Fact check: That duck is plucked but seems to still have skin. Also it was after the anthem, not during a stoppage.

I'm still really impressed with the way the Nashville organization brought hockey to Tennessee of all places. The Hockey 101 thing, the explanatory headsets, getting country stars on board... the whole thing was a clinic on how to build a brand.

IMO they muddled through a little bit when Craig Leipold was the owner but him and Balsille trying to move the team got them a lot of local support (ironically) and then the new owners brought in business-side execs that had worked in Dallas and Tampa and they worked harder on promoting hockey aside from just selling tickets. Plus the Titans and UT Football have been pretty bad through the last period where the Preds were relatively successfully, which probably helped.

I don't expect him to be that much better than anyone else, but I also don't expect him to be worse than say, Hainsey or Maatta, and I don't see much of a downside in either skating 7D so we can spread out the ice time a bit more, or just giving those guys a day off here and there. I get that you don't want to take guys out of their rhythm or have them get cold from sitting out too long, but that kind of presupposes that they're in some sort of rhythm or showing signs of warmth to begin with, which I don't think you can say of the Pens D right now. I just wish they had done this earlier in the postseason so they didn't have to bring Streit into an ECF game after sitting out the past month or however long it's been. Even when Schultz and Daley were healthy, I think it would have been smart to have tried rotating Streit and Ruhwedel in just to see how they fared. Ruhwedel has looked great since he's been in. I don't think he can maintain this level of play for the long haul, but no harm in riding the hot streak and then if he shits the bed swap him out with someone who's maybe sat for a game or two and is itching to prove they deserve to be in the lineup to get a repeat.

Fair enough. I think the argument for 7D has some merit. Pens have been weakest down low in their own zone for much of the playoffs. That said, it's more because our defense resorts to chipping the puck around the boards nearly every time rather than trying to carry it at all. That aside, I would start Kris Letang in a neck brace over Olli Matta at this point. I don't know what the Pens staff see in his performance that I'm missing (probably a lot).

I don't know what the Pens staff see in his performance that I'm missing (probably a lot). Agreed, and I don't think you're missing something. I mentioned this earlier, but I think the Pens D is basically a circle of crap, which is why the TOI is relatively evenly split with no major sheltering. It's like, oh it just took Maatta 40 seconds to skate from the offensive zone back through the neutral zone and into the defensive zone, leading to a goal against? That's not good, get him off the ice -- Hainsey, you're up next. Oh poo poo, he just turned the puck over in our end leading to a goal against because he decided to hold onto it and battle through a 1:1 forecheck instead of making an uncontested breakout pass. Get him off the ice and get Cole out there! And so on, until Maatta is back on the ice again. We've kind of beaten the "why does Maatta suck so bad" horse to death over the past few weeks, and it's one of those situations where he looks bad via the eye test, and AFAIK the stats and analytics aren't really in his favor (esp. without Letang next to him) either. Unfortunately, JR gave him a 6-year extension last year (fortunately not too bad on the AAV, just $4M), and after his first couple years there was a lot of hope that he could be a solid #2 or #3 D-man (esp. with Letang next to him), so I'd guess there's a lot of organizational momentum towards trying to get him to deliver on the promise he showed early on. At the end of the day, there are far worse D-men getting paid far more than $4M per year who are far older than 22, so it's not the end of the world. Hopefully he can stay healthy and get back on a better trajectory. And hopefully this summer he does a lot of sprints and gets a skating coach or something, jfc

A goofy, totally unrealistic idea to help the NHL promote stars that occurred to me at lunch: If you beat a team in the playoffs, you get to pick one player from their roster to play on your team the rest of the season. Obviously there are a thousand reasons this would never fly, but it's fun to think about increasingly stacked teams facing off.

Except most of those stars are probably held together with duct tape and super glue by the time they finish a playoff run and are relieved to have a chance to rest.
