Born in NZ, but I think he's a naturalised Australian citizen. New Zealand has a population of about the same as Australia's second biggest city, so there's a real limit to how far you can go in MMA there. Of course, there's a limit here as well but it's a fair bit higher.

True about the way he'd be seen/marketed in the US.

And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

McGregor would have lost to the chad that rocked up for Aldo the second time. And probably the first time.

Weird hypothetical: if downward elbows, and strikes to the back of the spine and head were legal - would leg takedowns no longer be viable?

They would be very viable, except against the cage where you would need to complete them quickly. It would also make back mount an almost guaranteed finish

So I'm going to be in China from Aug - Nov.

I found out UFC will be back in Saitama Super Arena end of September.

I'm thinking about maybe doing some Japan tourism and maybe doing the UFC show???

I'm trying to figure out if that part would be a waste of time (as in, would there be anything special about SSA? Am I just clutching to memories of PRIDE? Would my time be better spent ya know... doing Japanese things? ) ?

The downward elbow to the back of the head is already kind of sort of unofficially allowed if one guy is pinned to the cage. It wouldn't make a big difference except more people would die or be permanently damaged

You can see in the old no rules/vale tudo fights that downward elbows dont do much against a guy taking you down, theyre really nasty when you are in mount or back control though. So just like knees to the head of a downed opponent it turns out to be more of a help to grapplers than an anti-grappler weapon like people want it to be

Rogan and Jocko were having a pretty interesting discussion about how it's basically stupid that you have to wear gloves but can kick and elbow someone in the face.

Is it interesting because gloves protect hands from breaking and have nothing to do with saving the opponent from damage?

Is tonight the greatest moment in Dominick Cruz's life?

No.

The greatest moment in my life was realizing that I didn't need a belt to be happy.
if they taped up knees real well and put little knee gloves on them chances are carlos condit would have beaten tyron woodley. I'm just saying

Stealth Tiger

I'm pretty sure if guys couldn't wear gloves/ tape their hands, they would just punch anyways and have to accept the fact that their hands would get wrecked for the sake of landing strikes.

If you've been to a UFC event before they're pretty much the same whichever country they're in. If you want to relive memories of PRIDE there's going to be a Rizin show in October with the second round of a GP with Kyoji Horiguchi, and whatever other dumb poo poo they put on it.

It's impossible to second guess UFC business practices these days but I can't imagine any Japanese card these days being good, they kind of peaked at Silva vs Stann and then kept getting Roy Nelson fights.

Case in point: Urijah Faber going two more rounds with Mike Brown after breaking his hands.. Generally speaking, fighters are too tough for their own good.

Didn't old bare knuckle fights feature a lot more body shots and a lot fewer punches to the head?

People might be less inclined to punch, more inclined to grapple and take less repeated blows to the head.

possibly in some cases. especially if the fighters had regular labour jobs they used their hands for ... but if a fighter can win a bunch of money by knocking someone out with 1 punch then a fighter who can knock people out will headhunt. a broken knuckle generally wont cause you too many problems in the long run
