Fidel Castronaut posted:i mean, in large part, a degree is a class badge that tells people, regardless of major, that "i am a person who is in the middle class" so you can enter into middle class spaces freely and middle class people will be comfortable with you because you can say "oh, i did my undergrad at ____" at some boring dinner party. and, in fact, humanities degrees trend from wealthier families because they know they are going to have a job no matter what so they don't have to find a major that maps to a specific vocation. there's also the flip side that rurals will never ever trust you if they learn you have an education like the left-wing outreach specifically says "don't mention your degrees at any point"

Mirthless posted:sounds like a pretty loving dumb reason to incur five digits of personal debt to me Average student loan debt for graduates is $30,000. I've run that through an amortization calculator and if you're paying current interest rates and pay for twenty years, you end up paying like $50k. You earn far more than $50k in comparison to the ~$30k/year median for a person without a degree. Median for an English major is like $45k or around that.

Mirthless posted:lol explains why he's so cagey about being told college degrees are largely pointless in this day and age I'm cagey about it because I taught first year college students in Detroit and they were told that if it wasn't engineering or nursing or some vocational degree, then it's useless. So, when they struggled with science or math, they thought college was pointless for them. The only way they are getting out of Detroit is with a college degree and a humanities degree would get them a job. That's why I'm cagey, prick.

Solarin posted:I've always wondered how useful knowledge of logic in the philosophy domain translates to math and CS? Not a ton directly. I took a CS Discrete Mathematics course and a philosophy Symbolic Logic course that were both basically just "if p then q" stuff, but that was about it for explicit overlap. Some of the epistemological stuff about the nature of knowledge can help you conceptually, especially if you do shade into theory or want to do human interaction studies - understanding the debate around Knowledge vs. True, Justified Belief helps. A lot of it is just good horizon-expanding stuff that keeps you from thinking of the world exclusively in terms of software engineering in ways that are hard to directly correlate to resume-building skills, you need to learn how to argue with someone without being an rear end in a top hat and write something persuasive another human being might actually want to read. People are right when they say if you want a programming job then a University degree isn't the most direct route, but if you are going to University you should get something out of it you wouldn't have gotten from a short professional program.
