Also their ships use tiny black holes for almost everything - their shields are tiny black holes that make lasers bend at weird angles or just get eaten entirely, and instead of using engines they keep making tiny black holes that they then 'fall' into for a brief instant to accelerate. There's cool ideas in that setup, if nothing else.

I think Rebellion is a good anime movie and a good madoka movie with a lot of interesting moments, I feel like they managed to very subtly one up their previous characterization of 'Kyubei'. He's not just a messenger, we got to see a glimpse behind the mask at a horrifyingly apathetic and powerful alien civilization that reminded me a lot of the Daleks/Time Lords. Taking your world to complete our objectives, oh there's people? They're irrelevant. You have information we want? Trap you in a hell prison for eons until you spill the beans, we can wait. It works because it's still kind of subtle and necessary to make Akuma's vengeance on them an element of catharsis by the films conclusion. The original series gave me the impression that in the end, you just have to ignore them. They aren't worth your time. They're like a manipulative and abuse ex and as long as they were non-violent they would give up and you could walk away. The movie escalates it, no, there is no 'just' walking away from them and they will wrong you.

I read a lot of Star Wars EU books back in the day, but fell off before the Yuzan Vong. The only ones I remember particularly fondly are the Thrawn trilogy.
