I've known several who got out and then failed horribly or tried and failed to get back in. It's always depressing.

Hello army thread I have a dumb question One of my coworkers is talking to a med tech on active duty in Syria through a dating site, she seems concerned that this person may be stealing valor and is unsure how to go about verifying that she really is a currently serving army person I tried explaining that she's probably hesitant to talk much about what she's up to because of her deployment situation and probably sketchy about trying to prove anything to a random stranger on the internet, but she said she's been burned before by people who said they were in when they weren't. All I have seen is a photo of her in uniform which seems current and correct but as my main military experience is with the Australian army I'm not sure what else she could ask from her that she might be comfortable sharing. Any suggestions on what I should tell her? I'm tempted to just say not to read too much into it but if I can save some heartbreak all the better Anyway sorry if this is not appropriate for the thread just thought I'd ask, thanks in advance

i'm kinda drunk but its one of those "if you have to ask..." kind of things but i'd be kind of surprised if someone claiming to be in the army would be acknowledging being in Syria atm because thats not like a real troop rotation, we haven't properly invaded syria thankfully yet. I'd think the people who are there right now wouldn't say that they are there right now due to OPSEC, but I could very well be wrong

Ok thank you, apparently she was able to verify she is in Syria somehow but hasn't been able to find out anything concrete besides a few photos. She did tell me she wants to fly over to visit so I'll advise her what to look out for! Edit if it matters: they're both she's, she (army person) says they want to fly out, I (veteran) think it's a bit weird this army person can't properly id herself and think coworker should seek psychiatric help, but thought I'd ask in case I could get some good feedback which I have been getting, thanks doods Drummond Bass fucked around with this message at 12:27 on May 17, 2017 |

Seriously any time someone claims to be military assume it's either unimportant or bullshit, because nearly the entirety of military service is unimportant bullshit. Also tell your friend to nut up and get a real relationship because long distance is for people who are insecure babies that can't face the more complicated aspects of a relationship (this isn't counting people in existing relationships, or meeting someone online, but your first contact shouldn't be "oh actually I'm somewhere I can't talk or see you). That is textbook catfishing 101. God that's so loving dumb if you're not trolling LMAO. In short: Don't date military dudes Don't long distance date Don't go to loving warzones Wasabi the J fucked around with this message at 11:49 on May 17, 2017 |

I really hope that is a joke because it sounds like she is auditioning to star in a beheading video. Even if she somehow got into the country legally right now, there is absolutely zero chance of her meeting this person.

I did think it was kind of weird she would even bring it up with me, I am somewhat sympathetic about not being able to talk about certain aspects of the job but I definitely smell a rat here. I do appreciate all the input, thank you!

Your friend needs to be told in the least delicate way that they are making a bad decision for no immediate gain and a lot of potential loss to likely include death or fraud. If it really is a deployment they'll be back in a year or dead, so they can wait.

If person is military: wtf why wouldn't they say "Noooooooo!" regarding her coming over. If not, she's about to be an IS death/rape toy. This is the kind of thing she should be asking the FBI about, not some goon (no offense).

At what point does "on a dating site while deployed in Syria" makes sense... I really can't make it any farther than that. Also.. How loving hard up do you have to be to make flying to Syria to get laid a viable option. I'm all for foreign diplomacy, but going to an active war zone with a history of Sarin air freshener is a hard no.

At best I'm hoping she is being catfished, I've advised her to be extremely cautious about any further interaction with this person and hopefully she won't end up starring in a beheading video. Next time I see her I will make sure she isn't doing anything stupid, thanks again y'all Edit: to be clear she isn't flying to a warzone it's supposedly the other way around

Still a BAD IDEA, but at least its not flying to Syria bad.

Tell your friend to find someone else, not someone possibly shady and/or trying to rob/scam/kill you and wear your face around your house. Preferably find someone local. Also even if this army person is not any of the above, they're still in the army and a loving idiot, like all of us fine posting forums members here.

Tell her to get as much workable information as possible and then go full analyst on Facebook/social media to find out who they really are. Soldiers are stupid and love telling the world they're soldiers on social media.

She did tell me she wants to fly over to visit so I'll advise her what to look out for! Catfish. She should have no problem IDing herself or showing a CAC card/service card indicated service. Do this, or ask for something legit. A uniform is not legit. I can buy those all the time. The magic words are DD-214 or ERB/ORB for Army folk. If they don't have one or it's "lost" it's bullshit. Edit: and you can black out your social. Literally no goddamn reason to omit anything if it was serious. Your friend needs confidence. Stay away from online because it's only going to make things worse. I met a chick in Iraq that I thought was a catfish once. We were awesome together but we video chatted and she showed me the loving chu she was in. She was like three bases down from me. It happens but it's rare. Could a medic be in Syria right now? Absolutely! Is it probable? No, not really. Maybe for civilian and other purposes by anything detailing a BCT would get lots of news and everybody would know who they are because they would be boasting about it for loving ever.
