few weeks. I may have to punch on with a Lib voter.

I'm one of said psychologists at a university counselling service (hopefully a good one). Not in NSW though. Uni counselling services are pretty competitive jobs with good conditions, so in theory should be selecting for good psychologists. Doesn't always work. Still, international students with unexpected events back home is probably in the top 5 presenting issues, so I hope they'll get useful support. At our uni it's already a busy time of year, but we do try to offer some on the day appointments. Not all unis do though. State governments usually fund some extra support services for international students (because they're a decent boost to the economy). Looks like NSW's would be these: https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/support-international-students, although unlike VIC or QLD they don't mention anything direct about emotional/psychological support. Griefline also offer phone and online counselling/support, which might be helpful. Edit: wrong state! UrbanLabyrinth fucked around with this message at 23:25 on May 15, 2017 |

Doesn't your ISP just give you a compatible modem? I asked around to buy one when I got my FTTB and the computer guy said I shouldn't bother trying to buy one third party because it's impossible.

But that's beside the point, the point being that by now, I should be able to plug my wireless router into the wall and have flawless gigabit-capable internet, not gently caress around with broken cludge solutions designed to funnel as much money back to Telstra shareholders as possible.

My worry is that they save money by massively overselling their bandwidth. Like Optus and Telstra do except actually passing the savings on to the customer.

All I can tell you is that I use the internet like anyone else at home and it is both fast and good. That is my review. Added bonus is not paying TPG, Optus or Telstra for internet until these guys do something to aggravate me, which is inevitable.

Fun fact: if you didn't pay for an Oz subscription you could afford to eat smashed avo once a week. Add to that a subscription cost to the SMH and you've got a coffee with your smashed avo. This is just digital stuff too - if you were buying dead tree stuff then you'd save a bunch more.
